The "Official" Denon AVR-2808CI Owners Thread - Page 111

In reading the reviews on Amazon for this product, it seems they might be better suited for Zone 2 speakers then as surround speakers. Connect them to the Zone 2 pre-outs and set the TUNER to Zone 2 and see if you get audio.

I have a Roku box connected to my 2808CI via component video and optical audio. It has been working fine for over a year. All of a sudden I get no video but I do get the audio. I was concerned that the Roku had died but I disconnected my cable box and then connected the Roku via HDMI were the cable box was connected and everything worked fine.

Any ideas as to why this may have quit working?

Thanks!

Make sure neither the [Video Convert] or [i/p Scaler] settings for the Roku input didn't get set to OFF. Otherwise, you may have to try resetting the microprocessor (p. 50).

Have you tried resetting thr Roku? Pull the power for about 10 seconds.

Thanks jdsmoothie! I reset the microprocessor and all is well! The good news is I don't have to buy a new AVR....The bad news is I don't HAVE to buy a new AVR!

Thanks again!

Hi guys!

I was wondering if anybody could enlighten me about the firmwares 2808 has received. I haven't updated it and I bought it day 1. Has it made any BIG differences since the original FW? Has anything got worse or better? Or is there a List where you can see all the differences

I would appreciate all the help!
^ Hi. You could start here, jd is our FW expert.

Thx sound of mind..

One question to you guys,

I have Denon 2808, Magnat Quantum 705 as FL/FR, B&W MT10 for center and SR/SL and B&W ASP2 Subwoofer which came with the MT10 set.

About Crossover, If I set "Large" for FR/FL and the rest "small" is it recommended to go with LFE+Main for best and powerfull bass? The crossover is set to 100hz on the reciever.
^^^
Whenever there's a sub in the setup, the recommendation is to set all speakers to SMALL; however, if you prefer more bass then, yes, you would set the mains to LARGE with the sub set to LFE+Main.

I put on Kung Fu Panda BD today for my daughter and I noticed the Denons display said "DTS Surround" ?? I looked at the display of the Oppo and it said "TrueHD". So I toggled through the remote and no luck getting it to read the Dolby lossless codec. Any ideas? Why would it default to generic DTS when the BD player is sending out Dolby TrueHD? Help, Please.
it has nothing to do with the receiver, check your Blu-ray player.

the receiver cannot "choose" the audio on the Blu-ray, all it does is play what you give it.

what does the receiver report as the input signal? (press STATUS and read the display)
That's just it, the player says TrueHD in the display window and the on screen display also. After I take my daughter to school, I will put in the disk again and push the status button.
not the player, the RECEIVER -- what does the 2808 say it's getting as the input signal?
The receiver says it is getting DTS. The player says it is sending TrueHD. This is the strange part.

sig. : DTS
fs :48khz
if the receiver says it is getting DTS, that's what it is getting.

play around with settings on the Oppo and also try a couple other BD's to see if it's only happening with that disc or any TrueHD track. You may want to ask (or search) in the Oppo owner's thread.
ok, thanks for input.

Nice website by the way.
problem fixed..The "secondary audio" on the Oppo was set to "on". That caused the issue. Thanks for your help.
I've read most of this thread (and batpig.com) and It has been extremely helpful...especially the knowledge that av downscaling doesn't happen and that I need to hook up with multiple connections to use HDMI on main zone and Analog on zone 2.

I still have one question I couldn't find an answer to: what is the 2nd component video out for? It is shaded like the rest of the zone 2 outputs but everything I've read says you can only send composite video out to zone 2. I really need to know as I am about to purchase a 2x4 matrix switch to send A/V to every room in my house...and need to know if I have to buy a composite one or can I go component for better video quality? And...if it doesn't send zone 2, then does that mean there are two main zone component video outs?
^^
Correct. There are two Main zone component video out jacks.
Is there any work-around for this at all? Or maybe my question should be what is the cheapest (lowest model) Denon AVR with component video/digital audio or even HDMI Zone 2 capability?
There are no Denon AVRs that can pass HDMI to Zone 2. The top of the line 5308 (MSRP $5500) is the lowest model that can pass component video to Zone 2. Your best option is likely to connect an HDMI or component splitter (or the matrix switch you mentioned) to the source with one end going to the 2808 and the other to the Zone 2.
OK, I know my HD cable box will do it, but will my PS3 output A&V thru both HMDI (for Zone 1) and composite/stereo RCA (for use in Zone 2)?

