I gather that the new top of the line Denon will use Reon, but the rest of its new rec'rs use Faroudja.

The $5200 AVR-5308CI receiver has a Realta chip (step up from Reon), as does the $7000 AVP-A1HD prepro. As you say, only the top of the line Denons get the Silicon Optix chips.
A mistake, in my opinion - but I guess they know their market better than I do...

It looks like the new B&K Reference 70 prepro and 707 receiver will also have Reon processors.

fyzziks-

Why do you say it's a mistake? Just curious...

Oronomous,

The Genesis chip Denon uses in their 4308 and lower AVRs is well-known for macroblocking issues with many displays, and its deinterlacing performance, while significantly better than the usual solutions built in to your TV, is not up to the level of the Reon. As I understand it, adding the Reon doesn't increase the cost of production too much, and would have given close to state of the art video processing on board.

Witness the popularity of the Onkyo/Integra units with Reon - they are selling as fast as Onkyo can make them, and for good reason. They have the kind of video processing previously available only in a stand-alone video processor for $2.5K and up, now in a $1500 AVR. Amazing!

Is it worth the price and wait to purchase the $5200 Denon AVR-5308CI receiver in order to get the Realta chip? Or save the money and go with the Onkyo TX-SR905?

Sherwood Newcastle R-972 uses the Reon, and Trinnov RoomEq, rumored to be better than Audussey. Due this winter. Under $2000 as well.
