Picked up a Panasonic BD35k blu-ray player last night for around $100 less than they are going for these days. I'm going to place the PS3 in the bedroom for gaming and movie watching. In December I pcked up a Samsung 1400 for the price of a Walmart SD DVD player. So far it's woking fine with my Sony 60XBR2.

Good choice - I'm happy with mine (except the boot time, but I guess all players have that issue due to the java).

Also, thanks for the tip on drapes from JC Penney's. After spending half a day driving around and going to all the high end shops I convinced my wife to make one last stop. Of course we found something we loved and the cost was less than half all the others. We had to wait almost eight weeks, but love the end result.

I'm still considering the "hospital" curtain trick - how is that working out for you?

Excellent. There are no kinks, derailments, etc. even though I had to use two seperate rails for the 10 ft. span. It's one of my favorite additions. It really blacks out the room when needed.

This week I swapped the JVC RS1 for the higher contrast RS2 (15K:1 vs. 30K:1 on/off). The upgrade also adds motorized zoom and focus. I'll post some thoughts on the difference later this weekend. I plan on watching Dark Knight tonight.

The RS2 turned out to be a pretty substantial improvement.

1.Better Blacks without bright corners like virtually all RS1 FPs
2.Visibly better contrast ratio in most scenes
3.Sharper image
4.More three dimensional in both low and high APL scenes
5.Smoother motion and panning (this was a surprise to me, fantastic 24P)
6.Power focus and zoom, though a bit cumbersome to access from the projectors menu.

Gamma 2.4 is incredible with dark scenes. I watched Doomsday on blu-ray last night. The light bit of haze present on every other digital I've owned is virtually eliminated. Three dimensional "pop" and sharpness is more single chip DLP like now. At 800 lamp hours, it is plenty bright on my 9 ft. wide screen in low lamp mode.

Love that "rust" wall color.

Thanks. My wife gets the credit for the choice of color on the walls. I chose the dark espresso on the entertainment center.

Rob,

Can you get the rails in black? If not painting them would be an option. I'm still thinking about adding sliding curtains to my room.

Not that I've seen. They'd be easy to prime and paint. Heres the link:

What change? Oh, you mean because I sent my projector for new firmware.

No, I meant the RS1 to RS2 "firmware upgrade".

Thanks. It's not usually tidy (kids) and it's maybe a bit too functional. Picture an 8-year-old girl doing cartwheels in front of your center channel speaker balancing on it's stand. At the same time, a 13-year-old boy tossing up his football a few feet from the projector while a scraggly little mutt dog urinates on the bottom of your curtains . Now my 6-month-old is trying to figure out how to get his walker into the room.

Thanks for the link Rob.

Kids doing cartwheels in the HT room..... My 13 year old does the same thing. Are they happy about the room?...... Nah

I'm not sure yet. I've been a bit hesitant to sell the Klipsch but I may be trying out some Atlantic Technology speakers. Or maybe Bose They need to be less visible than most of the speakers I like (no towers).

I have some B&W M1's and they don't have much of a foot print, and sound remarkably good.... might be a good alternative for you. It was the only way I could get the wife to allow me to have surround sound in the family room (no sub though)

I ended up not keeping the RS2 after all. It's a great projector and an improvement over the RS1. The RS10 seems like an improvement over the RS2 and is actually equal to what I paid for the RS2 if you factor in the cost of a replacement lamp. The RS10 is said to be a bit sharper, same CR, and the ability to use higher light output with the variable iris. I was thinking of waiting for an RS20 but I doubt I will prefer the more natural subdued colors of it's THX mode.

Were are you selling them?

Have you tried the Atlantic Techs yet?

I might go for the RS20?

Check this out great reviews for both projectors

I definitely think the RS20 is the best bang for the buck projector around. On the other hand, I don't want to spend $6k on it . At approximately $3800, the RS10 seems like a better deal. Street price on the RS1 is around $2300 right now. That is a steal! I'll probably wait until used RS10s pop up in the $3k range before I bite.

Heh..this was precisely the argument my wife used to talk me out of a dedicated home theater in our basement

I turned that potential space into a gym (turned out to be a good decision healthwise), and used another part of the basement to build a media room (currently being populated with gear), so I'm very much enjoying this thread.

Thanks for the inspiration, RobZ!

Good to hear. If I had an additional space, I'd also build a gym. I have a full gym in my rehab center plus I live only five miles away so it's not too bad. I'd love to have enough space for a power cage, universal machine, all my dumbbells, and a leg press. Oh, and a treadmill and bike (almost forgot about the cardio). I love weight training. It's another hobby of mine. I injured my back and right shoulder about six months ago so my condition has gone to s--t (excuses). I'm recovered "enough" now to train a bit harder as long as I don't squat or deadlift. It sucks seeing strength diminish so quickly.

Hey, RobZ:

You sound like my kind of guy--I have a power cage, trap bar for squats, powerblocks, Roman chair, and treadmill. Will need to add a stationary bike for crosstraining. I ended up wiring for a flat screen just for the gym--so after the main media room gets done, that's my next AV target (you can't see the home theater from the gym).

Sorry to hear about your injury--hope you get to 100% soon.

I love the trap bar. I'm able to use it for trap bar squats now that I can't do BB squats. Another favorite is the t-bar row attachment, and without a doubt these Schiek straps. I like the heavy, lower rep, power style training (heavy, few sets). I can't take training high reps, high sets, and anything more than 50 minutes or so. Damn, now I wish I had the space for an in-home gym.

Just finnished my theater/bar a few months ago and thought I'd share some pics.

Looks good. Have you considered draping the screenwall with velvet curtains and adding acoutic panels on your side walls< My last HT was initially a similar color to yours and when I added black velvet curtains (and DIY masking) it really added to the image or at least the perceived contrast. I was also able to line the wall with acoustic foam under the fabric (very inexpensive too). It helped tame some of the reflections in the room.

What speakers are those boohshelves?

Here's a pic of the screenwall with the masking in place.

Here's a shot of the DIY panels(I later changed to Ralph Lauren Suede paint). ATS acoustics has great prices on their panels though. I don't thimk I'd make my own again.
