if you sign up for NFL Sunday Ticket you would. Otherwise your only choices are what your local CBS & Fox stations decide to show. If you want an idea to see what NFL games will be shown on your local stations, I would highly recommend visiting http://506sports.com. They're really good at listing what games will be on in your area.

After being on local cable for the last 10 years, I am considering switching to DirecTV.

One question I have is - back in the day on DTV, they offered the national broadcast channels in both east coast,
and west coast. Now that local broadcast channels are available on DirecTV, is the option of viewing the national
broadcast channel feeds (ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox) still available, both east coast and west coast?

Also, ANY advice on what to get or look out for as far as getting the best deals available for DirecTV, would be appreciated.

Thanks

NOT if they offer local channels (SD &/or HD) in your market

Just a quick reminder about conventions used around here for clarity's sake.

OTA = Over the air (broadcast) television
DTV = Digital television (usually regarded in an over-the-air sense)
E* = Dish Network (originally Echostar, hence the abbreviation)
D* = DirecTV (copying on the Echostar convention)

So, if you mean DirecTV, use either the full name or D*

Again, it's just for clarity using conventions that were in place long before I got here.

And not if a local broadcaster claims your area, whether D* offers your locals or not. You'd need a waiver.

IOW, unless you seriously live in the boonies, probably not.

True

Or you have an RV exemption; however, D* requires RV receiver(s) to be on a separate account.
So unless you only have 1-2 receivers in your house & you would be taking them with you in the the RV, not exactly economical to be paying for 2 D* accounts... wink.gif

And you need to provide a copy of the registration. So you'd actually NEED an RV. Or a friend with wicked forgery skills. wink.gif

Well I assure you that there ARE some RV's out there - that people ARE using (solely) for "distant net" purposes - that you wouldn't be allowed to board a dog in! (think moveable urban blight...)
So getting an RV is not necessarily that expensive or that much trouble to obtain. But as long as it has a license tied to it & fulfills the "letter of the law", oh well... biggrin.gif

I just signed up for D* a month ago after being a lifelong cable user (since the 70's). Got a package that suited my needs (whole house dvr and 4 additional receivers) that they advertise on their web site. However, I signed up at Costco and received a $200 gift card as well. Quite pleased thus far with the equipment and its functionality. Video quality is good and at times surpasses what my cable company provided. Love the NFL Sunday tickets that came gratis. The free movie channels for 3 months are not impressing me. Lots of old movies, very few new releases. Pricing for the next 2 years will beat my cable company. After that the pricing is comparable.

What about Internet?

My Samsung 46" LCD TV freezes up repeatedly when a certain local inserted commercial appears. Only happens when I'm watching Ch 206, ESPN. What causes this? I'm guessing some kind of HDMI issue?

Define "freezes up".

The screen locks up showing the company logo(a mattress seller) with no sound. It stays that way until I change channels.

Wow, so this is repeatable every time this commercial comes on without exception? Happens with no other content?
Dumb question, but have you tried rewinding and then fast forwarding, give it about 10 seconds or more after it freezes, before you try it. I used to have a weird problem where my screen would just go black, no audio or video. I figured out I could rewind a little bit and then start fast forwarding and it would come back. I had techs out, and they had never seen anything like it, the problem eventually went away, but I never did figure it out and most of my issues happened on my local FOX station. It may not be a fix, but if it prevents you from changing channels and back at least you won't lose your buffer.

Can't say for sure it's "every time", but that is the only commercial that causes the lock up to happen.

Looks like an issue with your DVR, not the TV. I doubt it has anything to do with HDMI.

One reason I'll never leave D* is that I have the waivers in place. I love watching prime time starting at 5pm.

So D* managed to screw me out of more money again. I recently used their movers package which included the new customer offers (ST, movie channels for 3 months, etc). Got my first bill and noticed I was paying around $45.00 for the movie channels. I called to ask why and they said I started the movie channels after the beginning of the billing cycle and D* only gives those channels free for full months. Since I had service started on Sep. 4th and not Sep. 1st, I was charged for the movie channels from Sep 4 - Sep 30. My first free month is this month.

What a load of crap. If I had known I wasn't getting the channels for free - like I was told I would - I would not have gotten them. D* always finds new ways to screw people out of money.

I think that your D* Customer Rep was blowing smoke. I've had one or more of the premium channels for free half a dozen times since I've been a D* customer. In that time, I have NEVER started at the beginning of the month. Call the idiots back and ask for a supervisor. When you start or end a free service has not had any impact in the past.

I have to agree with that statement, I'm not planning on dropping them, but they do seem to always manage to make errors that cost the customer money. Funny how it is always your responsibility to complain that you got shafted, and then you have to escalate the problem on up the chain, etc... etc ... I don't really understand the seeming logic of you have to call them, yet when you call them whomever you talk to isn't held accountable for much if anything they tell you. How does that work?

Does anyone here use Native = Yes? If so, do you need to turn off your Genie each time you change channels? With my DVR box from a year ago I didn't have this problem, but with the Genie I do.

Also, anyone here have any problems with 3D? When I change the channel to 106 (3D Net I think), sometimes it works great and other times it says that my TV doesn't support 3D. Again, my DVR from a year ago didn't have this problem.

I use native=yes on both my HR20 and my HR44. I do not have to toggle it to change channels. My screen sometimes blanks out for a second but not all the time and not bad when it does. My assumption was that it was due to HDMI renegotiation.

I've had problems with the Genie when changing the channels using the up and down buttons. Every now and then it locks up on me. Most of the time when I watching Sunday ticket/using picture in picture. That has happened quite often. It also happened when I was watching ESPN and I pushed the scoreguide and it wouldn't change. The tech support woman told me to try using the up and down buttons on the receiver and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. She also said they haven't had any cases with this problem. I've had to reset the receiver a lot and I've only had the Genie since September. Extremely frustrating. There has to be a better way.

My wife and I are moving from NYC to the Lehigh Valley area of Pennsylvania. We currently have Verizon FiOS and love it, but unfortunately it's not available, nor will it ever be where we're moving. Our choices are DirecTV and RCN. My question is this. Is it at all possible with DirecTV to get out of market local channels? We really would much rather get the NYC locals than the Philly locals since we're actually closer to NYC and will be commuting back there for work. DirecTV has given me conflicting information on this where some reps say it is possible, others say it's illegal, and others say it's up to the installer. I had one authorized reseller tell me that it is possible if I use a NYC billing zip code. I just don't want to commit to a 24 month contract and find out I can't have these channels. Can anybody give me an answer to this seemingly difficult question? Thanks in advance!!
It's not up to the installer. Unless you're way out in the boonies you can't do it.

Anyone with any ideas to help with this issue please.
