Baseball on FOX and ESPN

Is it just me, or does baseball on those two networks look softer than others? ESPECIALLY FOX. I'm not an HD expert, but I can bet they're broadcast is NOT 1080 because of how "soft" the picture looks. I've had HD for about...2 years, so certain things stick out to you about a 1080 picture, like the detail in the skin and the glistening of sweat, stuff like that. Razor sharpness. Hard to explain, but I can tell immediately if its a 1080 broadcast. Thats why baseball on FOX looks so terrible ! There's a softness to the picture, especially from that center field camera, which looks terrible. ESPN is a little better than FOX, but you can tell that it isn't 1080 either. When they do a close-up on the announcers Joe Morgan and the other guy, it looks good. But as soon as they go to the action on the FIELD, that softness that you dont get from 1080 is there. Comcast Sportsnet does the Phillies home games in 1080, and you can tell because there's no softness anywhere! No biggie, just something I noticed after watching home games on Comcast, and then going to FOX and ESPN.

ESPN broadcasts in 720p and I thought I heard somewhere that Fox does 480p widescreen on baseball.

Fox generally does one HD game a week, which is 720p. The rest are 480i widescreen. Once in a while they will do no HD games, and I believe they may have done 2 HD games a couple time, but I am not sure about that

480i ?! Well, I have to believe that, just on how cloudy and soft FOX games look. I knew there was NO way they were 1080, but I had no idea it was as low as 480 !

I hope you know that Fox HD is 720p. It always has. They never used 1080i.

It, of course ISN'T 480p. Never has been. Before FOX was HD, their widescreen programming was distributed to the stations 480i anamorphic and the stations converted it to 480p 16:9. Now FOX is distributing widescreen non HD programming as 480i upconverted to 720p and then sent to the stations.

For some reason, this guy acts like he knows what he's talking about.
