I am piecing together my HT set-up with some new and some old parts. I have an HK AVR 745 receiver to power things, a custom 15" Sub-woofer, and am going to use Infinity Beta 50s in the front. I already have one Beta 50 cherry cabinet, but the other front was damaged in shipping, so I am going to make a custom center channel out of the drivers and purchase another Beta 50 cherry cabinet. Harman direct is out of stock on the Ebay refurbs, so I am going to have to pay considerably more for my other front cabinet which leaves no cash to purchase the Beta10s I planned on using for my surrounds.
Currently I am running a set of old JVC 3-ways with a 12" woofer, 5" mid, and 1" tweet, but they are in large cabinets and not exactly practical for surround usage given my limited space. I have a number of old speakers collecting dust out in the garage and thought about using some of them to perhaps build custom surrounds at the same time I build my Custom Beta 50 center channel. What I need is advice on which to use...
What I have to select from:
I have a pair of old Infinity ES-103s with the poly-cell mids and tweets. The woofers and passive radiators both have missing surrounds and the bottoms of the cabinets are warped with water damage. The mids and tweets still work fine despite a slight tear in one of the mid cones. I am unsure what the crossover points are with the polycell drivers, but I am not thinking the Poly-mid would drop low enough to run in a simple 2-way system, so I am tempted to mate it with a 6" midbass driver and perhaps run as a 3-way system using the stock ES-103 crossovers and connecting the 6 in the space of the Infinity 10". Anyone know the crossover points on the stock ES-103 crossovers?
I have a set of Canton 6.5" mids and titanium dome tweets from a car audio component set I used to run in my car. These are 4ohm drivers and I am leaning towards putting these in my truck instead of house, but it has just been to hot to actually install them. If they are my best option for my surrounds, I will hold off on truck speakers and get something around Christmas. I would build a smallish sealed cabinet of maybe .5 ft3 and use the Canton crossovers.
I have a Cadence aluminum 5.25", 4", and tweet combo that I used to run in a 3-way configuration in my old Thunderbird. These are also all 4ohm. I would likely only run the 5 and tweet in the HT cabinet and again run a .5ish ft3 sealed cabinet. The Infinity Beta 50s have a Ceramic Metal Matrix cone design, so I am wondering if these Cadence Aluminum cones are the closest to matching timber wise.
A friend offered me his old MA Audio 6.5" mid-bass drivers that he replaced with Dynaudio. These are pretty massive drivers and I would likely have to build a slightly larger cabinet to house these so the magnets would fit!
I also have an assortment of Blaupunkt Mobile coaxes ranging from 5.25" to 6" to 6"X6" that I picked up on a clearance sale. These are the "cheapest" option I have, but thought I would toss these on here in case for some reason I am overlooking something about them.
I would have to check, but I think I also have an MB Quart 5" set, 4" set, and I am pretty sure I have some MB Quart 3-way crossovers competition cross-overs with 300hz and 3khz crossover frequencies at 12db/octave.
What I need to know is which would be my best combination of the above to use for surrounds. The speakers will be mounted even with my couch firing in from the sides. I do not think my HK AVR-745 will have a problem running a 4ohm load, especially if they are not running bass.
I am leaning towards using the Cadence 5" mids and Infinity poly-cell tweets from the ES-103, but I wanted to ask here before I start cutting wood. Thoughts?? Comments?? Opinions??
