As I mentioned in my post, I spoke with a Sony rep regarding this and am simply passing on the information provided to me.
Linear PCM - uncoded stereo 2 channel audio signal
Bitstream - encoded 5.1 signal
Therefore, if the PS3 is connected directly to your HDTV you would use "Linear PCM" for the 2 channel stereo in the TV; however, running an HDMI cable from the PS3 to the 2808CI, you would select "Bitstream" to get the full audio signal that the 2808CI will "decode."
The reason the PS3 Warning for "bitstream" shows up is that I don't believe there are any TV's on the market that can decode a "bitstream" audio signal, not to mention that the majority of PS3 owners don't have have an AVR that can decode the "bitstream" signal. The warning is letting you know that if you select bitstream your TV/AVR may not be able to decode the signal. This is NOT the case for us 2808CI owners.
