Denon AVR-2308CI vs Onkyo TX-SR705

Im trying to make a decision between these two receivers, both are Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD encoders, both 100w by 7... Any suggestions on which would be a better buy in terms of sound quality and reliability? Which eats less electricity?

I have the 705 and like it a lot. One deciding factor was the extra HDMI input (IIRC the Denon only has two). The Onkyo also looks to be about $200 or so cheaper (street). The Denon has the cool looking GUI going for it; but other than a different cosmetic look and Denon's reputation I don't see any advantage to it.

thats what I was thinking, denon is known for quality, both are future proof with 1.3a hdmi its just do i want to spend the extra money on the denon, i only have an hd dvd and dvr so i only need two hdmi anyway... i have heard a lot of people however are having problems with onkyos and repeated clicking and overheating so this is kind of scaring me away from onkyo

I've yet to see a single comment about the Onkyo "overheating". Do they get hot?...yes, but overheat...not that I've heard.

supposedly they get so hot that they start to click in and out, in and out over and over... i would assume you could call this overheating, it is a known issue by onkyo

I just picked up a 705 a couple of weeks ago. I have it sitting in a built in entertainment center with a DVD player on top of it. It gets pretty warm, but not scorching hot and I have never heard any clicking whatsoever.

Why would you do that? If you read the manuel you will see that you are going against their recomendations to keep the unit cool. Everytime I read about a receiver/amp overheating it always ends up being the buyers falt because they have it stuck in the corner under a blanket.

From what I have read the clicking isnt an issue with the Onkyo 705. It was only found in the 605 and 805 models.

Here's something to chew on... I saw someone citing that the Onkyo's are drawing like 200W more than the Denons from the wall... yet they are getting extremely hot. This drove me to buy a Denon, because to me that screams "inefficiency" and not "big power".

The Denon GUI also gives you more feedback on what the Audyssey auto-eq is doing, if that matters to you.
