The only Prime offer I see is $53.44, but there are definitely cheaper options through 3rd party there. And of course I clicked the "Buy now with 1-click" button smile.gif

Update: Looks like I got the only one for $33 and change. Next best is $41.

Dog eat dog in this SACD crack world. The price of Machine Head in MCH just went up.

BTW, my "From Amazon Prime..." was in response to WillyJ's "Amazon selling for $54." You need to look at the other options in small print below the Amazon offering...you can find a bargin in that section sometimes. CAUTION...you may get a regular CD that's mislinked (i.e. Sam Cooke - Portait of a Legend).

I understood that. I was commenting that Prime didn't apply to the "new from other sellers" list. I guess you weren't insinuating that and I misinterpreted. It's all good...$33 plus shipping. Just not as quick as prime. It will be a nice surprise when it shows up.

I try to stay away from those secondary vendors unless they have really good feedback and a lot of it. BTW, USAFCHIEF, did you spend any time with C130's, C-141's or C-5's? I used to put them together years ago when I was an N-Gin-Ear with Lockheed.

"Free" is the right delivery speed for me. If not free, then I make sure to look at the total cost. Too many are fooled by a low selling price and then some nutso number for the shipping ... which they overlook

I've been in 28 years...so all 3. Not as a flyer, but metrology (calibration- PMEL, not weather).

Hey Jeff...really important on those e-bay purchases. The Amazon stuff is pretty standard if I'm not mistaken...$2.98 or free.

"Other sellers" policies vary. But you're right, some eBay sellers are abusive. I have always hoped that eBay would crack down as their fees are based on the selling price, not the total price.

I left in 1979. Was involved with the retooling after the center wing cracks "issue" on the C5A ......... that "issue" is probably lore in the AF metrology labs.smile.gif

I thought $2.98 was reasonable. And the feedback score was very high.

Went ahead and got the used dvda of Machine Head and while I was at it, threw in Jethro Tull's Thick As A Brick (fixed version).........I'm in an oldies kind of mood I guess.

Enjoy...I have the EMI Machine Head SACD 2.0/5.1 Hybrid...I think I'll take it for a spin.

WillyJ, which seller on the Amazon link you posted has the "fixed" version? Been wanting to pull the trigger on this one, but trying to avoid the hassle of having to get a replacement disc from EMI...been following this situation a bit over at the Quadraphonic Quad site. Thanks.

I was going by the feedback on Amazon for the past couple of months - I assumed that what they are selling now is the fixed version. I could be wrong.

Sitting here listening to the Woodstock bluray I bought a week or so ago and googled Alvin Lee (Ten Years After) to see what he has been up to recently and was saddened to learn that he died yesterday..... RIP

Do you know the origin of the band name "Ten Years After?"

According to the Guinness Book Rockopedia, Alvin Lee's idol was Elvis Presley who hit it big in 1956, Ten Years After was formed in 1966.

I had heard it was ten years after Buddy Holly was killed. Your source seems more credible than my memory though.

I have an Ten Years Album in Quadraphonic.. it is pretty cool..

also I Bought ELP-Tarkus yesterday from walmart..

It is pretty fascinating to learn the number of great musicians inspired by Elvis Presley.

Would love to hear "Shhhhh" and "Cricklewood Green" in hires. Those original Deram Vinyl records from the '60's were pretty darn good (like a lot of British recordings from that period).

The most recent issue of Sound+Vision magazine has a pretty lengthy discussion about this album. It looks like there was a quad mix (no sub) on the 2003 SACD release. In the article they are discussing a new 40th Anniversary Deluxe release that will contain a dvda that only contains 3 tracks in 5.1 ....No stated reason for why only 3 tracks except a speculation that the the originals may not have been in good shape. The quad mix is also included in the 5 disc box set. They mention the 2001 dvda contains all tracks in 5.1 and they note the SACD release in 2003 that contains the quad (4.0) mix. There is no mention of the SACD that USAFCHIEF pointed to so perhaps they are not as informed as some on this thread smile.gif or they were released after the article went to press.

EDIT: Looks like the SACD USAFCHIEF points to was released in 2011 so I don't know why S+V failed to mention that release. And as USAFCHIEF stated, it is based on the 2001 dvda release. So the 2003 SACD is the quad release and would be quite different.

Regarding the different MCH mixes on Steven Wilson's "The Raven". I am currently listening to the 96/24 LPCM mix via my Oppo -> Anthem MRX. There is no center channel being used in this mix, at least in my system. Is this intended or is there something wrong with my setup? I get 5.1 with the DTS mix, but Sound+Vision highly recommends the "96.24 LPCM mix".

Edit: Apparently the first track did not use the center channel, but the second does. That's what I get for leaving the living room and listening from my office!

i looked at my machine head disc last nite. it's the 2003 EMI sacd and states on the back that it has the 1972 quadraphonic mix.

That's the one I have and it has both 5.1 and the quad. The 2011 SACD warner Japan release is the same mix as the earlier DVD-A.

I'm home now and looked... EMI hybrid with 3 layers: 2.0, quad from '72, and CD....no 5.1. Sorry for any confusion.

Layer should default to your player settings.

David,

If you go to this post here and look at POST 232, there are a couple of photos. One is the old DVD and one is the new DVD. The new DVD has a solid black line just underneath the text. I just got mine today from Amazon and it has the solid line underneath. Haven't played it yet so I can't confirm anything but it looks like they are now selling the fixed version. It seems to be a well known flaw and good to know they responded fairly quickly. Even if you bought the old one, it looks like they are pretty good about shipping replacement discs right away.

Oh, and I ordered mine directly from Amazon. I have been a prime member for years. Ordered it yesterday and got it today for no extra cost.

Will

EDIT: If anyone wants to know, there is only lossy DTS 5.1 and Dolby Digital 5.1. There is lossless stereo 24/96 of both the original 1972 vinyl and the new stereo remix by Steven Wilson. The 5.1 are also SW remixes. So, no mlp 5.1 layer.

I don't think a lossless re-release of a 1972 mix will be much better than what would have been heard in '72, give or take a toke or two. A new 5.1 mix, even in lossy DTS/Dolby Digital *should* sound better.

Recentle I listened to the original Tarkus stereo CD, the new remixed STEREO CD and same mix on DVD-A. By far, the biggest jump in sound quality was from original stereo CD to new stereo mix CD. On casual listening I couldn't hear any difference between new stereo CD and new stereo DVD-A.
