And that is an interesting view you have of the Captivators and the SPUDS. Those Caps must be freakin sick. But in a good way of course.

There is room to rest your feet on the back row. These seats are my favorite in Rob's theater. The tactile feel of the SPUDs is incredible. What amazes me is the tight bass your hear/feel in this spot despite being right against the back wall.

Thanks. Again, I was just wondering. It does seem like an outstanding theater. I don't have the space for real theater seats so I just make do with a couch and two other chairs.

Same here. I use a sectional but I'll probably try to move to theater seating at some point in the future.

Rob's theater is outstanding. I don't know that I'll ever have the funds to achieve something similar but its a thrill to experience.

Thanks Larry, I keep tweaking and it continues to sound better. Lots of changes since you were here in October. I'd like to have another HT Meet this Spring and Fugueness is considering one that would feature the new Terraform XL's.

I found these SonoColumn bass traps from Auralex. I think they make for a nice finished look for the S8's Surrounds. Now I'm thinking how I can incorporate more of them into the room. It never ends ...

And the current front config.

RKM, they are up . They went up in a few hours. I was able to put two on the ceiling by using your method. I have not listened yet but hopefully tommorow. It will have to be with music since my other amp is being fixed. Thanks for all your help . BTW, I saw those SonoColumns as well. They look interesting. I am probably done for a while with treatments but Auralex sure makes interesting stuff.

It's funny cause I really like the look of the SonoColumns but the SO just rolled her eyes when she saw them. Oh well, can't win em all.

Glad you got the panels up and I'm looking forward to some pics and your impressions.

Thanks Dan, there is a lot going on there and not everyone's taste but I kind of like the unusual mix of textures/colors and design. Keith Yates mentioned that the ideal treatment for my back wall would be a combination of broadband absorption and diffusion. My haphazard approach aside, it seems to be working.

BTW, the wood screens have names, they are:

"THE BLESSING"
"THE FORTUNE"
"THE LONGEVITY"
"THE HAPPINESS"

I really like how the SonoColumns run into the S8s.

Room treatments are something I need to consider. However, Bryan at GIK says the most important thing for me to do is turn my room 90 degrees so I have symetrical side walls. (The left side of the family room is currently open to the dinette/kitchen.) I only wish Bryan had been there to tell me this before I installed four Speakercraft speakers into the ceiling. I'm not sure how easy it will be to patch 10" circles in the sheet rock.

I'm looking forward to your spring meet.

Having been the recipient of some of Bryan's wisdom, I agree that a rectangle is the easiest space to treat. But there are so many other factors that come into play generalizations are dangerous. Measure twice, cut once comes to mind .

I can tell you that sheet rock patching gets easier with experience. Blending in the wall texturing is the hard part and hiring someone to do can be a good idea as it is a common skill set for const guys and handyman types. I'm pretty good at it myself but I have a go-to guy for big projects.

Rob, so I was able to listen to some music last night. I am extreemly pleased with the results. The bass, and rest of the music is much more defined. The instruments seem more indipendent of each other. The music seems more in front of me rather then floating in the corners. On one album I heard the the individual finger picks of the bass as opposed to them just running together. On Tool's 10,000 days the music cleared up so much that I was able to make out lyrics that were running together before. All in all a very worth while investment. Thanks.

That's great news Mike. I'm sure there are a lot of people who would see similar benifits if they could/would apply some room treatments. It seems they would rather upgrade speakers and electronics rather than deal with the more complicated room acoustics problems .

MikeDuke and RMK, how do you guys mount the 242 in general?

They come with eye hooks installed and heavy gauge wire and you just hang them like a painting (single hook is fine). Ceiling mounting is a little trickier. There may be better ways but I used L brackets (one on each end 4' apart and used self tapping screws into the panel ends. If you pre paint the backet the same color as the panel it makes for an almost invisible mount.

