Can't Decice on a receiver, need help!

I have a decision to make... I have read a ton of threads about each receiver, but I can't make a decision.

I am looking to set up a 5.1 system. I have chosen my speakers... Polk RM6750B from Fry's for 200 dollars.

The next decision I have to make is the receiver. I have been torn between three, and I can't decide. I figure I will tell you all what I have, and you can help me decide between the three, or maybe offer me up a completely different solution.

I have a Sharp Aquos 32D62U LCD 1080p, PS3 (my blu-ray player), XBOX 360 with HD-DVD player (no HDMI port, only component), and a HDTV DVR cable box. I am looking to mostly watch movies and play games.

I want to be able to transfer audio over HDMI, because I hate dealing with a ton of cables, but if I have to I will. Each item has an optical audio port. I also want to be able to connect my XBOX 360 to the receiver (through the component connection red blue green or whatever) and receive 1080i (which is what it converts games into). I want the PS3 to be at it's full potential, because that is why I bought a 1080p TV. My TV won't accept 1080p over component, but only HDMI (I have two ports). I don't want to be forced to play my games in 720p on the XBOX 360 (unless it looks better than 1080i never tried).

The three I have looked at are the Onkyo 605, the Yamaha 661, and the Sony DG910. If there is somthing else I need to look at, please let me know. I willing to spend no more than 700 dollars.

Thank you.

In the $700 and under range, the Onkyo 705 is a good choice. It comes w/ 3 HDMI inputs vs. the 2 in the Onkyo 605. Circuit City and many other etailers sell the 705 for around $700 or less - WAY less sometimes - like $550.

That said, I would seriously recommend that you allocate your budget more towards your speakers rather than the receiving. Driving a $200 set of really small bookshelf speakers w/ an amp like the 605 or 705 is overkill and a bit of a waste of money. It's like installing a 300 hp twin turbo BMW engine into a Kia Sephia.

I agree with both points. I have the 705 and really like it; but since the OP's Xbox doesn't have HDMI a 605 may make more sense, along with an upgrade in speakers. The 605 doesn't have the more complete feature set of the 705 (THX, PLIIx for PCM, pre-outs, etc), but these would likely be of much less importance than getting good basic sound to begin with.

Well is there a set of speakers you all would recommend that is not over 700 dollars?

The room is 12x10x8 (lwh) and I can't put big floor speakers in there. Any other suggestions?

The X-Series from AV123 are bookshelf as well, not just floorstanders... x-ls and x-cs.

I can definitely vouch for the 605. I got a PS3 and an 360 (with HDMI) and they both run through the 605 just fine. I really like this reciever! I just wish it had a 3rd HDMI input because I am having to run my Dish HD-DVR over component video and optical audio. Its a few more cables but its not too bad. I just need to get back there and tie wrap everything nicely. I also have a terk HDMI-31 switch on order which hopefully works like its supposed to and everything will run over HDMI to the receiver and then there would only a single HDMI cable to the TV.

Those are nice speakers, but the subwoofer won't be in till 10/25 I think. That is what keeps me from wanting to buy them. I am hoping to have everything set up next week. Do you all have any other suggestions?
