Anyone else connecting an external Hard drive to their dish 622 reciever to get more HD recording space? If so can you tell me what you used, cost and how many more HD hours recording will you get...
Thanks for any info..

I have a Dish 942 and would like to know also. Thanks for letting me piggyback on your request!

I know this. On the 722 I am about to get Dish wants 39.99 one time fee to ACTIVATE the USB port. What a crock of crap. It should be active when you receive it. This is some more BS like the DVR fees. Thankfully I have a large enough hard drive that I won't need to ACTIVATE the USB port and don't have to pay DVR fees because I have the Everything pack.

I'm just wondering How much space you get on an external drive, and I'm wondering if you can use some type of flash USB stick instead of a stand alone drive....I put a email into Dish asking some questions...
I don't understand why Dish offers the 722 to only new customers and why the people who have been paying for their service have to pay to upgrade to the 722....

I hear that. Go to Dish's website there is a section about the hard drives you add.

Each EHD can be up to 750Gig and you can have as many as you want. Only one drive can be hooked up at a time. Yes, I have heard you can use a usb stick but not sure why anyone would want to.

I have a 500GB external HD connected to the 622 usb port worked fine (after activation) if a bit slow. I hooked the drive to my PC. XP doesn't see the drive but using partition magic I can see the 500gb drive is partitioned into two linux partitions. The first one is real small and the second is the remainder of the disk. How do you open - view linux partitions in XP? I am curious what format the files are in.

Jetmeck,

Do you have a link to that website? I can't find it.

Thanks.

I talked to DN about this today and they said that the recorded files are
mpeg2.

I'd like to know if I can swap an EHD between my Vip722 and my PS3, since both devices need the formatting of the EHD to be FAT32 and the PS3 supports mpeg2.

I posted this to forum DISH to Enable External USB Drives but received no reply.

"I HAVE AN EXTERNAL HD 500 GB on a Moxi DVR (at another location via Charter cable) which does not require a transfer to the EXTERNAL HD, it fills the Moxi DVR and any MORE recordings automatically go onto the EXTERNAL HD.

Does the dishNetwork automatically store recordings onto the EXTERNAL HD? It appears to require a xfer or am I (not the first time) missing something?"

I am wondering the same thing. How can I use my PC to pull content off the external hard drive?
