1. The 96 remaster is louder and brighter, harsher at reference levels +. The SACD is much more natural and appealing to my ears.

2. The vocals. The 96 remaster is definitely more forward and seems to be a better mix. The SHM at normal listening levels is a little recessed but does bloom more at higher volumes.

3. Bass/Percussion. This is where the SACD really shines. Much more controlled with great attack and decay...great impact and detail. Very nice indeed.

4. Soundstage/Imaging...again the SACD is better in this area as well.

Overall my impression is this is a definite improvement in all areas with the exception of the vocals. Not quite as good as the S/T SACD, but still very good in my opinion. I'll be playing the SACD at home and use the CD for the car.

Martin,

Thanks for your review. I might have to get this one but maybe I'll hold out to see if cdjapan has another sale on SHM-SACDs.

The question was "Are they rereleasing...." The DVD-A was what, something like 11 years ago. Now if the question was 'Did they re-release this in hi-rez' then the answer would have been yes.

Bill,

I think the overall "level" of the recording may be throwing some listeners off. It's noticeably lower on the SACD...I got the SPL out for my comparison with the cd remaster and there's about a 3-4 db difference for the same tracks. Doesn't bother me...that's what the amp/volume control is for. The background is definitely darker on the SACD as welldeathly quiet.

Again, the only knock I have are the slightly recessed vocals...they just don't stand out like the cd. The SACD might be closer to the artists wishes, but it leaves me wanting just a little. Of course my remastered CD was my benchmark for compairison...the volcals may be jacked up in that issue??? Not sure how that version compairs to other 16/44.1 issues.

Nice, been wondering how it is. Put up your thoughts after you've had a chance to listen.

Martin,

I agree that sometime the overall loudness of a recording is stressed too much when you can just turn up the volume. When I get the chance I will do a comparison to my original release Love Over Gold CD to the remastered version to compare the vocals. I'll let you know what I find.

Brock,

Nice buy. You will really enjoy this SACD. Avalon, Sea Change and PG's Up are my best sounding MCH SACDs.

Another great buy on an excellent SACD. I have this one as well but I haven't listened to it in quite awhile. I'll have to do that sometime soon. I might have to add it to my favorites list of MCH SACDs.

14 of 18 recommend it on sacd.net but some of the bad reviews sacd.net and amazon sort of scare me

I hope I like it, but it doesn't really matter to me since I will probably sell it since it has a pretty high asking price on amazon.

Or if I don't like it, or if the wife makes me sell it, I might consider giving a "fair" price to an avs member

I hope I like a avalon but honestly I don't think I know any of their songs. We will see. I just knew it was a great deal and had to jump. Thank god for credit cards :/

I hope I like the Roger waters sacd, but I have my doubts. I like some pink Floyd music but not much and it's a live recording ... Right ?? So I have my doubts but I hope I get a great surprise with this one

Bill did u mean the Roger waters is upon your favorite MCH sacd's or not. I'm confused. Does it sound good?

I think you will like Avalon as it is kind of a laidback type of album. Although the musicians on it as well as the recording itself is outstanding. I have several CD versions of Avalon with the remastered version having an HDCD layer which sounds excellent.

Be careful with CC's as you can run up some serious coin buying music. I know first hand but I was using Paypal with my secret SACD slush fund account. Needless to say the fund is quite low from the speed buying I have done recently.

I was just looking a sa-cd.net and the ratings are not the best. This was one of the first SACDs I bought when they first came out. After buying 3 or 4 SACDs I stopped buying them. Now I wished I hadn't as they were mostly under $20.00 at the time.

I haven't really sat down and listened to In The Flesh since basically rebuilding my system. So I'll have to give it a good listen when I get a chance. So no it is not among my favorites and after reading a few reviews it might not be. But I'll wait till I hear it to form an opinion.

Just to be sure it was the In The Flesh and not the Ca Ira SACD you bought? I'm just curious as this one is about $20.00.

Thanks bill

I thought that's what you ment about the Roger waters sacd but I wasnt sure. Who knows just because it might not be a stellar sacd I could still possibly like it? Who knows

Ohh and CC's haha I'll pay off what I bought ... Eventually. I have a huge problem when it comes to spending money. If I think I'm getting a good deal I'll usually buy it without thinking. Is there a rehab for people who over use CC's? If so I need to check In. And I could use a rehab for my addiction to MCH MUSIC

I checked your link, and no that's not what I bought. Go on eBay and search Roger waters in the flesh sacd and use the advanced search option and select other countries and sold items and you should see the sacd I bought.

Does this link work

Brock-I use the reviews on SACD.NET as a reference as well, but you should really judge them for yourself, especially with music you're not familiar with. Interestingly, 14 of 18 people recommend In The Flesh with a 3.5 star average, and 14 of 18 recommend another Waters release (The Wall, Live In Berlin) but it averages 4.5 stars. Give it a spin or two and if it's not your cup of tea sell it and make some cash

My constant and fanatical checking of eBay amazon and now audiogon seems to be paying off lately. Although I buy some of these titles to sell them so I can keep the ones I like.

Steve

Ill give reviews for all of the sacd's I've bought recently. However I'm not the best at describing things. I can use words like good or bad but I'll do my best. Plus my system may not be as top notch as some of the other avs members but it's what I got and without it I'd need to be committed into an insane asylum. Music gets me through each day, day by day.

Sounds good, looking for your thoughts on the discs. I'm a huge Floyd fan so the Waters SACDs are something I'll never part with. If you're happy with your A/V gear then no need to upgrade--it's usually a lot more expensive compared to buying SACDs. Within the past year a "friend" upgraded every piece of gear in his house while doubling his MCH music collection and his bank account is on life support
post #3023 of 9855
I won't be upgrading my system any time soon, or for a long time either. I'd rather just keep buying SACD's anyhow
post #3024 of 9855
Hey guys, what's the poop on surface scratches on the disc? Some of these desirable titles are only available used. Sometimes I see them listed as "Acceptable" condition, with terms like "scuffs", "some scratches but plays perfectly" or some such thing. I've not tried any disc with a gouge, but played some pretty scratched and scuffed ones and can't hear any problem.

Also, is there a recommended system for cleaning/buffing? I usually simply wash any used disc or rental with dishsoap before it goes in the Oppo.

Glad I didn't get into a bidding war with you!

I found Fagan NightFly Trilogy which seems an incredible bargain for SteelyDan/Fagan fans and includes kamakiriad.

And Bill Mac found me a low-priced source for this set, thnx Bill! You guys are great!

Maybe we should take turns on eBay auctions? I just saved a search for "roger waters sacd." The completed listings all look reasonably priced. They might not have been so if a few of us were angling for them. Just a thought.

The only Roger waters in the flesh that actually sold is the one I just bought. The other in the flesh had a buy it now for over 100 dollars. Cheapest on amazon is over 90 and the last one that sold on audiogon went for 69
post #3029 of 9855
Well, I'd never pay anywhere near 100. Maybe they'll scale back their expectations.

i looked at the trilogy link you posted and it shows this:

DTS 5.1 Surround, Dolby 5.1 Surround, and Advanced Resolution PCM Stereo mixes of all three albums

i'm guessing that's why it's cheaper - no dvd audio.
