Sharp LC52D64U vs Philips 52PFL7422D/37

I went to Best Buy & Sams today to play with the Philips 52 inch LCD. I could not get the blacks as much as the Sharp next to it displayed. The colors are good. I wish there was backlight control in the philips models.

I bought the Philips 52" set thru the employee purchase program Philips offered a couple of days ago.

Today I bought a 52" Sharp LC52D64U from Sharp Friends & Family purchase program.

So its time to decide which one to keep.

I certainly liked the black levels in Sharp but am weary about the banding issues. Philips does not have any such issues (banding, clouding, blah) but the black levels were not at par with LG/Sharp/Sony.

Sharp:

has RS232c port
better black levels
slimmer, thinner, lighter
less power consumption
Has been a leader in LCDs in the past
Banding issues seen in a lot of sets

Philips:

Has USB port to update firmware - neat feature
lacks good black levels
no backlight option that you can control
not as popular as Sony/Sharp/Samsung
costs $100 lesser than Sharp
Clunky menu and cheap quality remote

Hmmm,, what a tough decision. What would you guys suggest ?

I would keep the sharp there seems to be no banding issues with the new models or you could send it to me or if you have an extra code laying around you could pm me that
anyways hands down I would keep the sharp although like you said usb is really cool but can it only be used for firmware updates?

So cyberdentist,
A lot of us are putting these two babies to fight it out. Please tell s after you had a chance to experience both sets. Which one are you keeping and what are your main reasons.
BTW As far as I know the 64U also comes with a USB for firmware upgrades.

Please touch upon HD image quality, SD image quality, ( Black levels we know who may be the winner even though they have the same dynamic contrast ratio/ native 10.000/ 2000 native). Shadow detail, saturation and fleshtones.)

Thanks for your help in helping some of us finally decide.
PS. I also ordered a 5264U through FF.

Thanks

I am keeping the Sharp but am giving the Philips to a friend of mine. I am going to his house to set it up for him. The Philips TV is being delivered tomorrow, so probably by this weekend, I can get some pictures. He has Xbox 360 and Digital cable by Cox.

Seemingly Sharp TV's are not being shipped for another 2-3 weeks.

Will keep you updated.

...

Giving $1800 TV to a friend ? You're very generous with your friend.

What is the verdict? Does the Philips XXPFL7422D/37 model beat out the 64U Sharp model or vice versa?

I read in the 52PFL7422D/37 owners' thread that the Philips uses a Sharp panel in the 52 inch. You may be comparing apples to apples on the banding issue.

I just got the 52pfl7422d/37 and i have to agree with the OP, I couldn't tell in the store but when i set it up you can really notice the black is not really black. It becomes much worst when you go of axis (left right). I have a 37'' sharp and its much much better.

Their 10000:1 is exaggerated. (i dont believe it has real 1000:1 even)

It's most likely going back. At the POS i couldn't shall out another 300 for the sony :-p

Has anybody tried to put the sleep timer on ?

The thing doesn't shut the TV off ... that's just weird.
