The "Official" Denon AVR-2808CI Owners Thread - Page 122

As the 2808 is 6yrs old, the part may no longer be available; however, if it is, the repair shop should be able to provide the cost of the part and the estimated labor cost in order to determine if it makes sense to repair the unit.

DM-A405 Audyssey Mic

If for some reason you don't get the DM-A405, send a PM to member ccotenj as he's got a spare mic he'll mail you. smile.gif

Hello again - just got the unit and the Mic for Audyssey setup - very excited.

One last question about HDMI hookup. I was reading Wiki in regards to HDMI specs - and HDMI 1.3 introduced 'deep color' bit depths. After research, it appears that my projector is compatible with this technology, and my video card is HDMI 1.4a spec - so it is too.

Will this unit 'pass through' the deep color signal? Or is there a setting I must set?
^^^

it should... note: "should"... not "will"...

that being said, there are no deep color sources... and interpolating to deep color really doesn't accomplish anything, ime...
I have my computer system as my main media player. Even computers cant out put at deep color? Traditionally computers have been far ahead of the curve when it comes to graphics output.
Having "Deep Color" enabled on devices will often cause HDMI video handshake issues, so you may have to set it to off on the HTPC.
Is this handshake an issue with the 2808? Or just something inherent in the new HDMI spec?
It may occur with any model AVR.

Hey guys - just got the unit setup and am trying the Audyssey setup.

For some reason my subwoofer isnt playing. I have it hooked to the SW Pre Out just like I did on my old 2803 - but nothing during playback from music - or the audyssey auto setup.

Any ideas?
If there's no sub test tone during Auto Setup, then there's likely either a problem with the sub itself or the cable. Pull the cable from the AVR's sub pre-out and rub your finger over it. If you don't hear static from the sub, try replacing the cable. If still no joy, check the sub.
Make sure you have it on the correct pre out on the receiver, pretty easy to mix it up.

primetime - I checked it one last time before checking here - sure enough - since I am working on it IN the rack and backwards - I put the pre-outs into the EXT IN ports. Now the sub is playing since I actually put the pre-outs INTO the pre-out ports.

I am just about to do the Audyssey setup - but I listened to a TrueHD source for 2 mins to test the sub - EXCELLENT sound - I was wondering if I would be able to tell the difference from standard dolby/dts.. I cant wait to watch all my favs again.

One last question about the 'deep color'. My NVidia GTS 450 card detected the denon receiver. In the computer graphics properties - the 32bit color depth IS selected. Is this the same thing though?
Ok, one final question about the audio setup.

I ran the Audyssey setup - with all 8 positions. It set every speaker to my liking except for the sub.

Can I go in manually and adjust the sub Db up without destroying the rest of the Audyssey setup? Because right now next to the volume on the front of the unit it shows the audyssey box - and I like knowing that it is there.
Yes, you can adjust the sub volume without impacting the Audyssey filters, although if the sub volume was set to -12db, you'll want to lower the volume on the sub and run Audyssey again until the sub volume gets set closer to within +/-3db (or at least closer to 0db than -12db).
So just go in through the Manual setup - and adjust the sub level back?

The sub showed up at -5 db after running the auto setup.
Ok, I was reading through the Audyssey FAQ - and one of my questions mirrors a very popular one.

My front speakers have a tweeter, 4 inch mid driver, and a powered 6-8" bass driver (cant remember if it is 6 or 8).

The front speakers take a Pre-Out. Which is why I bought the 2808 over other models - the Pre-Outs.

So since the front speakers plug into the wall and have their own power for the bass - the AVR shouldn't be straining power-wise to provide them with lower frequencies.

The only thought I saw on the FAQ is the possibility of the bass from the front phasing out the bass from the sub.

Any thoughts? Should I leave the powered front speakers on LARGE with LFE + Main even though that is highly discouraged in the FAQ?
^^^

no you shouldn't... there are good reasons why it's highly discouraged...

i have seen many "good" graphs from people using bass management correctly... i have never seen a set of graphs tha look good when using it "incorrectly"...

it really doesn't have anything to do with "not straining the amp", although that is a beneficial byproduct... it has everything to do with acoustics...

