Remember: they promise you fiberoptic, but they deliver copper! GOOD LUCK!

Here in the Dallas / Ft. Worth area hundreds of miles of undergrown fiber optic was laid years (maybe over a decade) ago. It the midst of that massive fiber optic infrusture the wide range use for that technology bottomed out. By not completing such a massive and costly project the "as advertised" use, especially by AT&T was and is doomed. If your area does not already have fiber optic cabling and other necessary associated infrusture it is very doubtful it is coming any time soon.

When I had AT&T U-Verse Voice and Internet installed I also expected fiber optic technology. The AT&T techs quickly told me I had copper. They went on to say that fiber optic cabling was not available in our DFW region.

In addition to directly asking AT&T, another good way to easily and quickly determine if your area has fiber optic infrusture inquire about the availability of Version FiOS. Note that AT&T is not at fault for the lack of fiber optic cabling yet the are quilty of misrepresenting its wide range availability.

Good luck.

Hello, I am new here. I was at bestbuy yesterday and talk to the Directv Rep. He told me that they have reached agreement with Viacom and all the channels will be coming back as early as tomorrow( which is tuesday. I will wait and see but what do you guys think? Was he telling the truth or smoking baloney?

If you decided to switch to U-Verse mainly because of the Viacom blackout issue. I hope your smart enough to know that you could be in the same situation when U-Verse, Fios, your local cable companies, and Dish Network has to negotiate a new carriage deal and Viacom decides to strong arm them also.

AT&T U-Verse was on the verge of losing AMC channels before they agreed to a price increase which the subscribers will be paying for.

Just saying my 2cents.

Honestly he's just a sales person trying to make a sale and get his commission.

No official new agreement has been made yet. When it does happen they will announce it on www.directvpromise.com and all of the media outlets will be reporting it.

As for new deals I'd suggest waiting 3 more days because Directv's deals will be getting better.Starting on the 19th they will also be giving NFL Sunday Ticket Max for free and I think the 2nd year saving goes up $10 more than what's being currently being offered. NFL Sunday Ticket Max alone is worth $100 if you just have NFL Sunday Ticket basic you have to pay $100 to upgrade to NFL ST Max which let's you watch all of the games also on your IPAD, Android Tablet, Smart Phone, and PS3.It also gives you access to the NFL Red Zone channel, game mix channel, and has the fantasy football tracker.

I know the AAA deal of $10 off for 20 months will still be available. Not sure if the Costco $120 gift card deal and if Bestbuy will still be offering their deal after 7-18.

We will find out by this Thursday.

IMHO I think if you want to save money in the long run AAA deal is the best discount which is what I went with when I signed up last month. If you want money upfront I'd suggest the Costco deal for the $120 gift card.Bestbuy deal did not appeal to me because you had to spend $399 to get a $150 gift card.

U-verse has come a long way in the past 2 years with improvements to their DVR, but the bottom line is that the picture is noticibly inferior to DTV. A while back, I suspended my DTV account to give U-verse a try and was immediately disappointed. The pixilization was horrible and you could see that their HD signal was definitely more compressed that DTV. Needless to say, I switched back before my 30-day trial was up.

I've been taking the wait and see approach as well and will call on Friday to see what I can get. The NFL Sunday Ticket is of no interest to me so they're going to have to come up with something else, especially if there is no Viacom deal in place. Programming as a whole is already substandard IMO and I feel like I'm paying more than what it's worth as it is. With an HD DVR, 2 HD's, 2 SD's with all movie channels except Cinemax, it adds up quickly and I'm not seeing the value.

Looks like you were right afterall.

Even though I was able to put together a bundle on Century Link's site, after I talked to someone there they said that their internet service is not available in my area.

Oh well, those savings would have been nice. Hopefully AT&T gets their act together and gets U-verse in my area so I can go with that option.

Alot of peeps just dont care about PQ.

Thats why we unfortunately still have dvds, non OAR movies & stretched content on tv.

Some of us care but are caring less when it comes to broadcast at least in my case. Sure, I want as good a picture as I can get but if i REALLY want top notch picture and sound I just pop in a BD. So I am waiting until Friday to see what happens or doesn't happen with Viacom but I am prepared to walk away to a "lesser quality" provider for the reasons I just stated. And half of the "HD" broadcasts seem to not really be so anyway so where am I really getting the bang for my buck?

I thought I read somewhere that AT&T is no longer rolling out u-verse. Wil only be available to areas that already have it.

Some of us have just given up on the broadcast/cable/satellite sector and even downsized our "TV" displays ... HDTV is dead, It's pointless to keep throwing money at it.

I'm curious as to why you say HDTV is dead?
I can't speak for them. But as compressed as many HDTV signals are these days, real HDTV is all but dead. That's just my opinion.

Go OTA, if you can !!!! I get cable and antenna, and will record/prefer antenna at all times. On a normal 50 inch 1080p plasma, you can see a difference.

They all squabble amongst each other, sharks killing for bigger bits of the whale. They attempt to "hold us hostage", and "drum up support". It's almost like politics !!! (reality flash....it's a TV !)

There is no technical reason why we each cannot get our channels a la carte. I'd happily NOT pay for ESPN-I don't watch sports.

Assuming your OTA station isn't running 2 or 3 subchannels...

Are you suggesting that even with an OTA station with 2 or 3 sub channels, coverage of that station OTA is not better quality than on cable/satellite (with their further compression); that is, you will not see a difference on a 50 inch 1080 plasma?

I got sat a few years ago after 22 years of strictly OTA. I checked extensively over months to see if I could find a difference on a 50" plasma, and no, never. Every time I saw a problem on sat, I'd switch to antenna, and the same problem.

Best way to see evidence of how badly an affiliate can screw it up is when dtv does it's tennis/golf thing. I don't know anything about the agreements with networks, but some of the coverage will include an unmolested network feed (the Masters did this) and it's just so depressing ... There's an "international" feed listed for the British Open, be curious to see what that is.
I was OTA-only for 4 years. I sell tvs and at work we have one Dish HD box in operation feeding one set via an HDMI cable. The box is set to output 1080i from all channels. The locals from this setup look terrible, much worse than what I was getting at home OTA this was the case with several different sets. Last Thursday we had HD service from D installed. The locals look just as good as they did OTA. All of our locals have subchannels.

Dear fells,
I am debating between Nomad for my mobile devices vs sling box pro hd and app. Would you mind referring to pro and cons?
Nomad is costing me $99 while the other system is around $250 plus $30 for app.

The iOS app is $15 for a bit. And do you really need the Pro HD for me the Solo does a respectable job. My up speed is crap, DSL, so Solo works.
I do get errors from my DVR about its not HD, but I work around them.
I personally am really happy with the Nomad. Good quality video and audio, and I don't have to worry about having WiFi, or eating up my data allowance trying to watch my shows. I very rarely watch anything live though so I don't really see the need in being able to stream anything, I'm perfectly happy catching up with the shows I have already recorded and haven't had time to watch yet.

It's VERY possible & DOES happen...particularly if your DMA has (HD) networks as (SD) subchannels on the OTA signal - while the local cable system or sat companies gets a direct HD feed from the TV station. (ie: NOT as an OTA pickup)

examples include WGEM-Quincy & WHSV-Harrisonburg
