All too often when one places the fronts for best soundstage/imaging it does not align with where the bass should eminate in order to offset room modes. Of course if you have great acoustic treatments and flexibility in placement it can work out just fine indeed.

I've now got two good, matching subs and I've placed them in the room so they interact to lessen room modes. I use a DSP system (Audyssey MultEQXT32 with Pro kit) that integrates the subs perfectly with the rest of the speakers. This approach frees one to buy and place the fronts for one goal: best soundstage and imaging. So they really don't need a low F3. Rather, accurate mids and highs are the goal for the towers. And of course an exact timbre match CC and surrounds, all well-placed, will optimize MC music. And for film, you'll want all that and some subs anyway...

Thanks for the input...good points!

Speaking of arbitrary...what I've noticed with a lot of the early jazz stereo recordings...many like the blue note SACD series by Analogue Productions are produced using close mic techniques, rendering the soundstage non-existent. The individual instruments sound wonderful, but they are either placed in one speaker or the other, with some mixed between left/right.

Without the soundstage, you lose some realistic qualities found in some of the later recordings. Not really a complaint, just an observation.

Just won Billie Holiday - Lady in Satin SACD - The MCH version.
Also picked up The Moody Blues - Every Good Boy Deserves Favour - SACD/MCH

This seems to be a problem with MCH, although, like you write it is an inevitable outcome of MCH, especially in 5.1 audio on either BR, DVD-A's, or SACD's. It is one thing to sit in what is an audio bubble that is an MCH mix and another to listen to the same mix then made into an audience mix where that mix has less soundstage width than lots of stereo CD's. The MCH mix by its nature can never be what anyone who is playing would ever hear, much less any audience, but it certainly is crystal clear and renders a home theater surround system into a pair of headphones in multi-channel playback if recorded and mixed into discrete 5.1 and it is interesting to listen to.

WOW That's a great price, and it only took you one shot to take most of these. I've spent years putting my set together, I just finished the other day..You need just three more, it's great music very evolving tunes, and some times creepy, but in a good way..If you like Depeche Mode, or Joy Division you'll love these two band members.

Let us know whay you think.

Thanks Dan. You're DCD catalogue inspired me...I have some of the redbooks/downloads, just wanted to upgrade when I saw the regular retail prices on these. Get 'um while you can.

Just won the Ray Brown Trio - Soular Energy on e-bay. Thanks for the recommendation all.

Well, out of this grouping, I like the Lee Morgan and Ike Quebec discs the best...but...not in the absolute "must have" category. Still very good.

The must have of the week is the Carey Bell - Harpslinger. Hard hitting tight drums, lifelike guitar work and I thought Carey was sitting on my loveseat next to me playing the harmonica. Great songs, surrounds bring the music into the room/speakers disappear. Really enjoyed this one and still a real bargain in the <$20 category. If you like the Junior Wells - Come On In This House, you should like this one as well.

Listening to Patricia Barber - Verse now (just arrived). Not sure there's a better 2 Ch recording out there. Glad I finally got this one, just sorry I waited this long. Music Direct still had some new copies @ $59 each. It's high, but not e-bay/amazon high, so be sure you like PB first. Bill mentioned this may be his favorite of the PB series, can't argue the point...it's special.

P.S. You may not think of PB to check out the low end of your system/check for rattles, but track 6/7 will expose issues if you have them. I have some rattles in the fan/AC vents I need to work on. Yes you can crank this UP.

I've got PB's complete collection and was "lucky" enough to buy all of the MFSL SACD's when they sold for $30 back then. IMO Modern cool is probably the best sounding of the MFSL but all of them are indeed extraordinary. I'll be visiting the Montreal AV show this Friday and bringing the MC CD with me to reference some headphones/amps. Those SACD's did help tame some vibrations in the room I didn't even know I had

Great to hear Martin Like I said just three more to go, it will be an inclined run, but your library will "Look Marvelous", ala Billy SNL skit...

Nice buy, I've been looking for that one too, highly sought for let us know what you think about it..

At the moment I'm speaker-less, just packed my center channel and off to the nearest Fedex kiosk, hopefully this absent of speakers will slow down the buys Some how I highly doubt it..

Martin,

I'm glad you are enjoying Verse. As you mention $60 is steep but not ebay/Amazon steep. I might be wrong but I have a feeling the entire PB SACD catalog will be rereleased in the future. I think that MOFI will see that there is a demand for these SACDs and will release them if they can get the license to do so.

You will enjoy this one for sure. Keep an eye out for the The Red Hot Ray Brown Trio as this is another excellent Gene Harris performance. Of course it is a Ray Brown Trio title but Gene steals the show IMO. Great stuff.

Amazon $10 gift card for $5 on 3/19/12. I just saw this on a Boston news channel and picked one up. I was hoping I could buy $100 worth but the limit is one card per household. Still worth it to save $5 on my next SACD purchase.

Must be nationwide because had the same offer in Los Angeles, CA.

"The Gene Harris Trio Plus One" very nice! Love the swing rhythm. Nice sax
Nnenna Freelon "Shaking Free" great voice, didn't care much for the material she was doing.
Monty Alexander "Calypso Blues" The songs of Nat King Cole-not feeling it yet, I'll have to give this another try later.

Regarding the last title "Calypso Blues", I gave this another listen today, and I must say I'm glad I did because it is delightful.

It's strange that after listening to the Nnenna Freelon, I just couldn't get into the Alexander piece, I must have been in an audio "hangover" mode. I have certainly noticed before that music moods change, sometimes an album will be brilliant, sometimes it just doesn't tickle my fancy at the moment.

Just purchased Doug Macleod - "Whose Truth Whose Lies" and Cameron Carpenter - "Revolutionary". I thought Revolutionary was gone for good but some new ones popped up on Amazon. The Cameron Carpenter recording is the one where they used 2 Thigpen Rotary woofers to reproduce the sound of a 128 foot organ stop (4hz). The whole disc is not full of bass but there are parts that go down to 4 and 8 hz. Looking forward to giving this a try on my infinite baffle sub.

Picked up some used Police SACDs - $15 ea.

The Police: Zenyatta Mondatta
The Police: Ghost In The Machine

Just re-released in a hybrid...and purchased:

The Police - Outlandos D'Amour (universal Eu)...import cds has it new for $24.57 thru e-bay w/free shipping.

Zenyatta Mondatta will also be released on the 30th. Not sure if it's simply a re-release of the 2003 masterings or if new... but it states: "Import hybrid-SACD pressing. Features DSD remastering. Digitally remastered edition of the 1978 debut album from the British trio."

Fortunately it wasn't quite that bad.
The "Talk Talk" SACD was the only one that passed the Hundred dollar mark.
Most of them I scored very good prices on and consider myself lucky.
Still kicking myself for passing up on the "Patricia Barber - Cafe Blue" SACD which sold for $99.00
