Problems playing games in HD

Recently, we bought a Philips 51PW9303 51" Widescreen Projection HDTV-Ready TV. It says it supports 1080i, 480p, and 480i. I'm trying to connect a Playstation 3 to it using React Component Cables. I plug them into the HD slots in the back and the sound works but the image is all scrambled. Is this a problem with my TV? We do not have an HD tuner if that makes any difference. Any help would be much appreciated.

There may be settings on your TV and/or PS3 that must be changed to enable 1080i. Your PS3 also may be set to 720p, and if the TV can't handle it then there's a problem. HDTV tuner is a non-issue. Also ensure the colors are matched up correctly. You can get some strange effects by swapping a connector with component cables.

To be honest, I have no clue. I'd have to play with it to figure it out, but settings on both devices are the first things I'd check.

Try shutting down your PS3. Once its completely off, hold the power button (on the console not the controller) until you heard the second beep. This should reset the video/audio output on the PS3. It will detect what video connection you have and send you to the display setup screen, then you can chose component and make sure you only check the 480i/480p/and 1080i boxes when you go through the set up. Not having a tuner is not related to the problem. Hopefully this helps.

The PS3 options start at standard resolution and asks you to check off boxes for which resolutions your TV can handle. When I check anything over standard and try to use it, the picture goes fuzzy.

Are you guys saying that there are settings on the TV where I have to set to use the HD?

Goes fuzzy as in bad picture quality? Or fuzzy as in it's scambled and not watchable at all?

Do you have any other HD source to try on it?

Can you return the TV? You really need a TV that does 720p for gaming..

My 2 cents

The PS3 still not scaling games? I'm not a gamer so I really don't know.

This was a reported issue for quite a while from those who's displays would not take 720p.

Scrambled as in unwatchable. The actual picture doesn't show up. It's like watching scrambled cable channels. It will show in standard but when I switch to 480i or 1080i, the picture doesn't show up

The price on the TV was unbeatable. I mainly use it for watching TV and I plan on getting a real HDTV next year.

1080i should work fine. No other 1080i source to test with it aye?

I know this is a little out dated, but I have the same TV. You have to have the HD Receiver in order to get the 1080i. The TV we have is the Phillips HDTV Monitor. Model #51PW9303. I have my PS3 hooked up to it and will only get 420 until I get the HD receiver.

Now on a side not where the DVI hookup is, it shows that it is on AV5. When I go into my menu and look for my AV channels, it doesn't even have or show an AV5 channel. WTF

Here is the specs for the TV

Just a complete shot in the dark, maybe a firmware update for your PS3 is in order?
Or maybe that component input only accepts 480p. My old Samsung had 3 component inputs, two of which accepted 720p the other accepted only 480i.

The AV Cable that comes standard with the PS3 only supports standard. If you have the composite or the HDMI, it will support up to 1080.

Remember though, for this TV you have to have the HD Receiver in order to get up to 1080i.

What HD receiver are you talking about? Please post a link to this receiver.

The TV accepts 480i 480p & 1080i signals.

Input 1 component(YPbPr) ONLY accepts 480i signals

Repeat INPUT 1 COMPONENT ONLY ACCEPTS 480i SIGNALS

see page 7 of the manual, the line with the big number 2 next to it http://www.p4c.philips.com/na4/5/51p...03_dfu_aen.pdf

To connect a 480p or 1080i signal it needs to be connected to HD INPUT-AV4 or HD INPUT-AV5

see page 8 of the manual, also note the helpful hints box

http://www.p4c.philips.com/na4/5/51p...03_dfu_aen.pdf

HD INPUT-AV 4 is set to YPbPR otherwise known as component

HD INPUT-AV 5 is set to RGB

if you are trying to use input 5 with your PS3 you will need to change RGB to YPbPr in the menu, see page 59 of the manual to do this

http://www.p4c.philips.com/na4/5/51p...03_dfu_aen.pdf

So to sum up, you can NOT connect your PS3 to INPUT AV-1 component jacks, they only accept 480i signals

INPUT AV-4 accepts 480p & 1080i signals & originally came set to accept YPbPr signals, which is what a PS3 outputs

INPUT AV-5 accepts 480p & 1080i signals, BUT came set to accept RGB signals, so if you are trying to use a PS3 or any orther source that outputs a HD signal in YPbPr you will need to change it in the menu as outlined in page 59 of the manual.

I hope this helps some of you

You can't play PS3 on this TV. I found out the hard way.

Why? No 720p.

Well after some time, I met a someone that has the exact same TV as me.

He has his PS3 hooked up to the AV5 and is playing it with 1080i without and receivers.

Now here is my issue. I have the AV5 hook up in the back, but I do not have the AV5 channel on my TV. All I see are AV1, CV1 (not it), AV2, AV3, and AV4.

Does anyone know how to add it back, I know it used to be there, but it has disappeared. Very wierd