For the wall I just used picture hooks and they hang pretty good with the supplied wire. For the ceiling I copied what Rob did and it worked perfectly. I used the "L" brackets and they worked like a charm. Plus I wall mounted some tri traps. That was done in a similar way. I used a combination of "L" brackets and velcro. I applied velcro to the wall and the other piece of velcro to the Tri Trap Then the whole trap was attached to an "L" bracket. It worked great. That was an idea from "Ovalnut" All 8 of my traps went up pretty much without a problem. But it is still time consuming

I just received and installed some new acoustic panels from ATS Acoustics. Price is comparable to GIK but build quality is if anything a bit better. As to performance, that is difficult to assess. I purchased these specifically to deal with a slap echo in the back of the room. In that regard, mission accomplished and the audio is better than ever .

Some current pics from the room.

I have to say that this is one of my favorite set-ups on this site. It truly is a "home" theater! It is complex in approach but simplistic as well. I really like it!
RMK, are your ATS panels their regular fabric or microsuede? Just wondering if there is any difference in appearance or effectiveness.

Thanks Jrunr .

Your description of a "home" theater was my intention all along. I have always maintained that I would not make any modifications to the space that could not be undone in a long weekend. I wanted to be able to enjoy movies/concerts at home without the candy counter.

Not to denigrate some of the absolutely beautiful HT builds posted here and in the Dedicated HT Thread but my goals were less ambitious, time consuming and expensive.

We watched 2012 last night and it is only the second movie I had gone out to see since building the HT room (Avatar on IMAX being the other). I have to say that both the picture and sound of 2012 were MUCH better in my HT. So in that sense it is mission accomplished.

Regular fabric and they are close but do not exactly match the GIK's (good thing the room is poorly lit ). As to effectiveness, I was looking to correct a slap echo from the side walls and they have done that.

RMK,

In your setup, it appears that your surrounds are T8s, which act as monopoles. A lot of people argue that bi/dipoles are better in this location. Have you noticed any issues with this?

Thanks. And I'm totally with Jrunr regarding your setup. I'm hoping to get mine to provide an experience similar to yours at some point down the road.

When I had my Revel Ultima speakers I had the Embrace bi/dipole surrounds and before that Axiom QS8's. I was never impressed with bi/dipoles for music and I really like the T8's and S8's as surrounds for music and movies.

RMK, again, that is one serious looking room you got there. It is not as big as your screen, but I just put in an order for a new Samsung C8000 46in LED TV. It will be replacing a 34in Sony Tube. With my room size and seating distance I think it will be a nice upgrade. I am still loving the treatments. Not sure I mentioned it, but if you click on the link to my system, you can see pictures of the treatments on the walls. I was so worried that they would dominate the room. But the truth is, I hardly notice them now. But your room continues to impress. Congrats

Thanks Mike, that Samsung shold provide a nice PQ upgrade. The GIK panels/traps blend in very nicely, did Brian help you with the placement?

I was probably one of the most difficult customers he had. When I started out I only wanted 4 total traps. I did not want a triangle thing in my corners. I was very concerned on how they would look. Then I went to 6 and then to 8. I still did not want the Tri Traps even though he said they were better. But when I saw how to wall mount them I got them. He was also recommending ceiling ones but I was against it at first but I finally warmed up to it. All in all he was very helpful and stuck with me through all my questions and email. Now, like I said, I hardly know they are there. I hope the TV is a nice improvement. I also like the fact that the profile is much smaller. It should make the room look much better.

Well I made a major move (for me) on the video front. I have a JVC RS-35 coming that will replace my HD-100 (RS2). I am hoping for a nice improvement in PQ (i.e. brightness, color accuracy and sharpness) and noise level. The RS35 is only 19db in normal lamp mode and with my projector position it will be nice to have a nearly silent projector.

I'm getting it next week and if any of you local guys want to check it out let me know.

That's great. Is the screen staying as is? Also, will you have it professionally calibrated? I am going back and forth on who I should eventually pick. I have two names that are basically the same price. They are both well know, I just don't know who to pick. But enough about my problems in your thread. Looking forward to seeing your new projector.

Not sure regarding the screen. Current is a StudioTek 130 106" 16:9 and I'm in no hurry to replace it as I like having the plasma option in the room.

Thanks to Fugueness’s recommendation, I will be able to have Jeff Meier (umr) calibrate the RS-35 when he is out this way in June. That'll give me some time to play and get some hours on the lamp.
