Yamaha HTR-5460 Shutdown Issue

Hi, I made a very unwise decision and bought a used receiver off ebay. Said it only had cosmetic damage and powered on and functioned fine. I thought it was a great deal but actually it wasn't. It does power on. The problem is when I hook my MP3 player or any other component up to the audio RCA inputs and turn the volume up not even a fourth of the way the receiver shuts down. If no component is connected I can turn the volume up all the way. This is without any speakers connected. The problem arises whether or not they are connected. While speakers are connected at low volumes I can here output from the speakers. Once it gets just above a whisper it shuts off. I took the top case off...I have some knowledge of electronics but not degree in electrical engineering at all so i really am not sure what im looking for. I see no burnt or damaged boards, nor any exploded capacitors. Anyone have any idea into what the issue may be? Is it junk?

Thanks in advance.

I dont want to be the bearer of bad news but it sounds like your unit has activated the circuitry protection feature. If you cant get past 1/4 volume and it shuts off something is wrong internally with the unit and it needs service, bad. Your best bet is to unhook all your speaker wires and plug one in and see if you can turn the volume up all the way with the right front speaker and then plug in the Left front and try it with that and so forth. You may want to visually inspect your wires for any loose speaker strands, touching the metal of the receiver or a tack under the carpet that puntured the surround wires maybe. It doesnt look good but if you can turn the vol up all the way with one speaker plugged in, that means its not the receiver, and if you get to Surround Left channel and the unit shuts off, you have a bad wire there and I would just replace the speaker wire. Hope this helps some! Hang in there!

A friend of mine have a Yamaha receiver and I was looking into buying a one as well and he told me that sometimes when he play an non-original DVD it shut down by it self to protect something in the system. I am not a professional so I didn't get what he is saying :S

It might me something wrong with the device you are using, so try to hook another MP3 player and see if it still shut down or not.

check your speakers wires one by one. A crossed wire or damaged wire can do this.

I am having a similar problem. I have the Yamaha HTR-5840 and just added new Front L/R (Energy C-100) as well as a center channel (Energy C-C100). I used new, 14 G speaker wire from Monoprice. I have rear satellite speakers with the wires plugged into the AVR - the speakers are not connected, though. Anyways, everything worked fine.

A few minutes ago, I was watching "The Godfather" on TV. I turned it up and after a little while, my AVR turned off. When I turned it back on, there was a message saying "Check SP Wire." After a few seconds, it turned back off. I've noticed that it only happens when the volume is up. For instance, it's at -30 right now and working fine. What can I do?!
