That makes no sense. The replacement triggered a new commitment when it clearly wasn't supposed to. I had to call multiple times to get it removed.
Call it bashing if you like. Not like I have to explain myself to you, but I do have DirecTV (just not in my own home). In fact, they just screwed me over again by dropping a promised 24 month HD credit 18 months early. A few phone calls got it fixed. But I have to constantly watch my bill, which is my point. You can't assume they'll follow their own rules. Since posting anything negative about DirecTV is unacceptable and pathetic, then feel free to ignore me, and pay DirecTV everything they ask. You deserve each other.

As I said, the same claims were made elsewhere (by the same person) and disproven. Replacement of defective equipment DOES NOT trigger a new commitment.

It's never happened to me.

+1. I had a family member have this issue. where they got subscribe to the NFL season pass that they didnt order. it took a long time to get that fixed.

We can all sit here and read good/bad stories of every service out there, so let the record show that D*, Dish, AT&T, Cox, Comcast, Verizon, and all services had given customers a bad experience at one time or another in this lifetime.

Can we get back to talking about DirecTV and what current customers like about it?

Anyone been able to get a deal on the new "genie" DVR? Looks like new customers are getting it free! I wonder what they'll do for existing customers?

Yes just call and ask for the upgrade on 1/13/13 got it for free just an added charge of 3.00 monthly. I had to go for another 2 year commitment contract. Which I think I probably could have got out of had I mentioned swapping to Dish. (worth a try)

Yeah i thought of calling. I currently only have one Tv so I'm not sure ill benefit that much, but the 5 tuners is what I want (i got a lot of stuff recording?
Also what about installation charges? Did they have to change you previous setup to work with the genie?
Is there a way to keep my current recordings on my DVR now or transfer them to the genie?

Actually we only have our living room TV on a DVR. (we also wanted the 5 tuner status) Now they shipped Genie receiver to us and it was a simple swap from our 24-DVR to the Genie. The problem I had was activating the Genie. I tried to do it online and could not get it done so I called DirecTV up and they walked me through it in 10 minutes. They told me they had some online glitches on their online end. Now there is no way I know of that will save your present recordings. Just watch them before you swap it out that's what we did.

Sounds good. We have a ton of movies and shows that our kids watch all the time so it would be tough to get rid of those. I guess we could re-record them

Keep the original DVR in the Kid's TV room and deduct $6 per month from their allowances (or college fund )!

Good thought. I just called and the best they could do was give me $50 off the genie for a total of $249. I said no thanks. My 2 yr contract is up in June and I wouldn't have any issue with renewing now for the genie. I'm not leaving DTV in any case. Is there something specific i should mention in order to get it free?

Wait til your contract is up and then tell them you want to go to dish or cable. I did and they have me an HR34 w/installation for free

The other 5 new HD channels are supposed to be up tomorrow.

I can remember the days when I was glad to have a TV... any TV.

H2 will be welcome since they turned the original History Channel into the goober network.


And I've been dying to see HLN's Robin Meade in HD!

I had IFC HD with Time Warner and maybe it was just Time Warner but the HD was not so HD as it was just 16x9 format. It might be ok with newer shows like Portlandia but everything I watched was bad. Let's cross our fingers it was just Time Warner.

I saw her on some Jimmy Kimmel clip the other day and had to find out who she was. She is incredible.

I have had D* for more than 5 years. I didn't have to threaten to quit or anything. I just asked to speak to retention to see if I could get a better deal on the HR34 first they suggested around $100 then I asked if they could do better eventually got it for $0 including install. I was surprised it was that easy and didn't have to go all dramatic.

Far from my experience. No rhyme or reason to their decisions.

...well, this is coming from a guy that goes by the handle of "HardBallPete"...

In my case, I seldom ever ask for anything. My last experience was when I upgraded to HD several years back and wantred to get an HD DVR. At the time, Comcast was running a pretty slick deal, so I wasn't willing to pay the upfront cost of a DVR I wasn't going to own. The result was no up front fee for the DVR and a free installtion of the new dish and DVR. I did have to go to retention since the normal CSR wouldn't budge, but that sounds about normal.

Before that, back in the round dish days, the place I was working was able to wrangle a deal for their employees to get free equipment and installation with no contract (this was back when the contract was only a year). You only had to pay the shipping on the equipment which was sent to you for the installer to set up after it arrived.

So, I think it matters a) how much you call them b) how long you've been with them and c) how much ammunition you have to take a deal somewhere else. On the last point, if you live in an area where your options are limited, you may not get a deal even if you've been with them a while and don't normally ask for stuff. In my case, I have 3 other options plus OTA, I seldom ask for any deals and I've been with them so long, my grandfathered package hasn't been offer for at least a decade.

PS-I've been with them longer than you, and I am out of contract. Everyone here knows their equipment upgrade practices are all over the place. It's easier to buy a used car from a blind man.

The equipment upgrade processes and practices are clear and simple.

Clear and simple on their face. Reality is that all of their fees and processes are negotiable and it just depends on how much they value you as a customer and a host of other factors we have no idea about.

No different than every other service provider in the country.

I guess my mistake was assuming your issue with getting discounts is about you trying to play hardball. Perhaps it's more due to your hard head.

The fact is, all their fees and policies are all spelled out on their web site. What is not spelled out are discounts, which can vary depending upon your customer history or how much they like you. I suspect they just don't like you.

Further, I'm not your son....and I'm 40, so I'm a bit old for many here to be calling me that.
