Should I reinstall my phone line for satelite?

I am in the process of switching to dtv from cable. We no longer have a land phone line, and I was wondering if I should get it reinstalled for the satellite. I understand without it I will not be able to order ppv via the boxes. Are there any other advantages to having the boxes connected to a phone line? If not, I don't want to pay for it just for ppv, when I can order them on line.

Thanks.

Sorry, that would probably help...

I am getting the 5 LNB dish, an HD/DVR box, an HD box, and a std def box...

If I'm not mistaken I believe you need a landline for firmware updates also.

edit: I was mistaken...you don't need one for updates. Check out this thread.

OK - YOu're going Direct TV - they aren't quite as fussy about it. STRICTLY GOING BY THE TERMS OF YOUR USER AGREEMENT, you would be required to have all receivers in the house connected to the phoneline, so they could verify that all of them are at the same location. D* may have some "no phoneline fee" or waiver process that you could use - check with your dealer / the provider for any details.

Thanks for the info. I did see it in the user agreement, so I called and asked and was told that I wouldn't need the phone line except to order ppv. I just wanted to make sure I wouldn't be missing out on some other functionality.

It would run me about $30/month to get my phone line set back up, so I'd like to avoid it if possible. it would be eaiser for me to connect them up to an internet connection than a phone line...not that that would help.

You may need the line initially to activate the box and card - I can't be sure as I haven't gotten a new box yet. However, with D*, you should only need the line (as noted above) for PPV and other interactive services.

However, unless I'm mistaken, doesn't the new MPEG4 stuff allow you to connect via broadband? If not, you should be able to place PPV orders and such via the web site.

You might do some inquiring about "metered service" phoneline, something REALLY basic, if you want one at all.It may not even be advertised, or maybe not even offered.

You don't need a phone line for the new DirecTV receivers. The ethernet connection on the box is not full functional yet other than VOD.
