Being a big fan of Ray Brown I threw a bid on this title on ebay. I won the bid at a very good price which surprised me. You never know on ebay as I have won some bids at very good prices. The one that surprised me the most was Beck's Sea Change SACD at $44 shipped eek.gif.

Buying on eBay is like following the stock market.
Some days a particular disc will sell for a VERY good price and the next time it comes around it may sell for a small fortune.
The good thing is there will almost always be another chance to bid on a particular title if it sells for to much.
Have picked up quite a few titles that completely surprised me at how little they sold for. Have seen others that I bid on sell for just insane prices.
There seems to be no particular rhyme or reason for this other than luck of the draw. smile.gif

Hey Steve I received my Dido I'm no Angle in Faux 5.1, I'll give it a C- for trying as it's a bit all over the place at times, and lots of distortion, and annoying levels at the rears, and with distortion. To be fair, I didn't sit down to listen to it straight through, but what I did hear while sitting down in the sweet spot was a horrid at most times.

Hope you had better luck with yours, and your Led Zeppelin was more subtle at the rears, where he was a little head handed in my opinion.

Cheers

The theme from Shaft is a classic, enjoy.

I picked up the three latest Ray Charles releases from A.P.

Ray Charles and Betty Carter: More of a jazz session than R&B, but touches both. This title was treated the same as the Nat Cole releases, with an option for a 3-ch presentation having vocals only in the center channel. I dislike that presentation as much as I did previously, and the stereo tracks are by far my favorite. Surprisingly good AQ, this is another old Concord master with very nice low end.

Ray Charles Live In Concert: Another Concord master, this is easily the best live recording of it's era. (1964) A real treat, and a trip down memory lane for anyone old enough and lucky enough to have seen Ray live. Stereo presentation is very effective, AQ is way better than any previous release. The "Makin' Woopie" track alone is worth the price of admission.

Ray Charles - Genius + Soul = Jazz: This release is from sessions with 2 variations of the Basie big band, arranged by Quincy Jones. I'd also call this more of a jazz session than R&B. Ray is playing the organ. Incredible band, and a treat for any fan of the big band sound.

Dan-I meant to send you a "heads up" PM and totally spaced-sorry. It probably would've saved you some aggravation. I mentioned my Zeppelin 5.1 DTS CD in the 4311 thread but yes, the levels are all over the place.

Sitting in the MLP the first thing I noticed was that the left surround was absolutely blaring and I couldn't hear either main, so I started making tweaks. The bass was fairly hot as well but from the 4311 manual I remembered that DTS-CDs require a 10dB bass reduction so doing that helped, and after 15-20 minutes of adjusting speaker trims, EQ settings, etc., I got it sounding decent. If you're in a patient mood maybe give these things a try and see if it helps.

I'll give mine another shot and determine whether or not it's worth all the effort, but my early impression is that it's definitely not something Steven Wilson would be proud of frown.gif .

rd,

The theme from Shaft is on the Super Bass2 SACD? I just looked at the track listing for Super Bass2 and I do not see it listed.

Not a problem smile.gif. For some reason I thought maybe the theme for Shaft had a different title wink.gif.

Thanks Steve for your thoughts on your findings, I'll def give it another try. I can't knock the guy for trying, and taking such a brave stand on 5.1 tunes, but it isn't easy as both know.

Dan,

I listened to the Modern Cool BR this morning. You are in for a big treat smile.gif! The one feature I like abut this audio only BR is you can change from 2CH to 5.1 on the fly and the track playing does not restart. When switching from 2CH to MCH (SACD) using the Audio button on the 83SE's remote the track playing restarts from the beginning.

You could do a search on sa-cd.net to find out.

Edit:

Hold the press folks ... eek.gif

Just heard it, and you're so right Bill. This one is definitely reference quality, it was great to get the bad taste out my mouth from the pseudo dts 5.1 Dido ebay purchase!

So glad to hear that The Modern Cool blu-ray is great sounding!!
Can't wait to hear it for myself but will have to wait another couple of weeks until I return home.
Hope to keep hearing more rave reviews about this title from our members.

Dan,

I'm glad that you enjoyed the Modern Cool BR smile.gif. I really hope that the word gets out about this BR. With that hopefully there will be more PB blurays and that this format (audio only) will catch on. With there only being two SACD plants (Japan and Austria) in the world bluray might be the future for Hi-Rez audio (fingers crossed smile.gif). If you look at the liners notes from Jim Anderson the 5.1 mix for Modern Cool was done at the Skywalker Ranch in CA. Not a bad place to do a 5.1 mix wink.gif.

I listened to the Modern Cool Bluray last night. It blew me away. A very high quality recording for sure. I had never heard her before but was very impressed. I'd define her style of jazz to be a little on the edgy side, which I really liked. I went to her web site and noted she plays at a cluib in Chicago alot on Monday nights when she's not out on the road. I plan to be in that area in the fall and may have to give it a whirl. You can buy live recordings from that club in flac from her website. (no mention of resolution, so I'm assuming 44.1/16 at best.)

Went back to her website and used the email contact feature complimenting them on the bluray release and suggesting that more be in the making!! I strongly urge other AVSers to do the same!!

My copy should be here any day now, I'm really looking forward to the 5.1 mix. This is an awesome set even on my MoFi stereo SACD! I'm also hoping they release some of her other titles on Blu in multi ch.

Hey Jay you being a PB fan, and actually letting me know that the her catalogue on SACD weren't in 5.1 I am eager to hear your thoughts on this one smile.gif

I've been in a "listen more/buy less" mode lately, but I jumped on Stan Getz Quartet: Pure Getz at a decent price. The reviews are overwhelmingly positive so I'm anxious to fire it up.

Hey Steve,

I've been on a buy more and listen more mode lately wink.gif. Although I think I should slow down the buying for a little while. You are going to enjoy the Pure Getz SACD as it is an excellent sounding disc with some great music.

Hey Dan,

I will keep my eyes open for you for the Pure Getz SACD. I'm glad you and Steve are loving the new Ascend Towers smile.gif. I gotta hear these speakers some day. It is amazing how ones listening tastes change after making speaker upgrades. I used to be 70% HT and 30% music. But now the ratio is about 85% music and 15% HT.

Thanks, Bill-I was going to PM you about it but I thought it would be gone very quickly since the price was fairly low. I just listened to the entire album on MOG and I enjoyed it, even though it was 2-channel through my computer speakers. I'm sure it will sound excellent at home in MCH.

Thanks bubby, I'll be doing some WTB ad over SH site as well wink.gif

I just cut off my Block Buster subscription, as we weren't getting to see the rented movies at weeks at a time it was becoming silly hanging on to these flicks, and not watching them. But there's always time for music listening though. biggrin.gif
