How to upscale standard dvd to hd dvd on htpc

I have two questions to ask:

1. I live in pakistan and receive my cable using a set top box and a two foot dish. Here is the link of my provider

http://www.dishtvindia.com/

The cable i receive is not high definition. Which Tv tuner would i have to use to connect my set top box with my htpc. How will i input sound from the set top box to my xtreme gamer soundcard. As i shall be using creative gigaworks 750 speakers for the sound.

2. What is the best way to upscale standar dvd to high definition format using htpc.

Thanks

We don't see a lot of people from pakistan here so you may be on your own finding a tuner that works in your area. If your cable box puts out svideo and analog audio you connect the svideo into a tuner and audio into the soundcard. If you can find a tuner that will actually tune your cable format then you can get that, connect the coax to it and then you don't need the separate set top box or to run separate audio or svideo.

Did I just totally confuse you? Hell I'm confused by my own explanation but I can't think of how to explain it any easier.

To upscale dvd to a hdtv use ffdshow, ac3filter, and either zoomplayer or Media Player Classic home theater edition. (I prefer Zoom but some feel it's too complicated with too many options.) I like all the options since I can make it work exactly how I want.

To figure out how to set up ffdshow look in the ffdshow sticky here or there are many guides and tips all over the internet.

Also there's always theatertek/ffdshow if you want to buy theatertek for your player.

Thanks....I have a few to throw your way again.

1. The set top box has a unscrambling or decoding card inserted in it. I need to pay for this card on an annual basis so i cannot see how can i bypass it's security.

2. I need to know whether this set top box outputs video in pal or ntsc format or do these set top box output video in someother form.

3. How can i upscale using windows media center edition.

how does the descrambler box connect to your display and or stereo receiver? Scart? Svideo? What? You will have to not bypass the descrambler but take the output from it and feed that to the pc.

Yes find out if it's pal. Look at any dvd you have purchased locally it should say if it's pal or ntsc. Your cable format will be the same as any legally purchased dvd you bought locally.

3. There is automatic scaling in windows without you having to do anything, but if you want even better results there is a plugin for MCE that allows you to specify the decoders used for each file format. Start out basic first and get that working, and in the meantime I'll look up that plug in and let you know where to get it. I don't recall off the top of my head.
