Actually those stores have more provision to haggle than you think. Although not entirely like a car salesman does, they have things in place that allow them to help customers out and make them happy, just like D* does. I was given empowerment to discount any item at any time, whatever it took to make the guest happy, and thats exactly what I did.
I would match prices from other stores, sometimes without an ad, just word of mouth if it was a reasonable difference. Again, whatever it took to make them happy. My example was from the Electronics section of the store, where the sales were more key there, but we did it all over the store too, in all areas. You should give it a try, sometimes it depends on who you get to help you but I'm sure some of these same empowerments are still in place today, in Target anyway.
So it was in fact a valid comparison, I disagree with you on that.
