I plan to spin Pvt. Brubeck Remembers later tonight (a wonderful solo effort on SACD). A sad day, but, unlike far too many gifted musicians (across all genres), he lived a full and productive life. Truly among the greats who tickled the ivories.

Two new SACD were dropped at my door today:

Dire Straits - Making Movies (Universal Records (Japan) CMEJ 9520 SA)
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here (Analogue Productions (CAPP 33453 SA)

I listened casually to Making Movies while I was working in the other room and passed through the listening area a few times. Sounds clean, but nothing overwhelming on first listen (unlike Love Over Gold). I'll give it a good night time listen and see what I think. Still a good addition to my collection.

Just started listening to the Floyd album and I was blown away from the beginning. This is one of the best surround treatments so far in my modest collection. The tympani drum during Welcome to the Machine will make you smile biggrin.gif

The words Perfect and Music rarely go together. What flaws are you referring to? I can't wait to listen to the entire thing beginning to end later tonight.

Agreed, Dan--it has its flaws but is a must have for PF fans. Welcome to the Machine alone is worth the price of admission.

Just now reading up on what some of the purists are saying about the 5.1 mix of Wish You Were Here. I guess I'm not a purist looking for a discrete 4 or 5 channel mix. I just want something that magically fills my room, has clarity, and good dynamic range. This SACD certainly fills the bill for me.

Hey Steve

Sorry didn't mean to sound negative about WYWH, and take away from your enjoyment, it's a wonderful sounding disc...Some of us just feel it's not reference quality compare to some other disc recorded earlier than WYWH.

I'm incredibly happy it's my collection, and love playing it LOUD when my girls are out the house biggrin.gif

Enjoy and pay no attention to us Barretts wink.gif

I enjoy the mix, but to me WYWH just doesn't have the jaw-dropping clarity of discs like Sea Change and Avalon. Obviously it's a much older recording and since it's one of my all-time favorites maybe I was expecting too much. Either way it's a very good disc and I'll probably throw it in tonight after Brubeck.

Very true, I can't call myself the biggest PF fan, but respect and enjoy every thing they've done, as a music fan my collection would have been lacking without some Floyd.

Btw the package is in the mail cool.gif

I'll sell you mine at a "buddy price" of $400 biggrin.gif. In all seriousness if you're patient you should be able to find it for quite a bit less.

Now you're just being a bully wink.gif. I'll be searching eBay and other places for this. I could pick it up for $150 tonight in a couple of places, but with Christmas coming I'm trying to be more outwardly focused.

From Steven Wilson Twitter..."Storm Corrosion has received a Grammy nomination for best surround album, my fourth nomination in 5 years - maybe this time?!" I had no idea there was such a category.

Would love to see him get this one. Well deserved even though I've not personally listened to this album. May have to soon!

Went to Amazon...very curious to find a couple of vendors who listed the Special Edition for < $9, while most others had it for around $18. I took a chance on the cheaper vendor out of PA and we'll see what I get. Funny thing is he had the standard CD for slightly higher!

Steve,

My thoughts exactly. I enjoy the WYWH SACD very much but when I play SACDs like Avalon and Sea Change the SQ of WYWH is lacking a bit. In all honesty I prefer the SQ of the DSOTM SACD to that of WYWH. The other thing I find with WYWH is that I really need to crank the volume to really get the whole effect. I do not find it the same for DSOTM.

On a side note it was sad to hear that Dave Brubeck had passed away frown.gif. When I have the chance I'll have to play the Time Out and Concord on a Summer Night SACDs.

Well thanks to the forum I'm going to get audition Avalon until such time as I can find a copy at a reasonable price. Also getting a listen to Sea Change. I'm sure it's only a matter of time before I purchase both.

What is THE version of DSOTM I should be looking for?

Yes, from what I see it looks like the Special Edition is a 2-disc set (one a BR) for less then $10 eek.gif . I've only heard a little of Storm Corrosion and it's quite different than what I expected. I may grab the special edition and see if it grows on me. I really enjoy the Steven Wilson solo stuff.

Well it has been awhile but I bought a few SACDs today. I had to check with my sponsor at SACDBA (SACD Buyers Anonymous) before hitting the BUY button wink.gif.

Kenny Burrell - Midnight Blue SACD
John Coltrane - Blue Train (APO version) SACD
Shelby Lynne - Just A Little Lovin' SACD
Jimmy D. Lane: It's Time SACD
Doug MacLeod: Unmarked Road SACD (forgot about this one redface.gif)

Would love a review on Blue Train when you get it. I have a couple of redbook versions of that classic.

Steve,

I'm sure you will enjoy your Avalon demo very much smile.gif. You might want to keep an eye out for Bryan Ferry's Boys and Girls SACD as that one is just as good as Avalon IMO. Just grab the DSOTM Hybrid SACD at importcds for $12.03 plus shipping.

I'll post my thoughts when it arrives and I have a chance to listen to it. I also have the Blue Note SACD of Blue Train but the APO version is supposed to be the definitive digital version. Its amazing that the Blue Note version was going for about $12 new awhile back but the price has jumped up. By the way all the APO SACDs I just bought were from importcds as well. Blue Train and Midnight Blue were both under $20 each plus shipping.

The WYWH SACD 5.1 mix on "Welcome to the Machine" is excellent IMO, but I too was disappointed with the release. I remember reading somewhere that James Guthrie's removal of tape hiss on the original analog multitracks resulted in a loss of some high frequency extension in the sound. Richard Wright's synth pads which begin very softly and build @ the beginning of "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" is where I think it's most noticeable. Can't remember where I read this and/or post a link, so a big FWIW on this...
