When is the switch to Mpeg4?
Is this going to eliminate UTV's?
Or is it just for HD.

I read by Jan 2008 Dave should have gobs of HD.

Has this already been discussed? Because I'm not goin to use the search function.....I've been here too long and I'm far too lazy!

I think klassic is trying to get me going in this thread about using the search function as I did in the 3.8 upgrade thread
If you are I don't think I want to participate
My simple minded understanding of the mpeg4 is it's for the HD side. I still have 4 UTV's and 3 HD TiVo's, and some talk is about if/when D* is going to shut down the mpeg2 HD stream for the HD TiVo. I do not recall any talk about the SD stream, of course I am just perusing the HD forums. Shutting down the mpeg2 HD stream would not affect the UTV, if it ever comes that the mpeg SD stream is shut down I will miss my UTV, Rock solid and easy to use.

Hmmm.. no bites

I was assuming it was for the HD side.
It seems sending out 3.8 would have been a waste of time if the UTV's were defunked by 2008.

I was thinking of getting my UTV hooked up again, but didn't want to go through the effort (you need to see my rack of compents to understand)
if UTV's wont' be working in 3 months.

MPEG4 offers greater compression than the current MPEG2 programming. DTV has both MPEG2 and MPEG4 HD programming, but all new HD programming with be MPEG4 encoded.

The new D10 satellite went live yesterday and is primarily a MPEG4 HD satellite (they added 21 channels yesterday). The soon to be launced D11 satellite will follow suit.

The existing MPEG2 HD programming will be transitioned to MPEG4 over the next year or so.

DTV promisies to have 100 HD channels (mostly MPEG4 encoded) by the end of the year.

The UTV unit is not capable of decoding HD or MPEG4 programming.

Hope this helps.
