Onkyo TX-SR605/705 and Toshiba HD-A2 Player

Would using both of these together provide the ability to get DolbyTruHD and DTS-MA on selected disks?

Or do I need to get an A20 or XA2?

I believe it depends on if the A2 can output multi-channel PCM over HDMI to the receiver. Can it do this or do I need a higher-end Toshiba?

The A2 decodes DolbyTrueHD and outputs on PCM, but DTS Core only. Also, it will never be able to output undecoded DDTrueHD and/or DTS-MA to be decoded by the receiver. I believe only the XA2 will ever be able to do that.
Have you thought about the Samsung HD-UP5000? Should be out relatively soon and have both HD-DVD and BlueRayDisc playback with Reon upscaling of SD, and full on-board decoding of DDTrueHD & DTS-MA, AND be able to export the undecoded DDTrueHD and DTS-MA to your receiver.

I'll have to look at the Samsung, thanks.

So if I got the A2, is there any reason to go for this receiver and it's DTS-MA and DolbyTrueHD abilities over just another (maybe cheaper) receiver that still accepts audio over HDMI? Or would I have to get the XA2 or Samsung, for example, to take advantage of the advanced audio capabilities of the Onkyo?

Now that the Samsung has been delayed until December or thereafter, I'm seriously considering the A2.

I received my Onkyo 705 this week.
Is hooking up the A2 to it the best option I have for audio for HD DVD or Bluray, other than the XA2 (with the forthcoming firmware to allow bitstream)?

For HD DVD the A35 will send advanced codec bitstream audio. Soon, with a promised FW upgrade, the XA2 will also. For Blu-ray, the Sammy 1400 is the only one that will send bitstream advanced codec material. There is a mixed bag of other players that will do the advanced codec decoding and send PCM (none will do DTS HD MA yet, that I know of), search them out, plus this fall will see a few more players with differing audio capabilities.

Thanks for that. A35 eh? Well I'm in Canada so I'm sure that's going to be $400+ easy. I can get the A2 today for $200 on sale, so I think I'm going to go for that for my current setup, and then likely see what happens over the next couple years in the format war, etc. to decide then if I need either a better HD DVD player or go Blu. (Or maybe just download HD by then
