Any news on when the next HD channel rollout is coming? Nothing for a month, and just wondering if there is anything in the "grapevine" in regards to what and when?
ABC Family, ESPNews and Disney by April 1st.

Looks like Directv 11 will launch this March...and I suspect we will have more capacity by June...related story on satellite delivery...

I'm pretty sure HBO hasn't brought them online yet. I'm sure somebody will correct me if I'm wrong.

You are correct. And they were actually supposed to launch in 2008, not Fall 2007.

I have DNS from either Baltimore or Washington DC. Are either one of those HD?

We're getting CW in HD via D* here in the Raleigh/Durham area also.

D* doesn't have CW in HD in Nashville, but it was in HD through Comcast. You also get it OTA. That would seem to me that it isn't because of the local that we aren't getting it.

Comcast had to negotiate some sort of carriage agreement before carrying the station, DirecTV may be in the process of doing the same, or, it could be a short term capacity issue, a juggling of transponder assignments as it were.

Since my locals are now available in HD through DTV, I called them to see if they would give me a free HD DVR receiver. They would not. I know some of you had success on getting a free one, I did not. It wasn't for lack of effort. I guess I'll have to stick with Commie-cast until they can offer me a free receiver.

It might be a long wait then since for new customers I don't recall ever seeing D* give away a free HD DVR, the best price I've seen now is $99 after a $100 rebate. If you have a friend with D* have them send you a referral that will get you $50 rebate and they get one also, so that would make it $50 for a HD DVR. Have you also looked at what the month charges Comcast hits you with for a HD DVR, the change in your monthly bill might help make up the rest of the costs.

Doesn't LA also have PBS in HD? And why doesn't New York have either? I've told my daughter she shouldn't watch The Gossip Girl until it's available in HD.

LA no PBS-HD on D* just yet, I just checked for you. We have two main OTA channels KCET 28 and KOCE 50 serving LA and Orange Counties. Neither in HD on D* but we hope soon!

I have been thinking about switching to Direct TV, but one thing really bugs me. Right now I pay $13 a month to rent the Motorola HD DVR box from Insight, I paid nothing to get it, and if I cancel they get it back. If I switch to Direct TV I have to pay $200 for a HD DVR, and pay $5 a month, and they expect me to give it back to them if I cancel? That does not make sense to me. I would have to have Direct TV for over 2 years in order to make up the $200 cost by saving $8 a month on rental fees.

I have also heard that if the box quits working, or if they come out with a new model, they will not replace it, you have to spend another $200 to get a new one. With my cable box if it screws up or a new model comes out I can stop by the office and swap them out no problem.

These are some of the biggest things holding me back from switching (along with the fact that I find it annoying to have to hook up a box to every tv). Am I correct in this being their policy? I wouldn't mind paying for a unit up front if it was mine and I didn't have to pay monthly rent, but doing both is not right. I am looking to get 2 HD DVRs and one standard reciever, along with every channel they offer (excluding non-english language), but there is no way I can see paying $400 up front on top of $120 a month just so I can get a few more Hi Def channels (we are supposed to get more on cable this summer).

1) You may be able to negotiate a cheaper price.
2) You don't have to pay again if the box craps out or they render your current one useless. However, as long as the box is working and compatable with the system, they probably won't change it out. That's why they have external ports and software that can be upgraded - so you don't have to get a new box if new stuff comes along.
3) You'll be getting waaaay more than a few more HD channels.

1. I'm thinking about calling and seeing what kind of deal I can get. But I'm not getting my hopes up too much. I'm also probably going to sign up for NFL Sunday ticket next year, so I was hoping that might help convince them to give me a better deal.

2. That is good to hear. I wasn't so worried about newer models as I was if the box quits working.

3. It is a lot more, but not all that many more that I will actually watch. FX, SciFi, Discovery, ESPN and NFL stuff will be great but I will lose my HiDef locals. My TV doesn't have an internal ATSC tuner, and the way I understand it the HR20s are all pretty much gone. I think I have read on here about "moving" to a friends address so you can get their local channels in Hi Def. Does that still work? I've got a few friends in Chicago that I'm sure wouldn't mind gettig my bills sent to them. I don't watch the news much so I don't care about it, I just don't want to miss out on Sports and prime time shows that are on local channels.

4. One last question, I don't have a home phone line. That isn't a problem with the new recievers is it? I don't care about pay per view.

The phone line has never been required for anything other than PPV and special package authorizations. There are ethernet jacks on the back so you can hook into your broadband connection. Eventually ethernet connection will give you access to On Demand content and the ability to view photos and videos on your networked computers. You'll also be able to remotely schedule recordings on the DVR.

And with the newer software IP callback is enabled so PPV's purchased via the remote are communicated back to the D* computer via the ethernet/internet connection so phone line won't be need for that either.

Anyone else noticing audio issues with Discovery Channel HD? For the first time that I've seen since it being added, the audio is in sync with the video (No bad Godzilla lip-sync issues)... However, there seem to be lots of skips, buzzy syllables, and well... not sure what other way to describe it.
Perhaps either the network or D* is working on the syncing on the HD side, but the audio is taking the hit. I have to wonder if it isn't D* with the issue though... Watching the NHL All-Star game on VS this weekend, I also noticed big time sync issues with the video/audio. I've never had this issue watching HD Net.
Anyone have thoughts?

Actually, all of that is already working.
I guess some of it is considered "Beta", but it's there.

Hmm...now, I have an H20. Reading this, I was curious and looked. Mine doesn't have an Ethernet port, but does have a USB port. Wonder if that leaves open the possibility of connecting an external Hard Drive for some kind of storage, or USB connection to a router/modem.
