What are your most recent Hi-Res purchases? - Page 82

I finally had a chance to sit down and listen to Caravanserai. I can say that this SACD was well worth the cost of admission! I listened to it end to end a few days ago and then a few tracks today with a borrowed Oppo 95. I used the DSD setting using the stereo analog outputs to my Parasound 2100. The SQ is really almost analog like with excellent imaging and quite a bit of depth. I'm no audiophile so my terminology might not be the best.

I played the RBCD version of Caravanserai recently and it really is no comparison which is the better version. I hope the upcoming MOFI SACD is just as good so that many others can experience this title in all its glory.

2 SACDs were released from Virgin and remastered by Simon Heyworth in 2001: Tangerine Dream's Rubycon and Songs of Sanctuary by Adiemus (both hybrid stereo). I have both and in Adiemus SACD I hardly hear a difference between layers, sometimes feels more analogue and some clearer details but you can't get more.

I believe that the awesome factor is not present in Rubycon but I would recommend this SACD to any fan of TD or stereo SACD listeners.

I've had rubycon for a while now, and I really like it.
like you said, the AQ is not a huge showcase for what SACD can do, but it's better than the cd, and miles better than Can's Tago Mago sacd (for instance) if you're into seventies euro experimentation.
wow, just realized i posted about buying rubycon in this thread . . . in 2007! time flies.

Recieved Rolling Stones Sticky Fingers and Steve Wonder Songs in the Key of Life last week...mixed bag with these. I think the AQ of both Beggar's Banquet and Innervisions beats these two, but still solid titles..is it worth the $$s...??? Some of the songs on sticky fingers are amazing, some congested/grainey. Probably the master tapes, but a little disapointed after reading some of the reviews.

Ordered some MoFi titles...
Patricia Barber Modern Cool
Stevie Ray Vaughan - Couldn't Stand the Weather
Keb Mo - Keb Mo

Fleetwood Mac - Rumours

Paid through the nose for this ($95) on eBay but it's an all-time favorite and I missed out on 3 previous sales/auctions.

Seems to me there are plenty of small details that comes through in the DVD-A format that I never heard on the original CD.

This will get long time, heavy rotation.

I am now on the hunt for Sinatra, Live at the Sands.

I'd be interested in knowing if you find it and at what price. I own that one.

Sinatra is in the $100-200 range these days, although very few actual sales. I bought and sold that a couple years ago for a fraction of that. Should have hung onto it. IMO, the Basie band is the real attraction for this concert. It's not "real" surround either.

Ambiance and crowd noises in the surrounds? Even so, it's still Frank and Count Basie in hi-def audio, and how bad can that be?

My last was Diana Krall's 'The Look of Love'. From Amazon.
A very good album.

Randy Brecker: Some Skunk Funk (interesting title to say the least).

I also bought Dave Brubeck's Jazz At Oberlin SACD but I'm taking it back as it is only a mono recording. The one review on sa-cd.net was not very positive.

I had a chance to listen to a few tracks from Pater Gabriel's Up 5.1 SACD. All I can say is if you are a fan of Peter Gabriel you need to get this SACD. From the very first track you know right away the SQ of this MCH SACD is excellent. It would have been nice if all of Gabriel's SACDs were in MCH but this is the only one.

Thanks for that info. I have been looking at Gabriel's SACDs for some time, but never pulled the trigger. As I have become an MCH snob, Up is the only one on the list now.

Jeff,

There were two recent Up SACDs on eBay with both ending at $41.00 plus shipping. I have both Roxy Music's Avalon and Beck's Sea Change and I feel Up sounds as good as those two titles IMO. I'm looking forward to listening to Up straight through at higher volume levels than I did this morning.

Thanks. I looked quick on amazon and got sticker shock. Forty-ish dollars isn't too wacky. I just need to put some time and energy into finding one. I should look for the Beck title as well.

Martin,

I think you will enjoy the PB Modern Cool SACD. I have Modern Cool, Nightclub and Verse, easily some of my favorite SACDs. All excellent sounding recordings made better on SACD. I would be interested in your thoughts of the Keb' Mo' SACD when you have a chance to listen to it.

Concord is out of the SACD making business so it's unlikely. Even Amazon has given up on this one. Possible some old stock might show up somewhere, maybe Hong Kong. But it's not too hard to find in the usual haunts.

It's worth searching for though and worth paying a bit extra for.

The 1st step is recognizing you have a problem and I certainly don't...

Just ordered:
Nat King Cole - The Nat King Cole Story
Junior Wells - Hoodoo Man
Dire Straits - Love Over Gold
Aperion Verus Grand Towers

I'm building a legacy for my kids...it's what father's day is all about.

Bill,

I have Blue Cafe in HDCD and that's amazing, so my expectations are high. Music Direct selling for $49...can't touch that price anywhere else that I could find.

I'll be sure to post my thoughts.

We'll I thought I heard Stevie Ray Vaughan before.

Folks, the MoFi "Couldn't Stand the Weather" is reference material. Tin Pan Alley is worth the price of admission alone. This one makes your hair stand on end. If you like blues rock, great guitar and drum work, this one's a can's miss. The Texas Flood SACD sounds veiled and lifeless compaired to this one. I have several Mofi SACDs/Gold Discs, but this one is right at the top.

I don't believe I ever suggested you had a problem. I don't think I have problem either just trying to inject a little humor.

I have the Cafe Blue HDCD and it is a fine sounding disc. Music Direct is selling the Companion SACD for $49.99 and Modern Cool is $59.99. Either way these are excellent prices for the PB SACDs compared to Amazon and eBay. I would like to have Cafe Blue on SACD but the recent prices on eBay are way above what I'm willing to pay.

I absolutely second getting PG's "Up" - the track "I Grieve" is one I often use as a demo, the sonics are simply superb and the song itself is beautiful.

Any idea how the MoFi of "Couldn't Stand The Weather" compares to the Japanese version? I'm pretty happy with the JSACD and unlike the MoFi it includes bonus tracks, but if the SQ is better...

Here is a discussion of the MOFI CSTW over at the SH forum. In this thread there are some comparisons to the JSACD version.

Thanks, Bill-I was looking at that same Hoffman thread earlier today!

How are you able to tell the SACD.NET review pertains specifically to the JSACD? I see two listings but I was under the impression that the MoFi was at least the 3rd release of this in SACD. Either way the price of the MoFi is very reasonable.

In each review it shows the label for each specific title. It shows Epic as the label for which I believe is the JSACD, although I thought it was Sony release. As far as I know there was only two releases of CSTW but I could be wrong. Its interesting that some artists like Miles Davis and others have SACD titles with more than one version from different labels. This is where I find sa-cd.net so useful for finding information about each version.
