Budget Receiver for huge room

Hi, I haven't been around the forum in a while and am a little out of the know on what people's opinions on various receivers has been recently. Anyhow, I'm in charge of selecting equipment to make a theatre in my college's Knights of Columbus hall. I am looking for a receiver under $500. Either the Pioneer 1017 or the Onkyo 605 seemed like they might work. The analog to HDMI converting of the 605 would be nice but is not completely necessary. The room we have is quite large (30'x15'x12') so we need a good bit of power though so this might sway the decision although we can't afford separates. We will most likely be purchasing Ascend Acoustics speakers as a side note. All recommendations are greatly appreciated.

I don't think the Onkyo 605 would be powerful enough for your room. I just purchased a 705 for my much smaller room and feel that it is just adequate.

If you don't need HDMI switching, I would recommend looking for an older model w/o all of the features, but with a stronger amplifier section.

340s for the mains and center, and 170s everywhere else with a Hsu V3 Turbo (with the room size I'm assuming that's fairly necessary) If you have suggestions for speakers that might better fill the room for the same cost or less as well feel free to mention a name or two and I'll do some searching in the proper forum If you think the 605 might not be powerful enough, would the 1017 fit, I know Pioneer likes to overqoute their ratings a lot but they also increased it a ton since the 1016. Thanks!

Normally it's the low frequencies which take the bulk of the power output from your amplifier. You're using a powered sub so it's not likely that you need a very powerful receiver or amplifier, unless you set your left/right speakers to "full".

I've got a very big room...21 x 21 with two story vaulted ceiling...completely open floor plan and my new digital JVC RXD401S 7.1 receiver I got at CC is doing a great job filling the room with sound.

It's on sale for $474 and if you belong to AAA you get an extra 10% off regular and sale prices there.

That's what I was thinking (hence the sub choice) but I haven't worked with a room that large before so I wasn't sure how much I needed.
