You previously used a TiVo. This is a common criticism by long-time TiVo users who tend to watch recorded or timeshifted content almost exclusively.
After years of TiVo use, you've become accustomed to never
learning the score before you start a timeshifted sports event, never
seeing or learning key plot points in series and movies before you start watching, etc. Customers with other DVRs are accustomed to these things, so in general, it doesn't bother them to the same extent.
design makes sense for those that watch timeshifted content almost exclusively. It's not ideal for those that still like to watch a lot of liveTV. Thus their product is generally well-liked by those that watch only timeshifted content and disliked by those that watch a lot of liveTV.
First-time DVR users typically come from standard STBs, so they want and expect to see the liveTV window at all times; like most other operators, Dish Network caters to the demands of these customers. Even so, many feel that Dish does the best job at balancing the demands of different viewers. Their ViP722 may not serve the 95% timeshifter as well as TiVo, but it does a pretty good job, and it does far better when it comes to handling liveTV which is what many want.
