List of scope HD DVD/Blu-Ray fims with subtitles in black bars?

I can list a few that are good with the subtitles. The Italian Job - Flightplan -Four Brothers - Basic Instinct. I will do an better lstakeout of my BD-titles soon

I watched Volver recently, the subtitles are not in the black bars. Great movie by the way.

For what it's worth, the UK Blu-ray edition of Black Book has subtitles in the picture. The disc is compatible with Region A.

Has Samsung released the ezyveiw on any of their BD players? It would solve all the problems with subtitles and CIH...

On both Blu-ray and HD DVD, the ability to move subtitles must be encoded on the disc. The player can't do it on its own.

I most certainly hope that the movieindustry will release the next generation of HD DVD players with this option for moving the subs.

Or even better up, just simply put the subs in all the letterboxed movies where the subtitles belong.

Letters from Iwo Jima has the subs in the black bar. I tried to watch this last night. I'm going to have to set up a custom aspect ratio for it.

I've been just casually researching CIH and thought of this issue, then come to this forum to find this topic in the first page of posts. Interesting. Why would they put subtitles in the black bars? That doesn't even match what you see in the theater. Actually, in a minimal way, it alters the director's artistic vision. I think for this and many other reasons, it would be better for me to go with a 1.78 screen for now.

I don't think that is the case at all

use the zoom function on "Letters", button A, go to say 2x and then use the pan function with the directional keypad, what do you see? subtitles moving around with the image to any position you go

Toshiba could implement a position control bare minimum, sizing etc. maybe not, but they move already with the above test so who knows

A very interesting discovery, Gary. I'll see if I can get my Toshiba contact to look into this, but he hasn't been very responsive lately.

My InFocus projector has a scaler mode called letterbox text that almost fills the screen but accomidates some letter box in the bottom so the subs can be seen

Actually, one of the advertised features on La Môme (La Vie en Rose) is adjustable English subtitles (on both BD and HD) which work very much like that. Use key A to reposition the text on the screen and key B to change the text size.

Most of Studio Canal's recent releases on HD DVD have included that feature. It's something that the studio had to specifically encode on the disc.

A little off topic, but CBCHD often shows foreign films with subtitles.
Sometimes the subtitles are in the black bars of the scope film.
The frustrating thing is that sometimes CBC will stretch the picture
to fill a 16:9 screen. You might guess the result. The subtitles are
stretched off the broadcast.
I emailed them suggesting they not do that. No response from them
and the last time I checked CBC was still cutting off the subtitles on
CBCHD through BEV.

Is there any progress in blu-ray subtitle problem for CIH. It appears that there is no solution as blu-ray disk association has stopped manufacturers repositioning subtitles because that violates so called "video path protection". Their XML based solution does not work in some players hence studios don't use it. What type of stuff-up is this? DVDs can reposition subtitles but not the blu-rays.

It appears that the blu-ray association is encouraging and also forcing people to seek unorthodox solutions like AnyDVD.

I don't know how many people are like me, but I like to use English subtitles when watching a movie while listening to the audio commentary. That way, I can still follow the dialog of the movie at the same time. It's a real pain when they display them in the black bar area. The majority of Blu-ray movies I own are like this, and it's ridiculous that because of the way they are encoded that you can't move them. On the other hand, very few, if any HD-DVDs have the subtitles in the black bar areas.

I would like to mention that the Blu-ray release of I, Robot, in addition to having a stellar transfer, displays the subtitles in the movie image, and NOT in the Black Bars...so hooray for that.

Columbia Tristar Sony Pictures has stuffed the subtitles of the second Bollywood blu-ray movie Saawariya.

It has one line on the picture and the other on the black bar rendering the disk in its original form useless for CIH (continuous image height) displays thus forcing people to seek alternative solutions. How ridiculous.

I opened the case and asked my 12 year old son to insert the disk to our PS3 to be displayed on our Sony vw60 anxiously thinking Sony must have got the subtitles right. (We are a Sony family! Sony supports CIH by providing anamorphic stretch in vw60) Disk was played on the PS3, once selected the stuffed up subtitles appeared. My 12 year old son said: “Dad, they have stuffed up the subtitles. How can we watch this movie?” I did not have a friendly answer to that question. It is very interesting that my 12 year old boy said (without me influencing his thinking): “Dad, they have million subtitles in this, why didn’t they add another subtitle track fully on the picture, so we could have watched this movie.”

I had to explain to him the fact that some people have tunnel vision and it is very hard to force them to see outside of that tunnel. Also I had to explain that in some cases in some large organizations, the right hand does not know what the left hand does.

This is unfortunate and unbelievable. This could have been avoided very easily and it is ironic that this happened after informing Sony about this issue numerous times through this forum and other major forums. I am not sure anymore how to communicate with large companies …….

I urge blu-ray disk association to inform all studios about this (easily fixable) significant technical problem and request them to add an extra subtitle track fully on the picture for CIH displays and the zoomers. After all this is a matter of few more clicks in the authoring program. Please do this.

I wish Sony CEO read this post.

Unfortunately, Patton has the German Subtitles half in the bar half in the pixture area. Anytime there are Germans speaking this is an issue.

What do you CIH folks do when subtitles aren't within the screen area? Not watch the movie? Guess what they're saying? Watch in 16::9 in the middle of the screen with a smaller image and black bars? Affix something (temp screen extension?) below the screen to make the subtitles appear?

This just shows that in someways 2.35:1 set ups are ahead of their time. They are intruding 2.35 projectors (internal capability without anamorphic lenses using the 4K chip) at CEDIA. This will get more interesting.
