Anyone else notice the site is very slow?
Mark,

Yep, its worse than dialup.
I'm noticing the same thing. Very, very slow.
Site page to load up takes 4 minutes another 4 minutes to log in and another 4 minutes to post and another 4 minutes for the post to process.

My laserdisc player starts up faster than this.
Yea, ~2 min. delay to start downloading the post window here... sudden burst at end. On DSL Lite.

Starting to slow down again.

Yes, not quite as bad as last night, but nowhere near usual performance for this time of day.

Slow here with Explorer 7 using Road Runner. Not minutes, but 10s of seconds more than usual to switch pages. Cleared my history and temp Internet files but no help. Maybe hadn't noticed it before, but my RSS feed block icon (top toolbar) is illuminated orange on AVS, although AFAIK I've never subscribed to RSS feeds. A jump to Google or other sites is instantaneous, as usual. -- John

EDIT: Also getting "done, but with errors on page" messages (bottom of pages).

same here again

We found a spam spiders trying to post to the site over and over and over again thus making for the on again off again issues. We were finely able to identify the accounts used and the IP and thus all should be well.

Thanks

Thanks for getting it fixed.
YIKES! It is soooo slooooooooowwwwwww. I'm on dialup (26400) and everytime I go into AVS it acts as though the (my) cache is empty and each and every little picture and icon must be loaded again as if seen for the first time. This has only been for a day or two.

I hope it can be fixed as it really is slow.

I am running firefox 1.07 (as I have for the last several months (year)) and it happens if I go out of AVS and return. It does not happen when I am going between the different forums within AVS. No other website I visit does this. I have checked several times this morning.

Thanks for any help.

Yes! i must admit that this site has been very slow of late.

When i entered this site just now i.e. 5-mins ago, it was very quick ''more so than usual''

Kindest regards.

Yes, as mentioned, we have dealt with some "issues" of late with some spammers.
Today it is not reloading all pics and icons when I reenter AVSforum.

Thanks for all of your work David.

Now this is a new one. Unless the image server is down, which I have not seen it go down, I am not sure why this would be.

I probably worded my post poorly. The ad pics are not "needing" to reload (recache) each time I visit AVS now. I meant a positive, not a negative. All is well.

Wow,, this slow thing is really getting to be a bummer !!!!!!!!!!!

I have a high speed hook-up and every site on the planet loads up on my PC in the blink of an eye.

AVS seems to be hit or miss lately on how looooooong or fast it will come up.

It seems like in the last month or so it has gotten worse as far as how often it wont load up.

I go on AVS at least once a day and several times a night 7 days a week, out of those 7 days I would say at least 1 or 2 days a week its so slow I cant even get on and just give up.

At the time I am typing this post it took about 2 or 3 minutes just to get the forums to come up.

Ohh, by the way, in spite of the slow site problem I still love AVS, thanks for a great forum.

Davyo...

We do not currently see the site being slow at all. But you are currently on-line with the above post during backup times and index building.

Index building happens each morning starting at 4:00AM ET and runs for about 20 mins. (Search indexes) Then at 6:00AM ET the site closes for backsups and when it reopens it takes takes to rebuild the mysql cache. As such, the site is slower during these times. Other than that, the site has been very responsive other than the noted issues above.

No issues here either

I recommend members make sure to clear the cache often: best thing to do is set your browser to automatically clear the cache each time you close it

Ahh,,, that would explain it, when I experiance the slow times its late at night in the weee morning hours of the Las Vegas time zone.

I was not aware of the backup/indexing/cache stuff at those morning hours, please forgive my "slow" comments David.

Nothing to forgive, but thanks. I had seen the post time and thought it would be a good time to mention it.

Take care.

The site is pretty slow also my posts are not getting indexed for the search engine. It's been this way for the last couple weeks, it's a pain trying to remember which thread I posted in.
Posts get inserted into the search index every 5 mins. Thus their is a small delay in that regard. But searching for posts by your user name does find them, even the one above. (I clicked your name at the left and selected Find More Posts By User.

Thanks for the quick response, the site is great. I have a number of posts that I have done over the course of the last two weeks in the HD DVD Player and HD Software forum that have not shown up. I will give you a few examples:

This is just an example and there are more.

Is there any chance this is a browser compatibility issue? I usually use IE7, and lately loading the main page of each forum has taken 10-15 seconds, while individual threads load very quickly. I tried using Firefox (2.0.0.4), and the main forum pages load instantly. This is true if I switch back and forth between browsers, so I don't think it's a bandwidth issue or server slowdown. AVS is the only site where I've had this issue.
I wanted to test your theory and you are right. The difference is night and day between IE7 and Firefox. I'm running both on Windows Vista and Firefox is way faster.

I've made another observation that may be informative. I think both browsers take around the same amount of time to finish displaying a page (~10-15sec). However, with Firefox the text loads instantly, and the banners along the right hand side load at the end, with the text portion being slimmed down to accommodate the ads. In IE7, the text and ads load at the same time, once everything is downloaded and processed, including those slow ads at the right. The ads along the top of the page don't seem to be affected.

Edit: I noticed at the bottom of my browser, the slowdown seems to come from a slow load from avsads.com.
I saw that too and I just going to type a response. Firefox just seems to handle ad intensive sites a little better. This still shows that the site loads slow.
