Got Depeche Mode Ultra and Exiter the other day from amazon.uk Good music and a nice MC mix on both.

Yes. IMHO, for a pop recording, it does not overdo the surround effects.

NIN - The Downward Spiral

Was Black Market expensive? I could not see paying that much for a non-MCH disc, as the CD I have sounds quite good. If you got a good deal, though, then congrats (the cheapest I've seen it is 45$)

Do you have Violator on SACD as well? If so, how does it compare to Ultra? I have all the DM SACDs up to Violator, but found Violator to be considerably better MC mixed than the others. Some were pretty lame. Ultra is not a bad album, and I think I would get it if it is comparable to Violator.

I got Black Celebration today, and wish I hadn't. It may have some of their classic songs, but I don't enjoy listening to it. Even "Stripped" was a bit disappointing.

Glad to hear it. I use my AW15 fewer than 1 time per week, but love it when I do. Can't wait to get a 1080p PJ in a couple years though.

I have yet to purchase either AB. I already own the MO FI of both and hesitate to buy yet another version. So I am curious what you think about these two in Multi Channel.

well, i'm probably not your best source of info, then, since the SACD versions are the first time i've ever heard those albums- they were blind buys for me.
I do like both of them, though. Very nice mixes to my ears.

the can discs were a bit disappointing. stereo only, and not much better sounding than the cd's i already had.

I have Violator and Ultra sounds just as good I like all the newer ones, even Black Celebration, even if it's a little thinner sounding compared to Violator.

Regards

Cool, thanks for the info. I'll probably pick up Ultra from cdwow.com at some point.

Just got John Hiatt - Bring the Family, and it's quite good. I prefer vocals not to come out of the surrounds, but it still sounds great overall. Nice MC mix.

It's gotten okay reviews on sa-cd.net, but who knows. In the end, personal preference obviously plays a large part. But it wouldn't be a bad idea to pick this (or any SACD) up, as it will likely go out of print in the next couple years and you won't be able to see for yourself then.

I received my DVD-A of Workingman's Dead from Tower this week and finally got a chance to give it a listen yesterday. It was a revelation! I'm not a Deadhead but am familiar with most of their "radio" songs. I was blown away by the surround mix of Uncle John's Band - it was like hearing the song for the first time! The way the instruments were spread across all 5 channels is spectacular. Thanks to BillW for the recommendation.

Also in the shipment was a "deluxe edition" of the Moody Blues' In Search of the Lost Chord that had a "Made in Germany" sticker on the front. Nowhere on the packaging or on the disc itself is there any indication that this is anything other than a remastered redbook CD. However, to my pleasant surprise, when I popped it into my Oppo player, the display said SACD and my receiver showed the converted pcm input (via hdmi) as 88 mhz! It's not multichannel, though, but sounds awesome nonetheless - especially when you consider that it was recorded 40 years ago!

Just got Dire Straits - Walk of Life and it is one of my favorite SACDs already. This is great MC mixing IMO, the ideal way I wish all rock/pop albums would be mixed for MC SACD. Love the soundstage effect with great instrument separation over all the channels, but without changing the original song's dynamics (e.g. no new dominant instruments in the MC mix, etc.). This is a must have SACD for anyone who at least doesn't hate the Dire Straits.

Exactly. I don't think the people who criticize the Moodies SACDs figure this into their criticism. Personally, I think the Moodies SACDs are great, especially for a Moodies fan. If you like ISOTLC, then you should definitely try some of the others, which ARE multichannel (4.0). Unfortunately (and ironically), they "lost" the ISOTLC quad mixes.

Do you mean Brothers in Arms?

You should check out Knoppfler's Sailing to Philadelphia or Shangri-La (and there may be others) hirez releases.

Does anyone know if there any differences between the SACD and Dualdisk(DVDA) versions?

Woops, yeah I meant brothers in arms... How is Shangri-La compared to Brothers in Arms?

If you mean the music itself, it's completely different. Quality-wise I'd actually give the nod to Shangri-La. It's really well done. Not as in-your-face BIA's multichannel mix. But since it was recorded much more recently, the recording quality of Shangri-La is better.

BIA has actually been criticized as being compressed.

They're not DualDiscs. There is a separate CD and DVD. I have the CD+DVD version of Shangri-La but, unlike most people, I prefer DVD-A over SACD. I don't have Sailing to Philadelphia as hirez yet.

The mix of either of these on SACD and DVD-A are identical.

I got FIM's Smooth Jazz Festival in the mail yesterday. Popped it in (before the wife got home) Cranked up the Klipsch Ref's and was floored at the resolution and presentation. Highly recommend. I then went to my headphone rig and plugged up the AKG 701's once again. Stellar, by far one of the best recording SACD's I have heard to date. Need to save up my pennies for FIM's version of "Jazz at the Pawn Shop"

Just got:

Destiny's Child - Survivor
Depeche Mode - Ultra

Survivor is pretty good, Ultra sounds great but the MC mix is uninspired and doesn't utilize the center or surround channels very well. Violator is still the best DM SACD.

My latest pick-up's

Aerosmith - Toys in the Attic (Multi-channel/Stereo)
Joe Satriani - Strange Beautiful Music (Multi-channel/Stereo)
Elton John - Honky Chateau (Multi-channel/Stereo)
Elton John - Captain Fantastic and the Dirt Brown Cowboy (Multi-channel/Stereo)
John Mayer - Heavier Things (Multi-channel/Stereo)

Brothers in Arms was one of the first all digital DDD recordings - which might have been great for CD, but you have to consider that the source was probably no better than 24/48, whereas Shangri-La was in the day and age where professional studios have 32/384 capability and was likely recorded at 24/96 or higher.

Absolutely amazing SACD. The multi-channel fix is friggin' awesome, never being gimicky, just adding an incredibly vast soundscape.

As for the material, I was never too fond of this in the early nineties, but since picking up the SACD last year I have really fallen in love with this. Pretty Hate Machine was my favourite album for probably most of the nineties, right up until I heard Before These Crowded Streets by Dave Matthews Band (which is dying for a 5.1 redo), but it wasn't until this SACD that I realised just how similar Violator was to Pretty Hate Machine.

Great songwriting, absolutely stunning on SACD.

Great way to describe the awesomeness of the Violator MC mix. Pretty Hate Machine would be great in MC SACD also. I remember seeing NIN play the first Lollapalooza down in Irvine, CA in the middle of the day and they f'ing blew that $h!t up. It was incredible.

Berlioz - Requiem
Stuttgart Radio Symphony, Roger Norrington, cond

Finally getting to hear this work as Berlioz envisioned it, despite some odd tempo choices compared to the Boston/Munch recording. The sound is ravishing.

Mahler - Symphony No. 2
Budapest Festival Orchestra, Ivan Fischer, cond.

Like I needed another Second. This makes seven versions in my collection and the second one in SACD.
