What are your most recent Hi-Res purchases? - Page 214

Could be lossless on TAAB 2, but that's not TAAB, the original remixed. I am always suspicious. I'd bet the farm that they remixed in the highest quality possible, yet went lossy on the release. Makes me suspect that they will double- (triple-?) dip and release lossless down the road.

Just amended my post..........You are right. Only 5.1 DD and DTS, 24/96 stereo on TAAB. Reviews are not so good, no lossless 5.1, and QC issues....ugh.

Acoustic Sounds is having an SACD blowout sale (their words, not mine). Some are available at 5$. I scored a good stack of classical music from them during an earlier such sale (averaged about 7$/disc with shipping). Just a thought.

If anyone is interested, I just got the ELP DVD-A's (Tarkus and self titled). The DVD-A is disc 3 and both contain separate MLP layers in MCH and Stereo and both are 24/48K -- There is no higher resolution. I listened to the self titled disc last night and it sounds good - nice use of the the surround speakers. To me, bits are more important than sample frequency but a 24/96 mch and 24/192 stereo like most other DVD-A's would have made sense if they were going to all the trouble - not sure why they limited to 48K. Small nit to pick though - it does sound good. And at the price paid, an excellent bargain.

I have to wonder what, if any, improvement there is in MLP (Meridian Lossless Packing) from 48KHz sampling rate to a higher one? Plus, there is a lot of research "out there" that explains why higher sampling rates do not improve originally analog content.

I have ELP on order and was just listening to Tarkus. That is on my PC 5.1 system, and I have yet to fire up the main system with it, but it sounds great so far.

Maybe Mr. Wilson has determined there is little to no difference. It makes sense commercially since the file size is much smaller (mixing time, saving time, download time, disc space, storage space, etc..) but there are a slew of existing DVD-A's out there and downloads with the "standard" of 24/96 for mch and 24/192 for stereo. This all could be fruit for a new thread. I have the Beatles catalog that I bought a few years ago that came out on USB and those are all 24/44.1 -- They sound pretty good but I prefer the vinyl (Parlophone). I have not compared the recent BluRays of some of the Beatles in DTS HD MA yet.

I am not a huge ELP fan but the songs I do like, I like a lot (Lucky Man). Kind of like the Moody Blues - I like some but have trouble listening to an entire album side. I'll probably rip a few songs from these discs and add them to my server for streaming.

There are some "workarounds" for that.

Yes...moving and recommended. When listening to classical music, I can at times get board with the material...not with this one. Give it a spin...surrounds used judiciously for good balance.

Have this recorded off directv. How is the BLU-ray?

Just ordered it yesterday - will let you know next week. I buy these BR's primarily for the DTS HD MA soundtracks. I bought Tom Petty's Damn The Torpedoes BR a couple of years ago and have been hooked on the sound quality of DTS HD MA ever since.

Just wish I could figure out a way to get them to flac for streaming............. I am still trippin' the shiny disc fantastic for BR. If anyone has any ideas, please PM me.

I received, but haven't had time to listen yet, ELP / ELP. I expect that that this title will provide a perfect opportunity to demonstrate the advantage of remixing an old analog title. It contains the original stereo mixes on CD, NEW 2102 stereo REMIXES on CD and those same stereo mixes on DVD-Audio. The only variation missing is the original stereo mixes (simply) remastered. But I think the first two I mentioned above will be very revealing. Headed to buy Tarkus as well. That's a one year newer recording and I am interested in hearing if there is any improvement because of that.

I think you'll like it Jeff. I've only listened to the surround mixes a couple times through, but so far I'm enjoying Steve Wilson's take on the surround.

I purchased the HD tracks 24/96 download of Vince Guarardi's holiday jazz album. (Charlie Brown Music) It's quite good. I've never listened to all those tunes all the way through.