Hi guys,

I recently purchased one of these and have a front speakers right away. It seemed to blow my front right speaker which was a decent Kef so should have been OK connected to the device. I don't push stuff hard anyway - this is home cinema and kind to the neighbours versions of it. I then bought a couple of Oli 10's as it fits with this small room and they lasted about an hour before going dead.

I have tested the speakers and they are gone, busted. The Kef's ran for years off a Yammy amp, so I think something in this beats of an amp is simply set all wrong and is now stomping all over my front L and R speakers frown.gif

Can anyone help?

Jeff

First visually check the speaker wire from the AVR to each of the FL/FR speakers to ensure there are no loose strands or cuts in the wire (use a multi meter if necessary to check if there is a short in the wiring). Then reset the microprocessor (p. 50 OM) to reset all settings to their factory defaults. Then use the AUTO SETUP (Audyssey) program to properly set the volume levels of each speaker/sub in your setup.

With your speakers, the only pre-out that should be used on the 2808 is the "sub" pre-out which most every 5.1/7.1 AVR features. If you also have a dedicated sub, you should be using (2) RCA "Y" connectors, one connected to the AVR with one side going to the dedicated sub and the other side going to the 2nd "Y" connector, with each side of the 2nd connector going to each of the FL/FR speakers.

Thanks JD - I was careful on the hookups and the cabling is done well - I used the mic to set it up but hadn't reset it back to factory default so will do that tonight and hopefully not ruin a 3rd pair of speakers.

Where did you purchase the AVR from? If a hi-fi shop, considering returning it and having them check it out for defective amps. If the AVR is not defective, it should not have caused any issues with the speakers with the volume set below 0db or providing there was no distortion heard prior to them blowing out. To avoid blowing out a 3rd set of speakers (if you cannot have the hi-fi shop check it), invest in a multi meter (aka voltmeter) to check the speaker output voltage.

Wow........didn't realize that a thread for this existed. I just bought a refurbished 2808CI......for price I bought it for I can deal with the quirks. It didn't come with a remote so I've been searching for a remote to access some features. Anyone have any ideas which Denon remotes(model #s,etc) will control this? My universal works fine but would like all the features accessible via remote. Other than that, love it and really like the restorer feature. Upgraded from a AVR-883......so I love my Denons.
Although it's likely a number of different Denon remotes would work, the model that comes with the unit is the RC-1068.
Hello again.

So far enjoying this amp quite a bit!

I posted before about my sub not being set correctly via Audyssey.

So I went into Manual setup and changed the sub output level, and set the front speakers to small, crossovers to 80hz, and low frequencies to LFE only etc.

When I do the 'check' in the Auto Setup - it still shows all the levels the way Audyssey defined them - including the size of the front speakers.

When I go to Manual - all the proper settings that I put in are there.

When I play audio - the Audyssey logo appears in the top right of the display - so isn't the unit using the Audyssey specs? Not the ones that I entered in Manual?

How do I properly adjust the Audyssey/Auto values?
The "parameter check" values are just a report card and will not change. It's just there as information so you know what the auto setup measured. The values set in manual setup always take precedence.
JDSmoothie - in regards to your post about my sub and front speaker pre-outs - I found: http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2103709

I will pick up two of these and give it a shot. Thanks for the info!!
Hey guys, I have an issue w/ my 2808ci & have not been able to find help anywhere. Hope one of you all have been through this or know what the deal is-

Every once in a while (it is getting to be increasingly more frequent), I will lose picture and sound. This only happens on HD channels. Sometimes the picture & sound will comeback after a few seconds, other times it will not come back at all & the TV will display "No Video Signal."

I am confident the 2808 is to blame b/c when this happens, the display on the left hand side of the LCD will flicker and/or dissapear.

Anybody else have this happen to them or know what is going on?

Thanks :cheers
it is virtually certain it is either your cable box or the hdmi cable between your cable box and the avr...

a) try a different hdmi cable (note: not more expensive. different.)...

b) replace your cable box...

as confident as you are that the avr is at fault, the symptoms don't match your diagnosis... smile.gif
post #3660 of 3723
Has anyone tried passing a 3D signal through the 988? Any Success? Would like to know if there are any options besides buying a dual hdmi output blu ray player to get 3D video and lossless audio via hdmi and the 988.
