To be clear, when watching an older disc it isn't necessary to use the coaxial digital output - the 5.1 will pass the signal? Seems to me if both connections are used it would then be necessary to go into the menu to choose which feed to take - yes?

You are correct. My SR8001 is connected to Denon 2910 via HDMI cable only. I can see on front display that 5.1 or even 6.1 (movie "Chicken Run") audio channels active. My software version is h44.
By the way, did anyone see the remote for BD8002?

I would use the coaxial connection instead of 5.1 analog for two reasons:
1st you need to connect only one cable-not 6 cables
2nd audio signal going in via 5.1 analog does not get processed by the receiver's Audyssey or eq. It just goes straight thru.

I hope it is much better than the DV9600 that I just sold.I bought a Sammy BD-P1200 and it blows away my old Marantz.Built like a tank though.

So the consensus for best audio connection is use 1 cable for the older disc audio and 6 for 5.1 Dolby TrueHD and DTS-MA via analog?

It was posted on the Marantz site but is missing along with some other products - problems with their website.

Marantz altered their site last week, and put up sides for both the AV8003 and MM8003. At the same time, the altereed the menu that formally was called "DVD" to "Blu-ray/DVD", so it won't be long before it's up on the site.

I've already decided to commit to Richard (AVS) for an AV8003. In my set up it will be 98% HT use. I like the Marantz name, the 8003's simple face-plate (won't intimidate my wife and/or kids), and I especially like the feature set of the AV8003. I am really looking forward to doing it all via HDMI. I'll use it for Multi-channel music too, but I very rarely ever listen to multi-channel over two channel. For two channel I have a separate set-up.

I am still undecided on a BR player. I need to take one step at a time. Getting the AV8003 should make the BR player decision much easier.

For 2 channel i use Niles speaker switchboxes and switch the speakers to my 2 channel gear - for movies and concerts, the surround processor. Even have a switchbox to send the sub to both systems. If there is a surround processor that is excellent for doing 2 channel, i'd like to know - maybe i just prefer my gear from 1968. Meanwhile, we wait for the BD8002.

This is supposed to come out in June.

I've heard rumors in May but we'll see.

As the BD8002 is not released I would be of concern if the product release might be delayed or even cancelled by the acquiring company.

Yeah, that's a big player...but I wouldn't mind, as it would just mean it would look like it means business in my rack...

I'm really curious as to how this machine will perform DVD upscaling, as that's the deciding factor for me with my next purchase to replace my Panasonic 10A...I assume this thing sends ALL codecs bitstreamed, no?

yes, but at the same price as the denon 3800, which has the realta and kicks all kinds of tail on SD DVD's, why wait?

Well, ideally, I would need for BOTH prices to drop dramatically to even consider it being in my budget range; but is there any way to confirm that the Denon does indeed kick mucho azz when it comes to DVD upscaling?

The player uses the "Realta" chip to upscale/deinterlace SD DVD same as the Denon. Probably the best chip available today.

I talked to the owner of an upscale high-end audio/video store and he told me the Marantz will not be just a rebadged Denon.It will offer even better sound and more quality parts.This is the only player I would trade in my Samsung BD5000 for.
