Is it possible with current drivers on Nvidia or ATI side to get a 4x3 1080 resolution? Such as 1440x1080i

Let me explain why....

first... I can't afford a new HDTV set for my living room.

I have been running on a 9800XT video card using the ATI component adapter for quite some time now. I am happily using 1280x960 stretched and fit within a 1080i timing so when I stretch the 1080i signal coming in it fully fills my 4x3 HDTV set.

I tried to play around with another system that has a ATI X850XT in it and use the component adapter. This system runs Vista however and powerstrip will not work at all, it just locks the system up hard.

If I set the ATI card to use the 1280x960 resolution it puts it in to a 4x3 area within the 1080i timing. Now my HDTV set does have a setting to zoom in on that area, but it does not fill the whole screen.

Soooo.... I was thinking that maybe I could use a 1440x1080 or similar resolution and zoom and hope the screen is filled.

My reason for wanting to do this is to get to be abel to play games again on my HDTV set, and use Vista.

Is anyone else doing this? I am curious to see how users of older HDTV sets with only component video in are dealing with timings now. I love the way ATI handles it's timings cause let's say you tell it your set is capable of 480i, 480p, 720p and 1080i...when it sees a 800x600 res it puts it in to a 720p timing instead of a 1080i timing and giving toooo much blank area. With nvidia it would keep the 800x600 in a 1080i timing

Anyway.. I'll get to play around more this weekend and see what can be done but curious as I said to see what others are doing in my situation.
