Drat, went to look at the details, this is a regular CD .

Sorry Jay, it would have been a real treat if it was Hi Rez...Anyway it's a great listen, in fact it's pretty fun!

The 2.0 HDTracks verion of 'DJ' just made me want the MCH SACD all the more...great disc/perfomance. I appearantly didn't want it enough.

The winning bidder may have actually bid more than what was eventually paid. His/her shown price will only be incremented a bit higher than the next highest bid.

Bidding tip for you: Most people think in round numbers, so I place bids like $26.49 instead of $25.

Indeed, I mentioned this very thing a few posts ago. Soular Energy and Listen Here are as good as it gets. Gene and Ray were/are soul mates. RIP.

I'm so sorry....in a good way! I should have never come to this thread in the first place. I was buying SACD's and DVD-Audio's several years ago and stopped, foolishly thinking there's nothing else I need in the way of hi-res audio. I guess I was wrong! LOL

Back to Amazon I go................................

It truly is such a good feeling to know you're not alone.

I see from posts by others in this thread, that like me, some of you have also gone from basic pop/rock types in our younger years to exploring other genres (jazz, blues, classical) in the quest for the sound quality, and surround mixes we have come to discover on some of these really outstanding discs.

In the course of this metamorphosis, I've come to appreciate not only the SQ and surround mix, but also the musicianship, and compositional complexity of these other genres.

I find it fascinating that in the search for quality source material, my tastes have been expanded, and that benefit might well eclipse the original goal.

Have a great day one and all,

Jay

I'll repeat what I posted a while back. Any high-res release, (or any release in general), with Ray Brown on it will not fail to please. He only played with the best, and only with musicians who could swing.

Suggestion: "SuperBass 2" Another flawless Telarc master.

Jay,

As you well know you are not alone in the quest to find SACDs. I have also gone from listening to mostly classic rock to mostly jazz. As much as I would like to get everything on SACD or DVD-A it sometimes is not possible. I am really getting into Bill Evans and he has many CDs and SACDs available. I recently bought the Complete Village Vanguard Recordings 1961 on CD and it is an excellent sounding box set. There are two Bill Evans SACDs that are from these recordings. The two SACDs are Sunday At The Village Vanguard and Waltz For Debby. I read up on these recordings and I found that some preferred the SQ of the 3 CD box set to that of the SACDs. So in order to explore new artists and music I am not limiting myself to just buying SACDs or DVD-As. If you do research on specific artists and titles sometimes you will find CDs that rival the SQ of the much more expensive SACD versions.

And the flip side of the coin is that the quality of the music is not always worthy of the high resolution format.

That was resoundingly made clear to me by the three titles that arrived today. One (strangely enough with Ray Brown) exhibited the best of what the format has to offer, and the other two (Eleanor McEvoy) represent what has gone wrong in the overly processed, compressed, cut and paste mangling prevalent in current popular music offerings.

The SACD of Ray Brown, Monty Alexander, and Russel Malone exploits the possibilities of the SACD format with a recording that transports the listener to the actual recording event.

The two McEvoy titles, Yola, and Snapshots were enjoyable in the context of the well recorded vocals, but I couldn't play it loudly due to the distortion artifacts caused by the overly processed techniques of compression, and dubbing in artifical elements. My system has become good enough that it makes poor recordings painfully obvious (dearly love the new speakers!)

Wow, nice, wish I could have warned you about that Elvis Costello though. IMHO "North" is one of the worst albums ever made, I listened to my copy (bought many many moons ago) exactly once, and I found no redeeming qualities in the music. Hopefully your experience will be different.

I love it, funny thing when I was a teen I must of heard the first two of their album and forgot about them or rather moved to some other group more intense. I rediscovered them of the pass 4 years or so, they're music can be moody, atmospheric, and sometimes world ethnic sounding..They tend to be all over the place from album to album. I forget which album shows horrid recording production but once you're listening you're in a trance..Bottom line is great music.

Just purchased Peter Gabriel's Up SACD from our own Bill Mac for an excellent price.
As you can expect, dealing with Bill was straight forward and easy.
Why I didn't get this disc before is a mystery to me as I have the other Gabriel SACDs and it's MCH, woohoo!
Can't wait to give it a spin.
Thanks Bill.

It took me a little while to get use to this on, but the production is incredible along with the surround mix..And it's load Great buy, it's been some time I've given it a listen..The bonus here was dealing with good ol Bill.

Milt99,

It was a pleasure dealing with you as well. I'm sure you will enjoy Up especially since you are a PG fan. I listened to this the other day and it sounds great in 5.1. Enjoy!

Dan,

Thanks for the kind words. I agree as my first experiences with PG was with the So CD back in 1986. Up is a bit different than So but I still enjoy sitting down to give it a good listen.

Martin,

Not really a stupor when you are buying less than 20 SACDs at a time. I have the AP version of Way Out West and it is a great sounding SACD. But I guess one tends to expect that from AP.

Just picked up 2 cheap DVD-As...Inside the Music series. Women on Top and New Wave (various artists). These have mixed reviews, but music/artists I like and not normally available in Hi-Res.

I was watching the sale on e-bay and they went for $30 and $21 used, I just purchased on Amazon new for <$5 each. For this price it's worth the chance, and can resale if bad. Important to do your research before bidding on e-bay.

AP just re-released some older titles that were previously OOP...$25/disc vs their standard $30. I'm a fan of their work as well. The Universal JP SHM-SACDs have some of the same jazz titles and have received solid reviews...just can't see paying $30-$40 more per disc...same 2.0. I'd rather buy 2 APs than 1 SHM.

Jay,

Interesting comments regarding the McEvoy recordings. I've not listened to mine in a while (Yola and Early Hours), but the compression/dubbing issues did not raise their head in my listening. Could be my system/old ears, but I always considered these as quality recordings...usually my ears are sensitive to the ear bleeding compression, especially at higher volumes, and I didn't experience this with her. The reviews I've seen are unanimously positive so I'm surprised by above. For me, it's more the songs that keep me from listening more. I'm not slamming the performance, just a mixed bag for me regarding her musical styling.

I'll have to pull them out again.

I got this in the mail today, HOLY MOLY if this one doesn't get ya movin, call the doc, take your pulse, heart must have quit beating.

After the first song played I was hooked and grabbed the disc notes. Originally recorded in 1989, it was mastered for surround in 2004. Sound quality is a solid 10, surround mix is a stage perspective, and it too rates a 10
in the instrumental department, but the vocals are weak in the surround mix.

This is a stage perspective, instruments are positioned all the way around. Interestingly, lead guitar and lead vocals do not come from the same place, vocals are center, and lead guitar is located close to the left speaker.

Byther has a great voice, it's smooth, clear, and sounds great, but vocals are recessed, and understated in the mix. It takes some effort to make out the lyrics.

All in all, I thought this title ROCKED, upbeat for a blues album, every track was very good, and I would highly recommend it.
