Theoretical question about 5.1 analog connection - Page 2

Awesome, thank you Mauney for taking the time to provide a thoughtful response. You've been very helpful.

On a somewhat related note (forgive me for straying away from HD-DVD topics), a quasi follow-up question.... I was watching Lord of the Rings on DVD yesterday playing around with the sound, and when I switched over to the two-channel audio track my receiver lit up showing "DOLBY DIGITAL 2.0".

Am I correct in assuming that this is LOSSY like DD 5.1? And that it is of lower quality than a lossless 2.0 PCM soundtrack?

If so, do most DVD's have a lossless 2-channel PCM track? I know all DVD's are required to have DD 2.0 as part of the format standard, but is that the highest-quality 2-channel source I can get?

Thanks again, you've been most helpful!

Dolby Digital is always lossy.

No DVD has a lossless track.

Some music dvd titles have PCM but none have lossless.
