Amazing! The potential applications are virtually endless. For example, with this tech you can have DL in the promo picture, then take him out if needed, using a very, very simple interface (my *father* could do it). Seam Carving does much, much more than simple resizing and aspect ratio change.
As for the promo, thanks, but my buddy had already sent me pretty much the same thing (PhotoShop as well) but with black letterboxing; IMO black works much nicer for wallpaper.

I was mildly interested and had some time to kill, so I went a'browsing and saw some of the before/after pictures, although I do not remember what the software basis was for the one (1) implementation I found.
EDIT: sorry, you said letterbox. You can use Paint to do it. Here is one I popped off.
