It may be a huge hulking box in my living room, but you can't touch the picture.

I've heard good things as well re: professional calibration, although I'm waiting on the latest version (2006) of Digital Video Essentials to come out on BD in order to calibrate on my own.

For those of you with CRTs looking to add HDMI capability check this out:

There is no comparison between doing it on your own, and having a pro do it, at least with a CRT. He had my Mits completely apart down to the chassis. Not something you do yourself.

I am looking at the exact same TV but still trying to decide on 2808 vs. 3808. Does your 2808 show OSD for setup as well as volume over HDMI to your TV? Any input you have is appreciated.

any input? would like to see the volume over the HDMI video signal

I simply placed my mic on top of the headrests on my seats. The setup sounds pretty good to my ears.

Finally got my Denon 2808 Last night. Spent most of the morning setting it up. So far the impressions are mixed as I upgraded from a Pio Elite (the Pio didn't have HDMI and the nex gen Audio decodes) Audessy was straight forward except I didn't like how it setup the Speaker Level for the Center Channel and the Sub. And boy do I hate HDMI. I have Motorola DVR hooked and the trusty Pio 4360 for display. Whenever I switch from the analog signal (xbox 360 being converted to HDMI for the so called single cable solution) to the HDMI connected DVR the display flickers on and off once and then its ok after that never had this problem with the trusty Analogue connections or when it was hooked directly to the Pio with HDMI. (maybe I have the setup wrong any tips are appreciated) makes me wanna slam this HDMI thing to pieces such an unreliable tech. Will give more impressions when I have spent more time with it.

Anyone know if the faceplate on the 2808 is aluminum or plastic? Hard to tell by looking!

Hey everyone, I just order a new 2808 and kef's iq7's. Should arrive soon I am alittle nervous though because I keep reading how I should of bought onkyo 805 or 875. I am sure I wont be dissappointed. But anyways my question is, can I use the 2808 to bi-amp my front 2 kef's. I was told I can but not sure realy how to. Any help would be great.
And also if any of you guys heard the 2808 compared to 805 and 875 tell me what you though.

Thanks

Hi guys,

Hopefully someone can help me out with this, I just got the 2808 and both hdmi inputs are connected. With the DVD input I get surround input surround output on the display panel, but with the HDP input I get surround input stereo output. The only time it outputs surround is if it recieved a stereo input signal. I've read and re-read the manual and still can't get it to output surround sound, can someone please tell me what i'm doing wrong?

I bought my 2808 from 6th ave, as well as my HD DVD player last year. They don't always send email confirmations for phone orders as quickly, but this is not a shady company. Give them a call or send an email and I am sure they can give you a status.

Just got mine set up yesterday and I love it. It replaces my Denon 1803 and I am glad I stuck with Denon instead of going the 805 route. I just can't believe the difference with TrueHD and DD+ with my A35 compared to my old receiver through optical. The build quality is again top notch and the sound is perfect through my Def Tech's. The Audessey actually set my room up quite well.

When I read the manual it said to make sure that there are no small children around when running it. That made me wonder how loud that was going to be and it wasn't bad, I thought that was funny though.

I was thinking of the 3808 but the extra 20w doesn't mean much to me and the 2808 does have GUI, just not the most up to date one, but again doesn't mean much to me. The only thing that mattered was the extra 2 hdmi inputs but I only need 2 and for the extra money I didn't see them worth that much more to me.

Hi All,
Spent most of the weekend setting up the denon. Must say it’s a bit complicated as it took me forever to figure out hot get the sound out of the optical out for my Pio Wireless Headset. Maybe I am used to the Pio setup that why the problem hopefully will get used to it. Quick question though is there a way to select recout from the remote?
I am going analogue for now as the HDMI is too much of a headache so it’s gonna be on the back burner till I need to decode NExgen Audio
Thanks in advance.

Does anyone here have the AVR-988p? What are the differences between that and the AVR-988?

Got one, AFAIK the only difference is styling and the 2808 has zone 3 outputs and a better remote.

Thanks, I was thinking about getting one from sweetwater but it looks as there are much better deals elsewhere.

alright, i am pre planning how to run all my new gear. as you can see above ^^^ i just got my Denon.

my planned equipment is pretty much complete at this point:

2808CI
Sanyo z2000 projector 1080p
D* HD Tivo Box
Tosh HD DVD
Sony Playstation 3

The Sanyo z2000 has two HDMI inputs so I am wondering if I should run one piece of gear, like a DVD player, directly to it with just optical to the receiver for sound. in other words, is it better to run some sources directly to the display unit if you can?

then i could run the DirecTv HD Box and other DVD player via HDMI to the Denon.

it really gets a little bit confusion. especially the more you read .

later.

Run your DVR to the projector and run optical to the AVR, since you only will get 5.1 DD out of that anyway.

Run your HD DVD and PS3 to the AVR using HDMI, so you can get HD sound over PCM.

when listening to music, how do i get my center speaker engaged? so far, all i get is left and right speakers. on my old yamaha it had the effect feature that had the center channel as the main vocal with the right and left channels.

See page 36 of the manual: "Standard Playback". It tells you to use the "STD" button on the remote to select any of the various surround modes (these output to the center speaker). The "STD" button is not a physical button but one of the "EL Display" buttons in the top section of the remote. You may need to press the (physical) "HOME" button on the remote to put the remote into "AMP" mode. You may also need to cycle through the "AMP" El button to get to where the "STD" button is available.

In the same "EL Display" you can select "PURE", or "D/ST" to get only L+R output from stereo sources. This may be why you are not getting center channel output.

One other point. There are both "CINEMA" and "MUSIC" surround modes. "MUSIC" will not put as much to the center speaker as "CINEMA" will.

If none of the above help, be sure you have set up your speaker configuration correctly. See either "Auto Setup" (page 23) or "Manual Setup" (page 26). I recommend auto setup. You need to be sure that "Center Speaker" is not set to "NONE".

question guys.....I am having a bit of an issue with source volume with my 2808. When switching from Cable/tv to DVD the volume is much higher. Is there anyway to match the source volumes?
I'm thinking of upgrading my 3801 to the 2808ci and have some questions. I have a Tosahiba HDA2 and a Pany BD10A and am running a standard 5.1 rig. I have the A2 connected vial optical and the 10A connected with 3 sets of RCA's into the ext. in to get the PCM and trueHD; here's my questions:

If I upgrade and connect the Pany 10A via HDMI will I still be able to get the uncompressed PCM? If so does the receiver just get set to PCM for that? If I have the A2 and 10A connected via HDMI can I still watch movies just using the sound from the TV or do I have to have the 5.1 on when watching movies? Is setting up similar to the 3801? Can I set the 2808 to "auto" so it will auto detect PCM. DTSHD, TrueHD, etc.?

much thanks for any help/info

See the manual page 36; "Source Level". The source level can be adjusted differently for each input source.
