What are your most recent Hi-Res purchases? - Page 218

Hey guys, it's been a while. I haven't bought anything for some time, I guess the excitement of browsing around the music stores faded away a bit.Today my wife talked me into going to get some Christmas CDs so I obliged biggrin.gif, I found Norah Jones "Come Away with Me" SACD for just 7.99, sealed (it's the Analogue Productions issue so it was kind of odd to be this cheap). I bought it just to compare it to the older SACD. I also found Deep Forest "Comparsa" SACD for 12.99, used. I already got this SACD so if anybody wants to trade, PM me (by the way I still have the "Pure Getz" SACD if anybody is interested).Last but not least I bought Brian Bromberg "Jaco" DVD-A, just 9.99, sealed. I'm not familiar with this bass player but it has good reviews and the price was good.

this was in BOLD...I was comparing the Bluray vs. the DVDA (web), Same mix (Quad) the bluray is cleaner.

OK, the Blu-ray is lossless as well. If it's the same mix, then all lossless versions of it should sound the same.

Old fan of RLJ. How does it sound?

I'll let you know as soon as I listen to it. I'm not familiar with RLJ either so I don't have any expectations.

Cesar,

Actually you have one more than I do but I spent at least twice as much for my SACD collection as you did wink.gif. I have really slowed down on buying music as it was getting way out of control redface.gif. I have enough great music at this time to be happy for quite awhile. Talk to Steve to see if there are any SACDBA meetings near you guys biggrin.gif.

I've said the same thing in the past as my Paypal account goes up in flames wink.gif. As you know there is a river named after that mindset and its not in the "Amazon" biggrin.gif.

Jeff,

You aren't the only one smile.gif. I think I'll borrow your catch phrase in the future if you don't mind.

Since the L.A. group is geared more towards HT than SACD they're considerably more damaging to your wallet. As part of the initiation I had to buy a JVC projector and 2nd subwoofer eek.gifbiggrin.gif.

Now thats the spirit wink.gif. Blame the L.A. group for all future HT/music purchases, I know I would biggrin.gif.

Supposedly a 5.1 mix of "The Wall" is coming in 2013, has anybody heard any more about this? Thx!

I would rate the Floyd mixes like this:

1.) Quad mix of DSOTM on Bluray.
2.) Quad mix WYWH Bluray
3.) 5.1 mix DSOTM Bluray or SACD (same mix)
4.) 5.1 mix WYWH Bluray or SACD (same mix)

The Wall would be nice if uncompressed!

Here are 55 Christmas-related SACDs:

http://www.sa-cd.net/search/christmas

I was going to recommend the Three Tenors Christmas SACD as I own it and like it a lot, but that thing has greatly shot up in price since I acquired it. Johnny Mathis' The Christmas Album SACD is pretty decent and does have a surround mix.

To stay on topic, I recently picked up Dylan and the Band's "The Basement Tapes" SACD. It's a winner and narrowly edges out the Sony remaster from a couple of years ago. The album is never going to sound perfect, but I feel closer to the master recording than ever before with the SACD. I would say the MFSL SACD has a more conservative mastering than the Sony CD remaster. The Sony CD is mastered to be as clinical as possible, while the SACD is more restrained with a focus on analog warmth.

Scirica, I gave it a listen this morning and even though it's not exactly my type of music, the SQ is very good, I enjoyed it very much, I would certainly recommend it smile.gif

Ok, now I'm confused. redface.gif

I thought the context was the 5.1 mixes on Blu-ray compared to the same mixes on SACD? Of course I wouldn't compare the sound quality of Parsons' quad mix to the 5.1 Guthrie.

Beyond that, are there quad mixes on Blu-ray???

Yesterday I received Robert Cray "Time will Tell" DVD-Audio. Haven't had time to listen yet as I have been wrestling with a computer whose SSD "disappeared" ... without idiot me having an image of the drive.

I listened to the self titled disc last night and it sounds good - nice use of the the surround speakers. To me, bits are more important than sample frequency but a 24/96 mch and 24/192 stereo like most other DVD-A's would have made sense if they were going to all the trouble - not sure why they limited to 48K. Small nit to pick though - it does sound good. And at the price paid, an excellent bargain.[/quot

Thats a good disc. Mr Wilson did the transfer without any tweaking. He did no eq work just straigh transfer from the master tapes.
I have Tarkus, and BSS. BSS sounds so much better with more OOMPH. Also He is working on anew project, and all we know is it's a band from the 70's. Speculation is rampant on what album he is doing. But it remains a secret.

Heads up-both WYWH and DSOTM are on ebay seperate and dirt cheap!

Did you happen to compare the SOUND QUALITY of the original stereo mix (on CD) to the remixed stereo (on CD) to the remixed stereo on DVD-A?

Jeff, the Alan Parsons quad mixes of DSOTM & WYWH were widely bootlegged for years, but AFAIK the Immersion Box Sets of these two albums included BOTH the Guthrie 5.1 mixes and the Parsons 4.0 mixes. The 5.1 mixes are on the Bluray discs in these box sets, but the 4.0 mixes are not on the Blurays....according to Amazon product description the 4.0 mixes are on DVD with 2 levels of resolution...448 kbps and 640 kbps...so it sounds like an "audio only" DVD-V to me, NOT DVD-A in the official box set releases.

I knew about the Parsons quad DSOTM - got it right around the time it, ummm ... became available. I did not know there was a Parsons quad of WYWH.

In line with my theory about modern day remixes, I would surmise that the sound quality of the new 5.1 mixes outshine the much older 4.0 mixes.

EDIT: the WYWH Quad Mix IS ON THE BLURAY DISC in the Immersion Box Set...it was NOT done by Alan Parsons. Amazon's product description for the Bluray does not indicate the Quad being included on the Bluray with the 5.1, this is an incomplete listing...sorry for getting this wrong...

Jeff,
Amazon has quad mix listed as part of the WYWH Immersion Box Set but upon closer reading DOES NOT mention that it was done by Alan Parsons....the DSOTM listing on Amazon DOES mention Alan Parsons...clear as mud, right? So I may be wrong and/or of course Amazon could have it wrong...under product description it says "previously released only on vinyl LP/8-track tape Wish You Were Here Quad Mix."