I really need some help on this...

I have a 2808ci and now that my HT has been upgraded to 3d blu-ray, I figured I needed to upgrade the receiver to one that can handle high speed/ hdmi 1.4 right? Maybe not.

I have a Panasonic DMP BDT 100 3d blu-ray player hooked up to the receiver and the monitor out HDMI to my mitsubishi wd-73835.

Everything I've ever read tells me that I should not be getting lossless audio from this receiver in this set-up. Funny thing is though, I am. I watched several 3d dvds and the receiver is displaying dts hd master audio. I thought it would only be dolby digital. What am I missing here? Maybe I won't have to upgrade the receiver?
If the BDP can pass HD audio then the AVR will play it. The issue is that an HDMI 1.3 AVR cannot play full 1080p 3D video. What resolution are you passing to the 2808?

TV is displaying 1080p. The only way I know to check the resolution the tv is putting out is to press the info button on the tv remote. When I do it reads 1080p standard.
You're able to watch a full 1080p 3D movie? You may find that it works for some movies but not all 3D movies depending on how they are recorded.
Yes, that's why I am freaking out! I have watched the following movies so far:

Monster House 3D
A Christmas Carol 3D
Clash of the Titans 3D
IMAX Deep Sea 3D
Despicable Me 3D
Open Season 3D
Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs 3D
IMAX Space Station 3D
Shrek 1 3D (I have Shrek 2-4 but haven't watched them yet.)

When I first hooked up my 3d blu-ray player, I hooked it up directly to the TV because I didn't expect to be able to run it through the AVR. Then, I wanted to hear how it would sound if I hooked up the AVR. I didn't expect it to work (based on everything I have been reading). But it is working fine.

I had to set my TV to checkerbox (the same with the blu-ray player) because I have a 2009 DLP TV that was barely 3D capable and will only display 3D if I hook up a Panasonic 3d blu-ray player or if I want to have 3D DirecTV, I have to use the 3d adapter (I have it but haven't used it yet because I don't have box DirecTV box yet). Oh, I bought an IR emitter as well.

I have to be missing something here but the 3D picture is fabulous!
The checkerboard format is only "Half HD 3D" or (960x1080p) which is what the Mitsu DLP can receive and why it will pass through the 2808 as it's not FULL HD 3D. Regardless, enjoy your 3D BD's.
Thanks JD. You seem to be very knowledgeable and I respect that. However, I absolutely have full 1980x1080p showing on my TV. My TV is 120Hz but displays two 60Hz images in the checkerbox format with my current hookup. I have been comparing the two images back & forth through (through the AVR & then direct to the TV from the 3d blu-ray) and these images are identical.

And, honestly, if my eyes were so bad they couldn't tell the difference, then ignorance is bliss my friend.
Like I said ... enjoy the 3D format, however, it's not FULL HD 3D, otherwise it would not pass through the 2808.

This from the Mitsubishi site ...

Checkerboard — The Checkerboard format is really designed as method of displaying 3D on the TV and is not one of the HDMI 1.4a 3D signals. However Checkerboard signals can be transferred over normal high speed HDMI cables. The Mitsubishi 3D TVs display 3D using the checkerboard format so the Mitsubishi 3D Adapter is designed to convert the Frame Packing, Side-By-Side and Top-and-Bottom signals mentioned above to the checkerboard format.

And this from another site which indicates the Mitsu DLP TV's can only display "Half full-3D HD."
