Should I wait for the merger?

Thread Starter
My buddy has Sirius, and with all the driving I do, I think satellite radio would be a good deal for me. My one concern has been that I'll go out and buy some sort of equipment, and then after this potential merger happens, some new and better equipment will be out that I'm tempted to buy.

Does anyone suggest waiting as I have been, or should I just go out and by something? I could be completely off with my assumption that there will be new equipment. I could also be wrong about how soon this merger was supposed to happen.

Suggestions?

In electronics there is always going to be new equipment coming out. but not necessarily better-

buy now!

You will probably be waiting awhile for this merger (if it ever happens)!!

My guess is that the merger will never happen. Besides, you can get equipment for either service quite cheap, so I'd say there's no reason to wait.

The merger is going to happen.I would wait before buying equipment.

Actually I think the merger will go through as well. I can tell you that you can buy the hardware now. Howard Stern was talking about the merger and he said that it does not matter which one you have (XM or Sirius) the equipment WILL work with the merger and no one will have to buy new equipment.

I will never be without satellite radio!

The hardware is reasonably inexpensive so the risk is slight. I would tend to hold off on equipment upgrades or replacements if I already had the service, but not on getting service in the first place.

There's a good chance that the merger will get approved but I don't think it will have any bearing on the hardware for quite some time. If you're happy with current sirius equipment, buy it now. If, however, you want XM equipment, wait a little. I've never owned any XM stuff but it seems to me that it's better designed and slightly better audio quality-wise.

I really really hope it gets approved since I just bought denon 3808, which only has XM connection.

Nothing wrong with XM connections. It's a great format. If the merger happens, then you get the best of both worlds.

Hey now, join now, get grandfathered with Sirius before they raise their rates. The lifetime subscription special is $399 and they give you 3 months to pay. When the merger happens (I believe it will def happen) you wont have to pay anything additional for what you already have.

If you are solely joining for XM's content, MLB for instance you might want to wait to see what the a la carte programming will look like after the merger.

Otherwise join the Star Dog, live long and Baba Booey.

I'd buy now. Even if the merger goes through new hardware that supports both services probably won't be available for quite a while.

I don't think this is an issue - they will probably stream XM channels over Sirius service and vice versa, bandwidth permitting. My point was - it's worth the wait if you want a specific hardware, for instance, XM portable unit with Sirius channels.

I too am on the road a lot, and have been a loyal XM subscriber since 2003, I would not trade in satellite of any sort for terrestrial radio ever again! Just figure out weather you want XM or Sirius and get a cheap sub $100 tuner. When/if the merger happens, you can always keep your old tuner if you are content and still get the same programming, or you can upgrade to a tuner that will supply both sets of content. That is at least 6mos away and in all liklihood much further down the road. In the mean time, you'll have enjoyed either service for a long time. Plus, I am sure this has been discussed, but joining the 2 providers will not double the content, as they have major overlap already, I doubt there will be two sets of "decades" two sets of 90's grunge, 2 sets of top 20, etc.

XM & Sirius both have come out with promises regarding of the merger happens.

Both have promised that equipment you have now will work with the new merged company.

but if it does not happen, go XM. More channels and the music sounds better.
