5:1 Surround Sound Setup Problem

My builder placed the two front speaker connection in the ceiling instead of on the wall on either side of the screen as requested. They also did not install connection for a center channel. Is it ok to have both front and rear in the ceiling, and are there other options for the center channel other than having them rip the wall out and start over again? Thanks.

No - have them rip it out. BTW, where was the center suppoed to be? Also, it's 5.1.

Thanks ekb. I thought the center was to be installed in the center of the wall below the screen. Anyway, they didn't even bother to install the center. Are there cases where all four speakers in a 5.1 setup is placed in the ceiling? They aren't going to be happy about having to rip the wall and ceiling out but that's what will need to be done. One would think that is a simple enough setup that they should get right first time around when there was no wall in place. Now they will have to do it the hard way. Thanks.

Make sure you tell them EXACTALLY where you want the speaker connection.

it would be rather easy to rerun them in the wall from the basement..... just make sure if you had it right that they dont charge you....

yes you can have all 5 speakers in the ceiling, you can even have the sub in the wall or there

bottom line if your going in ceiling make sure you buy good speakers with aimable tweeters at the very LEAST if not aimable mid

Another thing to make sure of is make is seal off the area if you can where the speaker is

Case and point.... did a game room in someones half finished basement.... went around the back threw up some 2x4's and plywood to seal them off and the $700 bic inwalls (included sub) really did a great job (

Big fan of it's not so much what you have it's how you use it

Putting all of the speakers in the ceiling is not a good idea.

Ceiling mounted mains, centers and surrounds produce an odd sound stage that is very different from what was intended. This is less of an issue with the surrounds.

A sub woofer placed in or against the ceiling should sound about the same as if it were placed on the floor directly below.

The Dolby Labs room layouts are the benchmark. Here is a pertinent part-

"Ideally,

your front speakers, high-frequency drivers, or tweeters should be positioned at ear level (when you're seated). Our recommended height for the surrounds is above ear level, as soundtracks are likely to be optimized for that location" (Emphasis added).

I've installed these a few times with good results, when wives go for the less than ideal sound and more for the clutter free room look.....

They sound Great to most people..... but yes in the end inwall would work better.... but then floorstanding would be ideal
