It was available at Elusive Disc but now is back ordered till 12/30/11. Music Direct had it as well but now it shows "Awaiting Repress". It looks like Acoustic Sounds is the only game in town at $35.00. So I guess it was well worth buying WYWH early.

I just did a 24/96K HD Tracks download of Fleetwood Mac - Tusk. $18 with 10% discount code (Thanks10). I haven't listened to it yet but an interesting release not available on DVD-A or SACD.

Also picked up Sam Cooke - At the Copa SACD/MCH from e-bay...thanks for the tips on this one.

Just bought:

Sam Cooke: At the Copa SACD

I have been wanting to buy this SACD for awhile as it is highly rated and in 5.1. I got it from importcds for $12.98 shipped so it was a bargain IMO.

I just got my 2012 MusicDirect catalog and saw the Japan SACD of Cream's Wheels on Fire and wondered if anyone has or heard it. I don't know if it's two channel or MCH. A little steep price wise but would love to hear hi-rez version

If it is a SHM-SACD it will be 2CH as all SHM-SACDs are currently 2CH only. I personally feel the SHM-SACD pricing is way out of line for a 2CH only SACD. Add to that the inconsistent SQ from disc to disc. No more SHM-SACDs for me unless the prices are cut in half.

Good price...I don't search the importCD site very often (their USPS shipping takes about 7 weeks to ship to JP). I ended up buying a used copy from e-bay to ensure I got the SACD vs. CD. Apparently the UPCs are the same???

I've got the SHM-SACD. Some good info over at the Hoffman site on the SHMs as well. Here's a link to a good discussion of the SHM-SACD discs. http://www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/sh...m+sacd&page=25

I think this is probably the best version available, but it does come at a premium price and I don't think it's reference material...limitations with original recording.

Claus's list from the link above...he's a solid poster.

My updated list (SHM-SACDs I own)...

Outstanding (far superior to the originals IMO)
Black Sabbath - Master of Reality
Caravan - In the Land of Grey and Pink
Cream - Wheels of Fire
Bill Evans - Explorations
Gentle Giant - Octopus
Jimmy Smith - The Cat
Traffic - John Barleycorn Must Die
Wishbone Ash - Argus
The Who - Who's Next

Good
Anne-Sophie Mutter - Carmen-Fantasie
Bruckner - Symphony No. 4
Dire Straits - Love Over Gold
Bill Evans - Moon Beams
Fairport Convention - Liege and Lief
Free - Fire and Water
Getz/Gilberto - ST
Astrud Gilberto - ST
Elton John - ST
Elton John - GYBR
Oscar Peterson - We Get Requests
Art Pepper - Meets the Rhythm Section
Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers
Rolling Stones - Tattoo You
Sonny Rollins - Way Out West
Thin Lizzy - Black Rose
Stevie Wonder - Innervisions

Average (I prefer the originals)
Beethoven - Symphonies Nos. 5 & 7
Blind Faith - Blind Faith
Eric Clapton - 461 Ocean Blvd
Eric Clapton - Layla
Dire Straits - ST
Kiss - Destroyer
John Mayall - Bluesbreakers
Rainbow - Rising (btw average/avoid)
Steely Dan - Aja
Steely Dan - Gaucho
Rod Stewart - Gasoline Alley
10cc - Original Soundtrack
T.Rex - Electric Warrior (MC-SACD is much better)
Uriah Heep - Look at Yourself

Avoid (originals CD/LPs or remaster are much (!) better)
Allman Brothers - At Fillmore East
Asia - ST
Black Sabbath - Paranoid
Moody Blues (sold)
Police (sold)
Rainbow - LLRR
Velvet Underground (sold)

I agree with Claus' outstanding list, but I would now add Camel Snow Goose to that list. I would add Goat's Head Soup to the Good list. I would move Uriah Heep and Dire Straits (ST), to the good list.

Love Over Gold is close to outstanding.

I wonder if anyone will ever get around to releasing anything by the great Harry Nilsson. (RIP)
He had some amazing productions. I distinctly remember hearing a quad version of Nilsson Shmilsson on........ 8 track. It sounded fabulous. Maybe it wouldn't be too hard to slap the original onto a SACD without redoing the mix. I'd definitely be a buyer.

The entire album was (and still is) great, but the show stopper for me was "Jump Into the Fire" with the percussion rotating around your head, although it might not have the same appeal to my more sophisticated present-day taste in music. (Unless I were to try to reproduce the "altered" state of conciousness I was in during my first experience with quad - fairly unlikely).

Really, Martin, Gentle Giant Octopus and Wishbone Ash Argus? Wow, they take me back. And better than the originals? I'll have to pick them up even if they are only stereo.

