Does anyone Just laugh when they see this stuff.

I looked in a 2 months ago stereophile magazine $3,000 for a battery operated pre-amp. If i was going to pay that much for something it better have a wall fpug and eat up electricity.

Peopple Complain about having bought white van speakers But they didnt even try to haggle the price down to $50.00 I mean come on thats the only time your going to get a pair of floorstanders for that cheap so put your greed to work! And if it dont sound that good you can always modify the speakers until they sound good.

People complaining about bose car systems for sounding too boomy. isnt that what people want in a car system? I was in a BMW once with puunding techno music and I loved it There was lots of boom boom!

The hatred of BOSE to the point it becomes childish. Its all about the acoustimass systems. Everybody knows a HTIB will NEVER sound like a Dedicated setup with real multi driver speakers. I wish i had a pair of 301's

People hating yorx and soundesign stereos but boast about how good thier ipod docks are i have to say if you use different speakers than what came wit them they sound better. a nice apir of cerwin vegas would be over kill on 45 watts. I saw someone driving a pair of those cerwin vegas with a little T amp and they were really loud.

I was gonna rant evwen longer but I'd run out of things to say.

i'll just answer this part of the rant. you'll see quite a niche for high-end battery powered kit, because it's not unusual for a house's electrical supply to be 1) noisy and 2) uneven. battery power solves both these problems.

as for $3000 price tag... it's pricey but it's nowhere near the realm of ridiculousness. if i made about 50% higher salary, i'd probably consider a pre-amp in that price range.

The bose system in my car sounds like TRASH. I *wish* I had more bass. It sounds like a tin can. The "dedicated" bose sub is a joke.

No one will argue with you on this, the point however is that Bose continues to act like they do sound good and they charge a fortune for generally crap in most of their lines.

I don't think many audio folks would care about attacking Bose if it weren't for Bose's attack on the audio community. And by that, I mean the ads where they talk about how their science has made big ugly speakers a waste of space etc.

It's amusing to think that Bose ads will probably be running long after I'm dead and gone. You have to give them credit though. I remember some people at a company I worked for trying to duplicate what Bose did in making a cheap satellite mini speaker system. It was ugly

Actually Ron Sutherland (part of the original duo that formed Martin Logan Speakers) designed his phono-pre for the very reason of NOT using the generally poor quality of supplied electricity. As the other poster said there is alot of noise , etc coming through those lines.

I have had the pleasure of listening through his phono stages in the listening rooms @ Acoustic Sounds in Salina, Ks and can tell you first hand it is indeed a very, very nice setup.

I didnt know that. but does it have An AC adaptor jack. after seeing hom many batteries it used I wonder how many Save-alot batteries i'll have to stock up on. If I could sneak the preamp into the house

Well, you can always buy the batteries in bulk or just get a wal-wart of the right type, cut off the plug, and solder in the wires. Make sure though if you're using batteries to break them in first. A good way is having your wife or girlfriend use them in her vibrator for a session or two.

Hell I don't think even Duracells would last past a single session with my old lady. That and to truly break them in you need at least 48 hours on them.

So the battery operated pre amp just use "energizers" or there are some "audiophool" grade batteries now out there?

Many reviews describe a pair of speakers as sounding "better than speakers costing twice as much". This comparison generally holds true if the particular "speakers costing twice as much" happen to be Bose.

That phrase actually bugs me quite a bit.

I subscribe to Home Theater Magazine and almost every other review says "I'd buy these at twice the price" or "sound as good as systems I've heard costing twice as much" etc etc etc...

After a while the phrase just falls on deaf ears. Every speaker ad has some award for bang for the buck, best in class, most value, etc...

Actually most speaker reviews I read outside of this forum are fluff anyway. I just like reading about and seeing new HT gear.

At least it is somewhat tangible.

What about when you see a description that says a speaker, component, or setup "sounds twice as nice". What does THAT mean?
