Patricia Barber - Nightclub MSFL SACD

Yes it is a bit harsh wink.gif. I offered to put my house up as the bet but Steve said I had to "man up" and bet like a "real" man biggrin.gif.

I'll forward the SACDBA information packet but if you're like me it probably won't take wink.gif. Nice discs you got there smile.gif! I have been looking at The Well SACD but I'll get buy with the Gold CD.

Will need a review on that one for sure!

You funny guys are putting a lot of pressure on us non-funny guys to post humorous retorts. Sort of reminds me of what Ray Romano said about playing golf on TV in pro-ams.........."Golf is hard enough by itself but it's much harder for me since I gotta play golf and think of a joke too".

Keep it up though, keeps an otherwise dry thread upbeat so I like it.smile.gif

It's all Bill's fault...he started it!

I'm neither a reviewer nor an audiophile but will be happy to let you know my impressions after having a chance to listen to it. I won't really get the chance to truly "listen" to it until tomorrow evening when I have the house to myself for a couple of hours and get the chance to adjust the volume to what I consider reasonable (ie LOUD).

Pre-release Yes - Close to the Edge Audio Fidelity Gold SACD Mastered by Steve Hoffman!

Disappointing that it is not remixed to 5.1.

Yes, that would have been nice. I never had this on CD, only an old vinyl. It will be nice to hear it again, even in stereo.

In looking into this one, I see Universal did a 15 album dump of remastered CD's in three "sectors" (groups of albums), but each sector includes one REMIXED 5.1 album in 96 kHz/24-bit MLP (DVD-Audio). "Farewell To Kings", "Signals" and "Fly By Night" are the three remixed, surround albums ... anybody have/hear them??

I've been considering getting them, but would only want the MCH releases. Sadly, I doubt they'll get an individual release, so I guess I'll have to bite the bullet (or cross my fingers for individual BD releases like that for 2112).

Then this will be a great upgrade! I had the vinyl, the CD and saw the tour.

Yes, that's another complaint of mine - that they "bundle."

I saw them 3 times on the Close to the Edge tour, on both North American legs. I was/am a HUGE yes fan! Just didn't make the transition to shiny discs with a lot of my rock bands; kind of had a brain fart and shifted to jazz for a period.

I was a little irritated by this marketing decision and passed on the giant bundles. Moving Pictures was a standalone release and a nice sounding disc.

The real kicker is after they've gotten the rabid fans' money, they unbundle and rake in the non-rabid fans' - or the patient fans' - money. Plus I've seen some "unbundled" items showing up on eBay.

Wasn't there a giant QC issue with one of these releases?

I seem to remember a reissue due to a track that wasn't to be on. It's unidentifiable as to who's playing and singing. SW said he just remixed what was on the tapes ...

I forget what album it was ... but it was discussed here maybe a week or so ago.

It was Tarkus and here is some chatter on SA-CD.net about the "Unknown Ballad."

I remember hearing about this, but I was referring to flaws with one or more of the Rush boxset releases.

It's briefly mentioned here. I remember being on the fence about these remasters and after hearing of some of these issues I decided to pass. Not enough hirez in the boxsets.

Christmas Spree:
EL&P - EL&P
Tarkus - EL&P
Celebration Day BD - Led Zeppelin (I'm guessing this is better then the bootleg I have)
GRRR! BD - The Rolling Stones (I have all the ABKCO SACDs but it will be nice to have some newer songs in hi-res)
Thick as a Brick - Jethro Tull
Damn the Torpedoes BD - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers (Thought I already had this but I'll be damn if I can find it, $15 Ebay reorder)
Larks' Tongues In Aspic - 40th Anniversary Edition - King Crimson (Unfortunately Amazon shipped me the two CD version, I'll try Burning Shed this time)

I recently broke down and bought the Rush Sector 3 box set ("bundle") and Signals in 5.1 sounds pretty good but certainly not a Steven Wilson quality surround mix. Earlier this year I also got Moving Pictures, it is available "unbundled" i.e. as an official standalone release, as holt7153 mentioned. I agree that it's a nice sounding disc, but not stellar. (EDIT: fixed post, sorry Jeff)

My take on the 2112 Blu-ray Audio disk. First the disclaimer I'm neither a reviewer nor a true audiophile, the following just my opinion. The mix is pretty good although I didn't think it was as good as Moving Pictures. One thing I was worried about before listening was the "noise" (that sounds like tape hiss) in the quieter passages present in the Farewell To Kings DVD-A. That concern was gone as soon as the disk started, the quiet passages are just that, quiet. I only have a couple of minor quibbles with the mix. The center channel on my system had to be bumped up 4 db to keep the guitar mixed into that channel from being lost in the mix. The bottom end is not as strong as in my other Rush MC disks (MP BD-A and FTK DVD-A) or most other MC disks I've heard. It's been a long time since I've heard 2112 on vinyl, it may be that the bass is a little light on the master. Those two issues aside it really is an enjoyable listening experience. I tried both the LPCM and DTS-MA tracks and did not notice a discernable difference. The effects in the rear channels are well done and blend well with the fronts. The comic book type video that plays along with the audio is unique and added some enjoyment to the experience.

Indeed, one album in five being redone in hi-rez 5.1 is paltry. I know some feel differently than I, but I favor a hi-rez buyer's strike (boycott) against buying boxed sets like this, and I'd extend the boycott to nearly all of the non-remixed stereo SACDs. And while I'm at it, I would toss in Thick As A Brick in 5.1 DD/DTS (and not lossless). I don't know which is worse, crippling the surround mixes like this, or crippling them like this ... and then releasing it in lossless somewhere down the road.

I couldn't pass on Farewell to Kings as it is my favorite Rush Album (and I got a $50 BB gift card for Christmas last year). Xanadu alone is worth $50 to me. Other than that I just can't justify the expense of the sector sets for one DVD-A. It sounds like Rush plans to release more albums on BD-A, I'll be all over those. I prefer that format anyway, seems to me to be more future proof and supposedly more durable.

How is the Moving Pictures BD-A? I have the DVD-A version and I think it sounds terrible.

Curious as to your source of info here . . .?

There's not going to be significant difference in the sound quality of the DVD-A's MLP "versus" the BD's LPCM and/or DTS-HD MA. I have the Moving Pictures DVD-A and respectfully disagree that it sounds "terrible." Some may take issue with WHERE in the 5.1 soundscape (mix engineer) Richard Chycki placed certain sounds but I think the overall FIDELITY/SQ of the disc is tremendous.
