Who else is annoyed by commercial edits on TV series on discs?

I picked up Heroes HD DVD set and will probably also pickup Lost S3 and ST:TOS on high-def. However you would think with all that money that they are spending on bringing these shows to disc (both HD and SD) that they could edit the commercial points a little better. Why do I have to deal with abrupt scene changes followed by short repeat of that prior scene on these discs? It's not so annoying when watching these on TV because those breaks are interrupted by commercials, but on discs, they are extremely annoying. It seems that since the studios have to edit the show to put them on discs, they could edit these short repeats out, so that the end product is little more seamless. Anyone else frustrated by these annoyances???

Yes, the repeated segments are annoying, though I don't mind the quick fade to blacks for cut points.

They do make me laugh sometimes, but it doesn't bother me.

I guess they want people to have the original unedited content.

I suggest you hit pause when this happens and make up your own commercials!

Way of the world. Purists would want them to be included as they were part of the broadcast.

When TV box sets first came out a bit of research was done on this.

consumers overwhelmingly wanted the entire unedited broadcast.

Plus it takes time and money to edit them out.

you will probably have to live with it because its probably not gonna change.

Its weird becase older shows didn't have what just happened when you come back. This seems to be somthing newer shows are doing. Do they think watcher need a reminder of what just happend a few minnites ago.

I'm so anal about experiencing the original broadcast, I pause for 2 minutes at every fade to black.**







**Of course I switch the TV over to the baseball game when I do this (you didn't think I'd actually watch a commercial, did you???).

Yeah, and when you switch the HDMI input it goes back to the beginning so you can enjoy the same segment over and over again!

Seems like this would be a good opportunity for seamless branching. That way either side can get what they want.

It seems like heros does it because they try and take the action right up to the somethings going to happen any second now point but want to back up a little so that you get the context of what is happening when you come back from the commercial break.

I can give another input, when I was very young commercials wernt allowed in the ordinary channels. So every show (Dallas, Miami Vice, Magnum etc) that was made for commercial brake ended up with just the black fade. When you are young you never understod why you just saw it like an typical TV story telling thing.

And try to remove the black fade would actually destroy the pacing of the movie. It is meant for you to pause.

You'd think they could do some kind of branching, so that people could choose either option before the start:
1. remove black fades and flashbacks
2. remove flashbacks
3. original tv broadcast (minus the actual commercials)

I thought the black fade was *too short* on the Heroes set. I thought it should have paused for a couple more seconds for dramatic effect. And no, they should not re-edit the show. I paid for the entire series, I want everything that was originally aired.

Or at least after a quick fade to black switch to a Heros screen for a few seconds and then go back.

I agree, no re-editing.

Studios don't have to 'edit' anything to put them on the disc. That is the way the show was edited to begin with. Why would they bother to re-edit something that is already edited?

Most TV shows when they are first shot often come in over time. That is they run longer than the timeslot would allow, so the episodes are cut to the timeslot length somewhere in the process before the final version is sent for air. What I would like to see, and I realize that it is not likely to happen, is for those cuts to be restored. There are no timeslot concerns on discs. The only real problem is those cuts usually take place before post-production and even if the material existed it might be costly to do. I still hope for it though.

I read about this issue elsewhere a week or so ago. Does anyone know what causes it? I have my HD-D2 going over HDMI to my Onkyo 604 and from there to my Samsung HL-S5687 and I've never had any problems pausing my movie and switching to another input on the TV or receiver. But I know someone else who can't do it without restarting his disc. What's up with that?

I use the 30 second skip forward and the 15 second rew to skip commercials. We would need these on the HD DVD player. Perhaps they can be added with a firmware update.

Picked up a set of discs from the old DALLAS series. Each episode (minus commercials) is about 49 minutes long. If you've taken out commercials from any of today's shows, you only have about 40 minutes out of the hour. And they wonder why we're getting sick of commercials!

I must have been in a glass half full kind of mood, because as I was watching Heroes and they had the breaks where commercials would normally be, my thought was that I was thankful that I was watching this on prerecorded disc instead of from the TV broadcast. I might get hooked on not having to grab the remote or watch commercials and may not go back to watching shows like this from my DVR. I'm thinking of waiting for the discs for season 4 of Lost instead of recording it each week.

As far as the segments reminding people what happened, I agree with the comment about branching so we can choose. I think this would be a good use for seamless branching.

What I find interesting about the post-commercial "flashbacks" in Heroes is that they don't play out identically to the pre-commercial scene that they are recapping. Usually the camera angles and even the dialogue are slightly different, so it's not exactly as if you are watching the same thing repeated verbatim.

With that in mind, I think it would be a net loss if these were removed, even if that was actually practical to do. It's almost as if you are given an alternate take of a scene seamlessly branched into the flow.