Hey Jeff,

It's a confussing post I know...but the list belongs to "Cluas" from the SH site. I am old enough to appreciate those titles though.
Not to beat a dead horse but the list of SHM-SACDs that Claus rates (that Martin posted) from over at the Hoffman forum clearly indicates to me the poor value of SHM-SACDs. There are 47 SHM-SACDs in that list that Claus rates. Out of that only 9 are outstanding and 17 are listed as good. The remaining 21 are listed as average or to avoid buying. For me that doesn't instill much confidence in the SQ quality of SHM-SACDs. Why spend close to $60.00 on a SHM-SACD title when the same title on RBCD could possibly sound as good if not better.

It will be an even greater bargain after you experience the sound quality. On any scale it is one of the best sounding surround titles out there. I put it in the winners circle along with Avalon, Boys And Girls, Hotel California and Rumours.

Happy Listening.

Mike,

Thanks for your thoughts. I'm glad to hear you are happy with the Sam Cooke SACD. I will look forward to getting this disc and listening to it even more so now. Your winners circle list has some outstanding titles in it. I am fortunate to own all those titles as well and I agree that they are all winners.

I am 1000% with you, Bill. But usually my strongly expressing that opinion results in someone becoming offended. Of course, that's true regardless the subject when I express my opinion.

I still have the Friday Night in San Francisco to listen to yet and have high hopes as it came highly recommended.

Hopefully this weekend will allow me to book some time in my theater with it configured for SACD/DVD-A titles.

C'mon pepar, we're all friends here and Happy Thanksgiving!

FWIW, I did a thorough A/B of the Who's Next SHM($60) and a copy of the Hoffman mastered CD($8) and found any differences to be so minor and potentially biased by not being a blind comparison that Who's Next was the first and most likely the last SHM-SACD I will spring for.
Who's Next is not the greatest of recordings to begin with.

That said, I have bought a few SHM-CDs and they were definitely better than their counterparts.

Martin,

It is a good price and a bit confusing trying to figure out which is which. I called importcds and asked the CSA if I was buying the SACD of the CD. He said it was the 5.1 Surround version. Although I think he was reading from the product page. He said if it was not the SACD that I could return the disc no problem. I did a little research and the SACD comes in a digipak and the CD is in a jewel case. So when this package arrives I'll open it up hoping it is the digipak.

Hey Jeff,

I agree with Milt that we're all friends here. As much as we all offend someone at one time or another it always (almost) works out for the better.

Hopefully you will get some time to listen to some music this weekend. I know I hope I can as well. Let us know what you think of the Friday Night in San Francisco SACD.

Thanks for posting this. I just purchased this as well. I bought it on amazon through import CDs with the link you provided. It cost me a total of 13.98.

I'm interested in hearing comments on how they used the surround channels for the Sam Cooke title.

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!! This is the best sounding hi-res stereo I have ever heard. And that is was recorded analog makes it even more amazing. Thank you, Bill, and whomever else recommended this title.

I think you should kick back and embrace the scene from your avatar then throw Friday Night In San Francisco in your player. No need to fret as I'm sure you will enjoy it as this SACD has a three dimensional quality to it. You will think it is in surround if you have a few Coronas to go with your music selection.

Brock,

No problem as I'm happy to pass on info like this. I just hope we both get the SACD and not the RBCD. As I posted earlier (#3982) there is some confusion about the Sam Cooke At The Copa SACD/RBCD. But I'm optimistic that it will be the SACD though.

Jeff,

From what I have read this title is supposed to be outstanding in surround.

Here is a link that discusses the mixing of the Sam Cooke At The Copa SACD.

http://mixonline.com/recording/maste...ke_remastered/

Here is a link for this title from sa-cd.net.

http://www.sa-cd.net/showtitle/1173

Some interesting quotes from one of the reviews on sa-cd.net.

"We did absolutely everything conceivable to replicate the actual sonic ambience of the Copa and Sam Cooke's performance there." Further in the release it says: In the 5.1 version, the mumuring of the audience, the sound of silverware on china, of ice cubes in highball glasses, is subtly discernable. Sound engineers looked at floor plans of the club and watched the scene from the film Goodfellas that was shot in the Copa just before it closed in order to gauge the space and its acoustic characteristics so as to make the new mix "true" to the room. In this reviewer's opinion, ABKCO should get an award for their work with this disc. This is clearly what is meant by the phrase "above and beyond the call of duty." I only wish other companies took their work as seriously.

Another quote from the same review.

Upon hearing a playback at a private listening of the 5.1 surround sound program of his late brother's Copa performance, L.C. Cooke exclaimed with tears in his eyes, "It's like he's here with us again!"

Jeff,

As always my pleasure! I'm very glad to hear you enjoyed the Friday Night In San Francisco SACD. I will have to give it a spin next chance I get as I haven't listened to it in awhile.
