Another steller AK recording is Paper Airplane from HDTracks...it's a Grammy winner along the lines of best recording or engineering. I've listened to this CD a bit more than any of her other stuff. Solid all the way if you're a fan.

This is the Raising Sand CD I have- inexpensive, easily available, and it sounds great, as I mentioned. It requires no remaster unless of course that resulted in a nice HiRes MC rendition and I have no reason to expect that. No sense in waiting, I'm enjoying it now.

The Paper Airplane CD is also readily available, inexpensive (especially used) and sounds fab. I'd welcome a HiRes version but again, no sense in waiting.

Got a copy of the new A.P. release of "Time Out"

I did an A-B comparison of this release to the original Columbia SACD release, playing each in separate Oppos.
The new release wins, with better dynamic range being the main plus. Lower levels on this release make a really definitive comparison difficult, but over-all it does sound a tad cleaner. Worth a double-dip for fans of this album.

I still prefer the stereo tracks to the 5.0 tracks, although either sounds excellent. Both releases seem to treat the 5.0 mix about the same with the back channels being used for reverb and the front stage spread across all 3 channels.

Time Out will be on my to-buy list; thanks for the heads-up. Picked up Return To Forever Live at Montreux Blu-Ray, and it looks and sounds (DTS-HD MA 5.1 (24bit/48kHz)) fantastic! Stanley Clarke's bass playing takes my breath away, as do the other fine musicians in the group. I would love to have Zappa Plays Zappa be given the similar BR treatment. Are you listening Dweezil?

Also added R.E.M's Green, Monster, and Out Of Time CD/DVD-A releases to my existing stand-alone Automatic For The People DVD-A that I had picked up some years ago. Elliot Sheiner's 5.1 mixes are impeccable and the audio is fabulous. My favorite is OOT which matches the brilliance of AFTP. I wonder if any of the other R.E.M. CD/DVD-A releases are worth picking up?

+1 on the RTF in Montreux blu-ray. Most of the "Live in Montreux" series of BD releases are similarly excellent on all respects. Search Amazon for "montreux blu-ray" to see a list. I also have "B.B. King" which is great, and just pre-ordered Etta James.

If you're a Stanley Clarke fan, THIS DVD is a must-have.

Hey Steve,

I'm afraid you might be right wink.gif. I have been fairly selective as of late buying ones off of my wish list when the prices are low. But I can't compete with caupina as he is the "discount" SACD king biggrin.gif. If I ever get out to L.A. I'll have to hook up with him and hit all his secret spots. I hope all is well in sunny L.A. smile.gif.

Hey-nothing wrong with buying discs you enjoy especially when the prices are low. As far as buying locally here in L.A. I'm not sure Caupina would want to reveal his "sources." smile.gif

True although my biggest problem is finding time to listen to all the great music I have bought. Maybe in the fall as I don't like being inside when the weather is so nice. Maybe caupina will make an exception. I'll even wear a blindfold so I don't know where I'm going wink.gif.

Come on Bill and Steve, I'd definitely let you both into my "secret place" of cheaps SACD, let's get together some time and I'll take you there, you're more than welcome. You just have to know where to look for and be patient, very patient wink.gif. Just today I saw Peter Gabriel's "So", Aerosmith "Oh Yeah", Dave Brubeck's "Time Out" among other titles. They were not cheap, around 35 to 65 bucks depending on the SACD. Not my cup of tea on the PG and Aerosmith ones and "Time Out" I have it already, that's why I just left them there, and they have been in the same place for a very long time eek.gif
Cheers, Cesar

Cesar,

Thank you for the offer smile.gif! I will some day hopefully take you up on it. I can see it now a trip to sunny L.A. and the highlight of my trip will be bargain SACD shopping with you and Steve biggrin.gif. The heck with all the sightseeing lets hit those "secret" SACD shops!

I noticed Dianna Krall has a new album coming out in Oct. I haven't seen it as a preorder on any of the usual suspects sites. HD tracks is offering a single of a cut from the new album.

Just got three new ones:
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - Damn the Torpedoes (Blu-ray audio)
Blue Man Group - dvd-a
Eric Clapton - Slowhand (SACD)

Listening to DTT brings back memories... love the sound. I need to research it, though, as Petty's vocals sound somewhat "echo-e" to me, as if it was recorded in an extremely live room, not a dead studio.

If the Blue Man Group is "The Complex" you've got yourself a winner. Fantastic surround sound disc.

Also this Blue Man Group DVD-A http://www.amazon.com/Blue-Man-Group-Audio/dp/B000051S65/ref=sr_1_cc_2?s=aps&ie=UTF8&qid=1343417647&sr=1-2-catcorr&keywords=blue+man+group+audio has truly excellent surround sound quality along with demo quality bass. It's been one of my favorites for sound for several years. There is no real video it is only audio. Excellent value for less than $12.
I've always wished that the Blue Man Group DVD with Venus Hum was available in hi-res. Performence-wise, I prefer that title over The Complex.
Actually, I have both of the mentioned Blue Man Group dvd-a's. The most recent purchase is Audio. I already had The Complex.

Both are great discs. If you ever have the chance to see them live, do it! They came to MT last year and the whole family enjoyed the performance.

re: "Just A Little Lovin'" by Shelby Lynne which has just come out on SACD. I recently got the CD new for under $6 new and it is simply superb. Great (minimalist, lots of space-between-the-notes) production/arrangements by Phil Ramone. The vocal and musical talent are exc and SQ is exc. The fellow I bought my new Dali speakers from just got the SACD and he says there's little-to-no audible difference vs the CD on his top-end system. If someone else here confirms this, I'll skip the SACD and be satisfied with the CD, which is an incredible value.

Bill Mac, this album is right up your alley!

SoM,

I have had my eye on this title for awhile. importcds finally got the SACD in stock and I'm tempted to grab it. But your thoughts on the RBCD have me wondering if it might be the better choice. Here is a thread from the SH forum that discusses the Just a Little Lovin SACD. If you go to the last page there is some discussion about the differences between the SACD and the RBCD.

Just a heads up for you collectors out there like me. I just bought a 2nd backup copy of Foo Fighter's awesome dualdisc "In Your Honor" through fleabay for around $18 shipped to the US. It's legit as I just received my copy in mint condition.
