What are your most recent Hi-Res purchases? - Page 222

I just purchased the new mobile fidelity SACD release of Bob Dylan's Blood on the Tracks. Import CD had the best price.

Made me pull out my copy of the Treasury SACD and play it. It was certainly a pleasure to listen to this. However, I was surprised to hear distortions to the bass coming from my Rythmik FV12 subwoofer for some of the songs. Notably, Northern Sky. Could this be the recording? I tried Remain In Light by Talking Heads DVD-A next and cranked it up, and the bass sounded tight and distortion-free like it always does. Jerry Harrison did a beautiful job with the Talking Heads DVD-A releases.

I don't have a sub at the moment, probably someone else can comment on the distortion bit on this disc.

Thanks

I think so Steve.
No sub on the 4311ci would let the towers shine through right?

Yeah, I would re-run Audyssey and set them to large afterwards, change the XO, etc.

I have all of the Genesis SACD from Nursery Cryme on. Because of the underlying sound quality of recording technology back then, I could not bring myself to purchase the titles before Cryme. Plus that album marked the arrival of Collins and Hackett and formed the bands core until Gabriel left. Clearly, as the years passed and recording technology improved, the SACD titles sound quality improved.

This is all my biases and prejudices; anyone who is a diehard Genesis fan will want their entire catalog as SACD is the highest quality medium that these are likely to appear in. I have yet to critically listen for surround mix quality ....

Isn't there only one SACD before Cryme that being Trespass? I'm too much of a completionist to let one title go unpurchased. biggrin.gif

Full disclosure I only own the Green (1970 - 1975) box SACDs as I'm not much of a post Gabriel fan.

I have the Trick of the Tail SACD which is one of my favorite Genesis albums. I have to say the SQ of the multichannel layer is not very good IMO. The 1970-1975 box set looks like the one to have. It has very good ratings but unfortunately the cost is quite high as I believe it is OOP. If I find the set at a decent price I might grab it but I'm not a huge Genesis fan. Maybe the box set will get rereleased which would be great.

I am a huge Genesis fan, both pre and post Gabriel's departure. Almost like two different bands but I like both. Trick of the Tail was the first Genesis album I bought back in high school but then I quickly worked backwards in the Genesis catalogue to discover the "genesis of Genesis". I've been a die-hard fan ever since and probably saw the band live at least 5 times.

I'm dying to get my hands on the 70-75 set primarily for the Lamb Lies album on SACD but I will wait for the right price. OOP prices are crazy these days!

Diana Krall "Love Scenes" arrived today. MCH sounds great but this is a very small jazz combo. Gives some good live room presence but nothing amazing like Patricia Barber's "Modern Cool".

I'm also waiting for Mr. Postman to deliver the following:

Bryan Ferry - Boys and Girls Arrived today!
Cat Stevens - Tea for the Tillerman Arrived today!
Jennifer Warnes - The Well Arrived today!
Patricia Barber - Nightclub Arrived today!
Peter Gabriel - Shaking the Tree Arrived today!
Peter Gabriel - Up Arrived today!
Yes - Close to the Edge Not yet released
Talking Heads - The Brick Box Set Still waiting!

Self-Santa in high-gear this season. Yay me!

Hmm a bidding war for mine? Naw I'm not selling. biggrin.gif

Also keep in mind the SACDs were only in the UK boxes. The US boxes had plain ole DVD-Video disks not even DVD-A.

Steve,

I agree. PB's Modern Cool Bluray is almost the standard for multichannel female vocal based jazz. I tried to take a look at your SACD list but it is blocked. IIRC you have to go into your user page at sa-cd.net to enable others to view your library.

I have most if not all the Patricia Barber and Krall hi-res releases and you a correct there is no comparison. I've been repeatedly disappointed in the Krall releases and have quit buying them.

I have the PB "Nightclub" on order (MFL SACD-Stereo Only). Your thoughts on that one?

From Genesis To Revelation - Trespass - Nursery Cryme ....

I am a fan of all of their iterations, but hearing Trick for the first time was eery. I did not miss Gabriel one bit, and all of their wonderful harmonies with Peter in the band suddenly made sense.

I found it more economical to purchase the titles individually, however it was two years or so after release that I did that. Still in print, but after release long enough to get some good deals.

I had a very similar reaction to Trick of the Tail. While I did miss Gabriel going forward, they didn't miss a step with Phil's vocals and the core of the band intact. I wore my old Koss Pro4AA headphones out listening to Squonk at concert-level volumes!

I didn't think the first release From Genesis To Revelation on Decca got the SACD treatment, or did it?

I could probably go for the middle period box set but anything from ...And Then There Were Three...on doesn't do anything for me.

Yes, I never missed that they didn't have a bass player as Banks' left foot was pretty nimble, and synth bass can be any frequency..

Now that you mention it, I don't think it did.

Crap, it happened again! Somehow I clicked on a copy of The Who: Tommy on DVD-A on Amazon. How does this keep happening (rhetorical question...I'm just weak).

Been a while since I listened to it. I remember being impressed but maybe not quite as good as Cafe Blue, Modern Cool or the live Companion. I need to break these out again and give a good listen.

I want a new drug. One that don't make me nervous, wondering what to do. One that makes me feel like I don't need SACD, too.
